The flight was a scheduled East African Airways Lockheed Lodestar service that left Nairobi on the morning of 19 February 1951. Around 7:20 a.m., radio officer D. W. Merrifield reportedly drew Captain Jack Bicknell’s attention to a bright, stationary object above the cloud line near Mount Kilimanjaro. According to Bicknell’s account, the crew informed the passengers, several of whom examined the object through powerful binoculars. The object was described as:
- elongated or cigar-shaped rather than disc-shaped;

- fitted with what appeared to be a squared-off fin at one end;
- marked by dark vertical bands or slots along its length;
- apparently stationary for approximately seventeen minutes before moving away.
The crew estimated that the object was high above Mount Kilimanjaro, although such altitude estimates were necessarily speculative because they depended entirely on assumptions about the object’s distance and size. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect concerns the alleged photographic evidence.
Contemporary accounts indicate that several people attempted to photograph or film the object:
- Captain Bicknell reportedly took still photographs.
- Passenger Overstreet allegedly exposed roughly thirty feet of colour cine film through a telephoto lens.
- Another passenger reportedly attempted additional photographs.
The surviving accounts agree on one crucial point: none of this material ultimately provided convincing evidence. One set of still photographs reportedly produced only a small indistinct image, another photographer obtained no useful result, and the motion-picture film disappeared from the historical record. The archival record extends beyond newspaper reporting. A United States Foreign Service dispatch from the American Consulate in Dar es Salaam summarised the event only days after it occurred, demonstrating that diplomats regarded it as sufficiently noteworthy to report officially. The survival of diplomatic correspondence gives the incident greater historical credibility than many folklore-style UFO stories. However, the official documents simply record what witnesses claimed; they do not identify the object.
Why the missing images matter so much
The absence of the original photographs is the single greatest obstacle to evaluating the case today.
Modern investigations of historical sightings often depend on re-examining negatives, measuring image geometry or comparing multiple exposures. None of those techniques can be applied here because the available evidence consists almost entirely of written descriptions.
This has several consequences:
- witness descriptions cannot be independently verified;
- reported dimensions such as “200 feet long” cannot be tested;
- estimates of altitude and speed remain speculative;
- later retellings sometimes exaggerate details that cannot be checked against the missing originals.
As a result, historians generally distinguish between the well-documented fact that an unusual aerial object was reported and the much weaker claim that the object possessed the extraordinary characteristics attributed to it.
Conventional explanations and unresolved gaps
Over the decades, researchers have proposed several conventional explanations.
A weather balloon was considered almost immediately. A distant conventional aircraft is another possibility. The crew reportedly ruled this out because they believed the object was far too large and remained stationary relative to the mountain. Yet without knowing the true distance, apparent size cannot be reliably estimated, making this objection less decisive than it first appears.
Some later UFO writers have argued that the combination of multiple witnesses, aviation professionals and alleged photographs leaves no satisfactory conventional explanation.
