The Gaps in Cabo Verde's UFO Record
Cape Verde has no well-documented national UFO wave, famous military investigation or verified collection of unexplained incidents comparable with the better-known archives of some larger countries.

Introduction
That does not prove that every witness was mistaken. “Unidentified” simply means that the available information is insufficient to establish what was seen. In Cape Verde’s case, however, insufficient information is the dominant feature of the subject. The most defensible conclusion is therefore that the country has several contested sighting claims, but no confirmed anomalous craft, no substantiated extraterrestrial encounter and no strong unresolved case.
What has actually been reported?
The surviving chronology is short and heavily dependent on UFO websites and witness-uploaded material. Dates sometimes refer to when an image was published rather than when it was recorded, and several accounts omit the exact observation point, camera settings, direction of view or original files.
5 June 2011 — lights over São Vicente. A UFO-news website published footage described as showing “two linked lights” and other activity above São Vicente. The entry contains little contextual information beyond the date and island, and the material appears to have circulated without a documented investigation. February 2013 — tourist video in the Cape Verde Islands. A short YouTube upload claims that an unidentified object was filmed during a holiday in Cape Verde. The description offers no precise island, observation time, bearing, estimated distance or corroborating witness evidence. With only a compressed video and a broad location, apparent motion could arise from camera movement, a nearby bird or insect, an aircraft, a balloon or an optical artefact. 2017 publication — “metallic blue” forms in holiday photographs. A British couple reportedly noticed an object only after reviewing photographs taken near the Cape Verde coast. This is an important evidential distinction: the photographers apparently did not observe or track the object directly at the time. A retrospective Atlantic account dated to 2012. The National UFO Reporting Center carries a report submitted in October 2025 but assigned an approximate occurrence date of 15 December 2012. It describes bright circular objects seen from a boat, although the entry gives no observer count and places the event only broadly in the Atlantic, reportedly several days’ sailing from Barbados. The lack of a precise position means it cannot confidently be treated as a Cape Verde incident, even though the database labels the country as Cabo Verde. Taken together, these entries establish that Cape Verde has appeared in online UFO reporting. They do not establish a coherent national phenomenon. There is no clear sequence of related incidents, no repeated description shared by independent witnesses and no evidential bridge connecting the reported lights, photographed forms and maritime objects.
Why the map is misleading
At first glance, the reported locations suggest activity around São Vicente and the tourist-facing coast, with another possible case at sea. That distribution is more plausibly explained by how reports are produced than by any demonstrated geographical concentration.
São Vicente, particularly the Mindelo area, has a resident population, international visitors, maritime traffic and broad views of the Atlantic sky. Tourist islands and coastal resorts also generate large numbers of photographs and videos. This increases the chance that birds, aircraft, balloons, reflections and image artefacts will later be noticed and interpreted as unusual. Meanwhile, the absence of comparable reports from Santiago, Santo Antão, Fogo, Sal, Boa Vista or the smaller islands should not be treated as evidence that nothing unusual has ever been seen there. Reporting depends on internet access, language, publicity, tourist attention and whether a witness submits material to an international database. A handful of indexed webpages cannot measure an island-by-island incident rate.
The available sample is therefore too small and too biased to support claims of a Cape Verde “hotspot”. At most, it shows that São Vicente is the only island repeatedly named in easily discoverable UFO material, while other reports are attached merely to the country or surrounding ocean.
Official files and the missing investigation trail
No publicly accessible Cape Verdean government dossier, air-force investigation or declassified national UFO archive is associated with the principal claims. The country’s online reports do not appear to include statements from the civil aviation authority, airport controllers, meteorological services, police or armed forces. Nor do they cite radar plots, aviation incident logs or contemporaneous astronomical observations.
This gap matters because official documentation does not automatically solve a case, but it can preserve the basic facts needed for analysis: exact time, observer position, azimuth, elevation, weather, aircraft movements and radar returns. There is a further source problem: local Cape Verdean news coverage located during this research largely discusses incidents abroad rather than domestic cases. One article from Expresso das Ilhas, for instance, examined the 1990 Alfena incident in Portugal. It quoted an astrobiologist stressing that most reports of lights eventually receive mundane explanations and that visible lights alone do not justify an extraterrestrial interpretation. How strong is each claim?
The Cape Verde material falls into three practical evidence categories.
Confirmed observations, but not confirmed anomalies
It is reasonable to accept that photographs or videos associated with Cape Verde exist and that people interpreted something in them as unidentified. The 2011 São Vicente footage and 2013 tourist upload are real pieces of media in that limited sense. What is not confirmed is the distance, size, speed or physical nature of the depicted objects. Without those measurements, a small nearby object can appear to move like a large distant one, while camera shake, focus changes and digital compression can exaggerate apparent motion or shape.
Contested or unresolved because the data are inadequate
All the principal reports belong here. “Unresolved” should not be confused with “unexplainable”. It means that the record does not contain enough reliable information to choose among competing explanations.

The same principle applies especially strongly to Cape Verde. No report provides the combination needed to demonstrate exceptional behaviour: an original recording with metadata, a stable horizon, angular measurements, simultaneous views from separate locations, radar confirmation or a documented chain of custody.
Debunked claims
No major Cape Verde case appears to have received a published, case-specific debunking that conclusively identifies the object. It would therefore be misleading to label the 2011, 2013 or 2017 material definitively as a bird, aircraft, balloon or fabrication.
However, there is also no credible basis for presenting any of them as evidence of an extraterrestrial vehicle. Official UAP casework elsewhere regularly shows why caution is necessary: objects initially left unresolved have later been assessed as balloons or birds, while some remain unresolved only because the video contains too little information. The most plausible ordinary explanations
Cape Verde’s setting creates several common sources of unusual-looking lights and objects. The islands lie beneath open Atlantic skies, have significant aviation and maritime activity, and offer long, unobstructed horizons. Those conditions are excellent for observation but poor for judging distance.
Aircraft and landing lights can appear stationary when approaching nearly head-on, then seem to accelerate or turn abruptly as their angle changes. Multiple lights may look connected when distance obscures the aircraft’s body.
Birds and insects are particularly relevant to objects discovered in photographs rather than watched by the witness. A nearby bird can be blurred into a disc or elongated metallic-looking form, while an insect close to the lens can appear disproportionately large.
Balloons, lightweight debris and drones may drift, hover or change direction with winds that differ across altitude. Without a fixed reference or range measurement, ordinary wind-driven motion can be misread as controlled manoeuvring.
Bright planets, stars and atmospheric effects can appear to flash, change colour or move when seen through turbulent air near the horizon. Camera autofocus and digital zoom can transform a point of light into changing geometric forms.
Lens flare and internal reflections are especially plausible when an image contains the Sun or another bright source. Reflections can move in relation to the camera rather than the landscape, creating the impression of an object crossing the sky.
None of these possibilities can be selected conclusively for the published Cape Verde cases because the necessary originals and observation details are absent. They nevertheless fit the available evidence without requiring unknown technology.
What would make a Cape Verde case credible?
A strong future report would need more than a short clip or a recollection. The most useful record would preserve the exact date and local time, GPS position, direction of view, duration, weather, camera model and untouched original file. Witnesses should also describe what they saw before reviewing photographs or discussing the event with others.
Independent corroboration would substantially improve the case. Two videos from separated locations could allow triangulation, while air-traffic information might identify aircraft and astronomical software could exclude planets, satellites or meteors. Radar evidence would be valuable only when its time, location and operating limitations were documented.
Scientific proposals for studying anomalous aerial events recommend precisely this kind of multimodal observation: wide- and narrow-field cameras, triangulation, radar-derived range and velocity, radio measurements, microphones and environmental sensors. For Cape Verde, even a modest standardised reporting system linking witnesses, airport authorities, meteorologists and local astronomy observers would be more useful than expanding unverified internet lists. It could determine whether incidents cluster around particular flight paths, astronomical events or weather conditions and would preserve evidence before details are lost.
The balanced verdict
Cape Verde’s UFO record is notable mainly for its thinness. The country has several online sighting claims, especially involving São Vicente, tourists and observations over the Atlantic, but none has developed into a nationally significant case supported by official records or strong independent evidence.
The 2011 São Vicente lights are poorly documented. The 2013 tourist video lacks a precise location and observational context. The 2017 photographs were interpreted retrospectively and have no published forensic analysis.
