Why local testimony remains uneven

The surviving evidence reflects several layers of selection.

The first was literacy and administration. Communities connected to mission schools or government stations were far more likely to generate written records than equally remote communities without those institutions.

The second was translation. Many witnesses spoke local languages, while official reports were normally written in English by missionaries or administrators. Translation inevitably required interpretation, including choices about vocabulary, emphasis and cultural explanation.

The third was institutional interest. Officials generally preserved material that appeared relevant to administrative or defence concerns. Routine conversations, local interpretations and community discussions were much less likely to enter permanent government files.
