Among Lebanon’s reported UFO incidents, the lights associated with Broummana and the reports from Beirut and Byblos in March 2013 are notable not because they provide strong evidence of an extraordinary phenomenon, but because they have never been conclusively identified. Their unresolved status reflects a lack of reliable documentation rather than compelling proof of anomalous flight. Unlike the widely observed June 2012 spiral, which was eventually linked to a Russian missile launch, these cases remain suspended between eyewitness testimony and insufficient evidence. The available photographs, videos and written accounts are too limited to reconstruct what occurred with confidence, leaving investigators unable either to confirm an ordinary explanation or to demonstrate anything genuinely exceptional.
Which reports remain genuinely unresolved?
Lebanon’s unresolved UFO record is surprisingly small. Many stories circulating online are either anecdotal, difficult to date, or derive from later retellings rather than contemporary reporting. The cases most frequently discussed are concentrated around two episodes:
- reports of unusual lights around Broummana in Mount Lebanon;
- sightings reported around Beirut and Byblos during March 2013.
In both instances, the central problem is evidential rather than interpretive. Witnesses described unusual lights, but there is no publicly available combination of calibrated imagery, radar records, astronomical reconstruction or official investigation capable of establishing what was actually observed.
That distinguishes these reports from solved cases, where independent evidence eventually identified a missile launch, satellite train or other conventional source, and also from unsupported internet stories that cannot be traced to identifiable witnesses.

What witnesses reported
Broummana, a mountain town east of Beirut with relatively dark skies compared with the capital, appears repeatedly in Lebanese UFO discussions. Accounts generally describe bright lights or luminous objects seen hovering, moving silently, or changing direction over the surrounding hills.
The reports vary considerably in detail. Some describe multiple witnesses observing lights over several minutes, while others exist only as brief personal narratives submitted years later to civilian reporting websites. Few include precise dates, exact locations, weather conditions or observation geometry.
Because these reports were never systematically documented when they occurred, later investigators face several difficulties:
- the original witness statements are often unavailable;
- photographs or video are absent or heavily compressed;
- observation times cannot always be verified;
- independent corroboration is usually missing.
As a result, even basic questions—such as the object’s apparent altitude, speed or direction of travel—cannot be reconstructed with confidence.
Why the Broummana reports remain inconclusive
Some later publications have repeated Broummana stories alongside far more speculative claims, including alleged close encounters submitted to international civilian databases years after the supposed events. The more restrained conclusion is that Broummana has produced recurring witness claims but not a well-preserved investigative record. The March 2013 Beirut and Byblos reports
The March 2013 reports occupy a similar position in Lebanon’s UFO history. Witnesses in the Beirut and Byblos areas described unusual lights or objects visible over the coast, with some accounts suggesting silent movement or behaviour that observers considered inconsistent with conventional aircraft.
Unlike internationally documented aerial events, however, these reports never accumulated the supporting evidence needed for detailed analysis.
Publicly accessible material is limited by several factors:
- only a small number of photographs or videos circulated;
- original high-resolution files have not become publicly available;
- there is no known release of radar or air-traffic information linked to the reports;
- meteorological reconstruction remains incomplete;
- there is no published official investigative report.
Because of these gaps, later discussions frequently rely on repeated summaries rather than new evidence.
Importantly, there is also no equally strong body of evidence demonstrating that the sightings were definitely aircraft, lanterns, satellites or another known phenomenon. The result is an evidential stalemate rather than a mystery strengthened by accumulating proof.
Why “unresolved” does not mean “extraordinary”
One of the most common misunderstandings in UFO discussions is treating an unexplained report as positive evidence for an extraordinary explanation.
In the Broummana and 2013 Lebanese cases, the opposite is true.
The principal reason they remain unidentified is that investigators lack enough information to perform the kinds of analyses now considered standard for serious UAP research. NASA’s Independent Study Team reached a similar conclusion when reviewing contemporary UAP investigations, noting that isolated eyewitness reports generally cannot establish the physical nature of an aerial phenomenon without corroborating observational data. The absence of an explanation therefore reflects missing information rather than evidence for an exotic technology.
For the Lebanese cases, the missing evidence includes:
- precise observation times;
- multiple independent observation points;
- original digital image files;
- instrumental tracking data;
- documented investigative procedures.
Without these elements, neither sceptical nor extraordinary interpretations can be demonstrated with confidence.
What these cases contribute to Lebanon’s UFO record
The Broummana lights and the March 2013 Beirut–Byblos reports remain among Lebanon’s best-known unresolved sightings because they occupy a middle ground between clearly solved events and unsupported folklore.
They illustrate several recurring characteristics of the Lebanese record:
- eyewitness testimony often survives while original evidence does not;
- local reports spread through later online repetition rather than preserved contemporary archives;
- no known national investigative programme produced publicly accessible technical analyses;
- uncertainty persists because documentation is incomplete, not because anomalous performance has been conclusively demonstrated.
Taken together, these incidents show that Lebanon has produced a small number of genuinely unidentified reports, but they also demonstrate the limits of what can be inferred from fragmentary evidence. Their unresolved status is best understood as an archival and evidential problem rather than confirmation of an extraordinary aerial phenomenon.
