Panama's UFO Files: Claims, Cases and Explanations

Panama has a genuine history of UFO reporting, but not a strong body of verified UFO evidence. The surviving record is fragmented across newspaper archives, opinion columns, foreign civilian databases and personal testimony.

Introduction

The most defensible conclusion is therefore that Panama has an active UFO culture rather than a confirmed UFO mystery. Some reports remain unresolved because the original information is inadequate, not because investigators have eliminated aircraft, balloons, drones, satellites, astronomical objects and photographic artefacts. Panama’s busy airspace, maritime traffic, tropical weather and uneven historical record make careful identification particularly important.

What the Panamanian record actually contains

A UFO is simply something seen in the sky that the observer cannot identify at the time. It does not automatically mean an alien spacecraft. That distinction is essential in Panama, where many widely circulated cases survive only as short news items or retrospective accounts.

Available reports cluster into several broad periods:

  • Late twentieth-century personal narratives: Panamanian newspapers and columnists have preserved stories of unusual lights, alleged close encounters and claimed contact with extraterrestrials. These accounts are culturally significant but normally lack contemporary photographs, radar data, physical traces or independent documentation.
  • Early internet-era neighbourhood reports: Archived newspapers carried reports from places including Ciudad Bolívar, Río Abajo, Monte Oscuro and parts of Veraguas during the early 2000s. The surviving summaries describe frightened residents, lights or apparent objects, but rarely show evidence that aviation, meteorological or astronomical checks were completed.[portal.critica.com.pa]portal.critica.com.paEl supuesto avistamiento de un Objeto Volador No Identificado (OVNI) la noche del domingo los tiene…Read more…
  • Camera-phone and social-media cases: From the 2010s onwards, reports increasingly involved distant points of light, digital zoom and compressed images. Their greater visibility has not necessarily produced better evidence.

This pattern is not a reliable chronology of everything seen over Panama. It is a chronology of what newspapers, witnesses and reporting databases happened to preserve. Quiet rural incidents may have gone unrecorded, while visually striking but weak cases were more likely to attract coverage.

The cases most often cited

The 2015 Panama City object

One of the better-known modern episodes occurred on 8 July 2015, when photographs of an apparent object over Panama City and the Bay of Panama circulated through local media and social networks. A later account in La Estrella de Panamá described the event as a daytime UFO appearance that generated testimony, jokes and speculation online. The same article did not identify a conclusive official investigation or publish measurements capable of establishing the object’s size, distance or speed.[www.laestrella.com.pa]laestrella.com.pawww.laestrella.com.pa¿Hay alguien allí afuera?February 17, 2023 — 17 Feb 2023 — El 8 de julio de 2015 se agitó el asunto en Panamá con la supuesta aparición de un Ovni en el cielo de…Published: February 17, 2023

That missing geometry is decisive. A small object close to a camera can resemble a large distant craft; an out-of-focus bird, balloon, aircraft or debris can become disc-like after enlargement. Without the original files, consecutive uncropped frames, exact camera position and independent observations from separated locations, the photographs cannot establish extraordinary performance.

The case is therefore best classified as unresolved from insufficient data, rather than confirmed, disproved or evidentially strong.

The 2016 Bugaba photographs

On 6 April 2016, a resident of La Concepción in Bugaba, Chiriquí, reportedly took three mobile-phone photographs at about 5.57 pm. The witness described a blurred object with small blue points and said the sky was clear. The local report itself acknowledged that the images were indistinct.[Crítica]com.paCrítica¡Ovni a la vista!ChiriquíEl avistamiento en el cielo chiricano de un objeto volador no identificado (ovni) fue reportado por un ciudadano, quien logró alg…

Three images taken within roughly a minute offer more than a single isolated frame, but the report supplies no exposure data, focal length, compass direction, angular movement or comparison with known air traffic. Nor does it document corroboration by aviation authorities or a second photographer. Consequently, the photographs confirm only that an unclear image was captured, not what produced it.

The 2013 Bay of Panama report

A submission to the US-based National UFO Reporting Center describes an orange sphere moving above ships waiting near the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal in 2013. The observer reported continuous eastward movement and stated that three zoom photographs existed.[NUFORC]nuforc.orgNUFORC UFO Sighting 101377August 20, 2023 — At 20 hours, on the bay of Panama City observe an orange sphere that moved on the waiti…Published: August 20, 2023

This is a useful example of the limits of civilian databases. The entry records what a witness submitted, but it does not by itself authenticate the photographs, confirm the viewing geometry or show that harbour traffic, aircraft, lanterns, planets and atmospheric effects were systematically checked. Its location near an intensely active shipping and aviation corridor increases the number of ordinary candidates that must be excluded.

Claims from La Chorrera

Panamanian popular reporting has also preserved the story of Máximo Camargo, a resident of La Chorrera who claimed repeated journeys with extraterrestrial beings and described dozens of encounters. A 2021 article revisited claims attributed to him from the 1990s, including predictions about events after 2020.[Crítica]critica.com.paCrítica Chorrerano secuestrado por Ovnis vaticinó hambrunaCríticaChorrerano secuestrado por Ovnis vaticinó hambruna…April 26, 2021 — 26 Apr 2021 — Hace 24 años, Máximo Camargo, el chorrerano q…Published: April 26, 2021

Such testimony belongs in a history of Panamanian UFO belief, but it is not equivalent to evidence of an aerial incident. Repeated contact narratives require especially strong corroboration because they make detailed, testable claims. In the available coverage, there are no independently authenticated physical samples, navigation records, medical findings or instrument readings that verify the journeys.

Why reports vary by region

Panama’s reported UFO geography reflects population, observation conditions and infrastructure as much as any underlying phenomenon.

Panama City and the canal approaches produce numerous opportunities for ambiguous sightings. The area combines dense commercial aviation, helicopters, illuminated high-rise buildings, ships at anchor, port equipment, drones and humid atmospheric conditions. Lights seen over water can be particularly difficult to judge because observers lack fixed distance references.

Chiriquí, including Bugaba, David, Boquete and the highlands, offers clearer horizons and darker skies than the capital. That makes genuine astronomical observation easier, but it also makes planets, satellites, high-altitude aircraft and balloons more conspicuous. Boquete additionally hosts a private optical Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence observatory that has conducted instrument-based searches for brief laser-like signals from stars. This is scientific SETI work, not a UFO-investigation programme, and its published description does not report confirmed alien signals or local spacecraft.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.

Veraguas, Coclé, Colón and western rural districts appear intermittently in newspaper archives, often through community testimony rather than technical documentation. Fewer cameras and observers may reduce reporting, while limited access to flight-tracking or astronomical information may make identification harder.

The apparent concentration of cases around populated areas should not be treated as proof that objects prefer those regions. It is also where more people, journalists and cameras are present.

Official records are the largest gap

Panama does not appear to maintain a public UFO office comparable to the French space agency’s dedicated unidentified-aerospace-phenomena unit, nor is there an easily searchable national catalogue assigning cases to explained, unexplained and data-deficient categories. The National Archives of Panama provides access to historical collections and archival projects, but its public-facing material does not present a dedicated UFO series.[archivonacional.gob.pa]archivonacional.gob.paOpen source on gob.pa.

The Civil Aviation Authority is the more relevant institution for unusual activity in controlled airspace. It regulates remotely piloted aircraft, fixed balloons, rockets and related operations, supervises air-navigation services and publishes notices concerning authorised drone activity. These systems demonstrate that many unfamiliar objects can legally or operationally occupy Panamanian airspace without being conventional passenger aircraft.[gob.pa]sigob.aeronautica.gob.paOpen source on gob.pa.

This does not mean that aviation authorities can explain every civilian sighting. It means that any serious case assessment should begin with flight plans, air-traffic-control logs, drone notices and radar information. Public UFO discussions in Panama rarely include those checks.

Historical US records may also be relevant because the former Canal Zone contained American military installations and remained under varying degrees of US control until the treaty transition was completed. The US National Archives holds extensive Panama Canal records and separate collections relating to Project Blue Book and other American UFO investigations. However, the existence of large archives should not be mistaken for evidence that they contain a suppressed, high-quality Panamanian case. A specific claim requires a specific document.[National Archives]archives.govOpen source on archives.gov.

Claims, explanations and evidence in Panama’s UFO record

The Panamanian material becomes clearer when divided by evidential status.

Confirmed observations are cases in which people demonstrably photographed or reported something they could not identify. The 2015 Panama City photographs and the 2016 Bugaba sequence fit this limited definition. Their existence as reports is confirmed; the extraordinary nature of the objects is not.[Crítica]com.paCrítica¡Ovni a la vista!ChiriquíEl avistamiento en el cielo chiricano de un objeto volador no identificado (ovni) fue reportado por un ciudadano, quien logró alg…

Contested claims include apparent structured craft, exceptional manoeuvres, close encounters and abductions. These may be sincerely reported, but sincerity cannot determine distance, speed or origin. Most lack calibrated imagery, simultaneous radar, multiple independent viewing positions or recoverable physical evidence.

Debunked or strongly undermined claims include material whose alien interpretation collapses after ordinary production methods or terrestrial substances are identified. A viral 2025 Panama video promoted as a meteorite producing a black, tentacle-like alien organism was widely treated as staged content or a mundane material effect rather than verified biology. No scientific institution authenticated an extraterrestrial organism, and later coverage emphasised the absence of evidence for the sensational interpretation.[www.ndtv.com]ndtv.comwww.ndtv.com Panama's Viral "Venom-Like Meteorite" Video Debunkedwww.ndtv.com Panama's Viral "Venom-Like Meteorite" Video Debunked

Debunking one viral claim does not explain unrelated sightings. It does, however, show why chain of custody matters. A dramatic video is weak evidence when the object’s origin, handling, editing history and laboratory analysis are unknown.

The most plausible sources of misidentification

Panama’s sky contains many objects capable of producing sincere UFO reports.

Aircraft and approach lights can appear stationary when moving almost directly towards an observer. Humidity and thin cloud can enlarge or diffuse their lights. Near Tocumen, Albrook, Panamá Pacífico and regional airports, apparent hovering is not unusual.

Drones can stop, reverse direction and display bright LEDs. Panama regulates remotely piloted aircraft and restricts their use around strategic facilities, confirming that drones form a recognised category of airspace activity rather than a hypothetical explanation.[sigob.aeronautica.gob.pa]sigob.aeronautica.gob.paOpen source on gob.pa.

Balloons and radiosondes can look metallic in sunlight, remain apparently still and then change direction as winds vary by altitude. Aviation regulations explicitly cover free and fixed balloons, while international meteorological networks routinely use instrument-carrying balloons for upper-air observations.[gob.pa]aeronautica.gob.paAutoridad Aeronáutica Civil de Panamá### LIBRO XIAutoridad Aeronáutica Civil de Panamá### LIBRO XI

Satellites can appear suddenly, fade or travel in formation. Recently launched Starlink satellites are especially conspicuous as lines of lights, while individual spacecraft may flare dramatically when sunlight reflects from their surfaces. Peer-reviewed modelling has shown that Starlink reflections can become bright enough to generate reports by experienced pilots.[arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Extreme Flaring of Starlink SatellitesarXiv Extreme Flaring of Starlink Satellites

Planets, stars and atmospheric effects remain frequent candidates when an object is described as a fixed bright light. Camera autofocus, digital zoom, internal lens reflections and hand movement can then create apparent shape changes or motion not present in the sky.

These explanations should be tested, not imposed automatically. A genuine investigation compares them with the exact date, time, direction, weather, flight activity and original recording.

17:50

How strong evidence would look

No widely documented Panamanian case currently meets the highest evidential standard. A persuasive future incident would require more than a witness statement or enlarged mobile-phone image. It would ideally include:

  1. Original, uncompressed recordings with metadata.
  2. Simultaneous observations from well-separated locations.
  3. Measured direction and elevation over time.
  4. Air-traffic-control and weather-radar checks.
  5. Aircraft, drone, balloon and satellite comparisons.
  6. Clear documentation of any physical material from discovery to laboratory analysis.
  7. Independent review by specialists who can publish both their methods and uncertainties.

Modern scientific proposals for studying unidentified aerial phenomena emphasise exactly this kind of multimodal collection: wide- and narrow-field cameras, radar-derived range, spectrum analysis, acoustic instruments and environmental sensors. The objective is not merely to capture something unusual, but to determine whether an apparent anomaly survives checks for artefacts and ordinary objects.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.

What Really Happened in Panama's UFO Cases? illustration 3

What can responsibly be concluded

Panama has produced recurring UFO reports across the capital, canal corridor, western provinces and rural communities. The cases reveal a durable public fascination and a local history worth preserving. They also reveal a serious documentation problem: press summaries often replace original files, civilian databases reproduce unchecked testimony, and official aviation or meteorological information is seldom integrated into public discussion.

At present, the evidence supports three conclusions. People in Panama have unquestionably seen and recorded objects they could not immediately identify. Some reports remain unresolved because essential information was never collected or preserved. None of the publicly documented national cases reviewed here provides independently verifiable proof of extraterrestrial craft or technology.

The central Panamanian UFO mystery is therefore not a single extraordinary encounter. It is the gap between the number of stories and the small amount of investigation-quality data available to evaluate them.
