Could Grande Comore be a UFO hotspot?

Based on currently available evidence, the answer is no. Grande Comore (Ngazidja) is the country’s most populous island and contains Moroni, the international airport and the active Karthala volcano. These features make it the island where unusual lights are most likely to be observed simply because more people are present and more aircraft operate there—not because there is evidence of anomalous phenomena.

Airports, city lights and Karthala

Grande Comore differs from the other islands in three important ways.

First, it hosts Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport near Moroni, the country’s principal aviation gateway. Aircraft arriving, departing or holding offshore can produce lights that appear unusual to casual observers, particularly at night or when viewed across the sea.

Second, Moroni is the largest urban area in Comoros. Although city lighting remains modest by international standards, it is greater than on the smaller islands. Artificial lighting can reduce visibility of faint celestial objects while simultaneously making bright aircraft lights appear more prominent through atmospheric haze.

Third, Mount Karthala, one of the world’s largest active shield volcanoes, dominates the island. Volcanic terrain, cloud formation around the summit, volcanic gases and changing weather can all create striking visual conditions. During periods of volcanic activity or unusual cloud illumination, observers may encounter phenomena that deserve ordinary geological or meteorological explanations before extraordinary ones are considered. Anjouan and Mohéli offer darker skies—but not stronger UFO evidence

Anjouan and Mohéli present different observing conditions from Grande Comore.

Both islands have smaller populations, less urban lighting and lower levels of air traffic. In principle, darker skies can make meteors, satellites, planets and bright stars easier to observe. They may also make aircraft navigation lights appear more conspicuous against the night sky.

Mohéli, in particular, has relatively limited development outside its settlements, while much of the island remains protected natural landscape. Anjouan is more mountainous and densely settled than Mohéli but still experiences substantially less aviation activity than Grande Comore.

These characteristics might be expected to improve naked-eye visibility of natural astronomical objects. However, they do not translate into a larger documented catalogue of unexplained aerial observations. Why report counts need population and exposure data

Comparing islands solely by the number of reported sightings would be misleading.

Several factors influence whether unusual observations enter the public record:

  • Population size: Grande Comore has substantially more residents than Anjouan or Mohéli, increasing the number of potential observers.
  • Air traffic exposure: Regular commercial flights are concentrated around the international airport on Grande Comore, increasing opportunities to observe aircraft lights.
  • Reporting infrastructure: Comoros has no established public UAP reporting system or searchable national archive, so observations may never become publicly documented.
  • Media visibility: Events occurring near Moroni are more likely to receive press attention than observations in remote communities.
  • Tourism and outdoor activity: Differences in where visitors spend evenings or travel at night may affect who notices unusual lights.

The islands’ physical environments help explain why observers might experience different viewing conditions without invoking extraordinary causes.

Grande Comore’s volcanic slopes create elevated viewpoints overlooking the Indian Ocean, while coastal horizons provide long lines of sight over dark water. Under clear conditions this can make planets, satellites and distant aircraft especially noticeable.

Anjouan’s steep mountains frequently generate rapidly changing cloud cover, which can alter the appearance of bright celestial objects through thin cloud or atmospheric moisture.

Mohéli’s relatively dark environment allows fainter astronomical objects to remain visible for longer, potentially increasing the number of ordinary sky phenomena that attract attention simply because they are easier to see.

These environmental differences affect visibility, not necessarily the occurrence of unexplained events.

What can and cannot be concluded

Current evidence supports only limited conclusions about island-level patterns in Comoros.

Reasonably supported observations include:

  • Grande Comore experiences the greatest aviation exposure because it hosts the country’s main international airport.
