Why Did UFO Alerts Stop Gaziantep Flights?

Introduction
Gaziantep Airport has become one of Turkey’s most discussed aviation-related UFO locations not because of evidence for extraterrestrial craft, but because two separate incidents—in 2023 and again in 2025—demonstrated how seriously aviation authorities treat unidentified objects near active flight paths. In both cases, pilots reported luminous or unidentified aerial objects, airport operations were temporarily halted as a precaution, and flights resumed only after safety assessments. The events are best understood as examples of aviation risk management rather than evidence of alien technology. They also illustrate an important distinction within Turkey’s broader UFO history: an object can remain unidentified at the time of an incident while still having a likely conventional explanation.
The 2023 airport shutdown
The larger of the two incidents occurred shortly after midnight on 20 May 2023.
According to Turkish media reports, the cockpit crews of two passenger aircraft independently reported an unidentified object at approximately 9,000 feet while approaching Gaziantep. The reports were passed to the air traffic control tower, and local reporting stated that controllers also confirmed an unusual contact or observation requiring investigation. As a result, airport operations were suspended on safety grounds.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trİstanbul HaberleriMay 20, 2023…
The operational consequences were significant:
- Flight operations were suspended for roughly 12 hours.
- Twenty-six scheduled flights (13 arrivals and 13 departures) were cancelled.
- Aircraft bound for Gaziantep were diverted to nearby airports including Adana and Şanlıurfa.
- Hundreds of passengers experienced lengthy delays while authorities assessed the situation.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trİstanbul HaberleriMay 20, 2023…
Flights gradually resumed around midday after officials determined that no continuing hazard existed. Turkish Airlines and AnadoluJet services departed later than scheduled once operations restarted.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trDHA | Demirören Haber AjansıGaziantep Havalimanı'nda uçuşlar normale döndüSon Dakika Gündem Haberleri…
One point that attracted attention was reporting that a formal Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM)—the international warning system used to notify pilots of hazards—was reportedly not issued, despite the airport’s operational shutdown. Contemporary reporting instead described the suspension as being managed directly through air traffic control procedures while investigations continued.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trİstanbul HaberleriMay 20, 2023…
The shorter 2025 luminous-object alert
A second, shorter disruption occurred on 17–18 February 2025.
Around 10 p.m., pilots reported a bright unidentified object at an estimated altitude of roughly 8,000–10,000 feet. The object reportedly did not appear on airport radar, but multiple pilot reports prompted air traffic control to suspend departures and arrivals while the situation was assessed.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trGündem HaberleriFebruary 18, 2025…
Unlike the 2023 disruption, this closure lasted approximately one hour before normal operations resumed after searches found no continuing threat. Local reporting consistently described the interruption as precautionary rather than a response to any confirmed extraordinary event.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trGündem Haberleri…
Although investigators did not publicly identify the object with certainty, several reports indicated that officials regarded an unauthorised drone as the most plausible explanation. The object had reportedly not appeared on radar, no hazardous activity was subsequently detected, and airport operations resumed once security checks were completed.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trGaziantep Haberleri…
Why unidentified lights stop air traffic
The Gaziantep incidents demonstrate an important principle of aviation safety.
Pilots and controllers do not need proof that an object is dangerous before taking action. An unidentified object near an airport creates uncertainty, and uncertainty itself can constitute an operational hazard.
Several factors explain why airports react conservatively:
- Collision risk. Even a small drone can severely damage an aircraft, particularly during take-off or landing.
- Limited information. Pilots often observe lights against dark backgrounds with few visual reference points, making immediate identification difficult.
- Radar limitations. Small drones, balloons or certain lighting conditions may not produce reliable radar returns despite being visible to pilots.
- Precautionary procedures. Air traffic controllers are expected to prioritise safety until an object’s nature can be clarified.
For these reasons, aviation authorities routinely treat unidentified aerial reports as operational safety issues rather than as evidence of extraordinary phenomena.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The Gaziantep cases are sometimes presented online as proof that Turkey experienced airport-wide shutdowns because of UFOs. That description is only partly accurate.
It is accurate that:
- pilots reported unidentified aerial objects;
- airport operations were temporarily suspended;[en.haberler.com]en.haberler.comunidentified object alarm at gaziantep airport 2055222unidentified object alarm at gaziantep airport 2055222
- flights were delayed, diverted or cancelled; and
- the objects were not immediately identified at the time of the reports.[Hürriyet Daily News]hurriyetdailynews.comHürriyet Daily News Unidentified object alert halts flights at airportHürriyet Daily NewsUnidentified object alert halts flights at airport - Türkiye News…
However, the evidence does not show:
- verified radar confirmation of an exotic craft in either incident;
- publicly released imagery demonstrating extraordinary flight behaviour;
- official conclusions supporting an extraterrestrial explanation; or
- physical evidence linking the sightings to non-human technology.[Hürriyet Daily News]hurriyetdailynews.comHürriyet Daily News Unidentified object alert halts flights at airportHürriyet Daily NewsUnidentified object alert halts flights at airport - Türkiye News…
The 2025 incident, in particular, moved rapidly towards a conventional working hypothesis, with local reporting indicating that investigators suspected an unauthorised drone even though the precise object was never publicly confirmed.[DHA | Demirören Haber Ajansı]dha.com.trGaziantep Haberleri…
How Gaziantep fits into Turkey’s UFO record
Within Turkey’s wider catalogue of UFO reports, Gaziantep occupies a distinctive position.
Unlike historical civilian sightings or the long-debated Kumburgaz videos, the Gaziantep events involved active commercial aviation, multiple professional witnesses and immediate operational consequences. They therefore provide valuable examples of how unidentified aerial observations are handled within real-world flight safety systems.
At the same time, they also demonstrate that an incident can remain “unidentified” in aviation terminology without implying an extraordinary origin. In both 2023 and 2025, authorities treated the reports as potential hazards requiring immediate action, but the publicly available evidence has remained consistent with conventional explanations such as drones or other unidentified aerial objects rather than supporting claims of extraterrestrial craft.[Hürriyet Daily News]hurriyetdailynews.comHürriyet Daily News Unidentified object alert halts flights at airportHürriyet Daily NewsUnidentified object alert halts flights at airport - Türkiye News…
