Introduction
Monaco has one of the smallest publicly documented UFO records in Europe. Rather than a long history of investigated incidents, the principality’s UFO literature consists of a handful of civilian reports, a small number of online videos and repeated media claims that often rely on the same limited source material. No publicly accessible Monegasque authority has released a catalogue of investigated UFO cases, and no well-documented incident comparable to famous cases elsewhere in Europe has emerged.
That makes Monaco an unusual case. The central question is not whether extraordinary events occurred, but how a very small number of poorly documented sightings came to represent the country’s entire UFO narrative. Examining the available reports shows that nearly every widely circulated Monaco case suffers from missing evidence, absent investigation records or uncertain provenance, making it difficult to distinguish genuine unexplained observations from ordinary aerial phenomena or unsupported online claims.[nuforc.org]nuforc.orgData Bank | NUFORCLatest UFO SightingsSeptember 6, 2021…
What UFO incidents were actually reported?
Unlike countries with national archives or decades of military files, Monaco’s public record is exceptionally limited. Most references ultimately trace back to civilian reporting databases or videos uploaded to social media rather than official investigations.
The publicly identifiable reports fall into three broad categories:
- A very small number of civilian witness reports recorded by private UFO databases.
- Online videos showing lights over or near Monaco without supporting technical evidence.
- Media articles repeating statistics derived from extremely small datasets.
The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), one of the largest civilian UFO reporting databases, includes Monaco in its international index but emphasises that submitted reports are witness accounts rather than verified events. Reports are reviewed, but publication does not imply confirmation that an anomalous craft was observed.[nuforc.org]nuforc.orgData Bank | NUFORCLatest UFO SightingsSeptember 6, 2021…
Because Monaco has so few reports, even small changes in database maintenance—such as removing duplicates, correcting locations or reclassifying entries—can noticeably alter national totals. This makes country-level statistics particularly unstable compared with nations that have hundreds or thousands of documented reports.
The known civilian reports
The identifiable civilian sightings share several characteristics.
Most are:
- based on a single witness or a very small number of observers;
- unsupported by radar data;
- lacking astronomical or aviation checks;
- unaccompanied by official investigative reports;
- documented only briefly before disappearing from wider discussion.
Unlike famous historical UFO cases that generated interviews, site investigations, multiple independent witnesses or extensive documentation, Monaco’s reported sightings generally remain short narrative submissions with little follow-up.
This absence of supporting evidence does not prove that witnesses were mistaken. It simply means the reports cannot be independently evaluated to the standard normally expected for historical UFO research.
The 2013 and 2020 video claims
The alleged 2013 material
Several websites and social media discussions refer to a Monaco UFO video dating from around 2013. However, tracing these references reveals a significant problem: the original recording, recording conditions and chain of custody are generally unavailable.
Most later discussions recycle still frames, secondary uploads or brief descriptions without identifying:
- the original camera;
- the filming location with precision;
- exact date and time;
- additional witnesses;
- any independent technical analysis.
Without those basic details, the footage cannot be meaningfully assessed. There is no publicly available investigation linking the alleged 2013 video to an officially recognised unexplained aerial event.
The widely circulated 2020 video
A better documented media item appeared in October 2020, when Getty Images distributed editorial footage originating from Rumble showing several bright blue moving lights reportedly observed from a balcony overlooking the Monaco area.
The accompanying description claimed that unusual blue objects had been appearing for weeks and dismissed simple explanations such as insects or consumer drones. However, those statements formed part of the uploader’s description rather than an independent investigation. Getty distributed the footage as user-generated editorial material and did not present it as verified evidence of an unidentified craft.[Getty Images]gettyimages.com.mxGetty ImagesFlying UFOs have been active for weeks in the luxurious city of… Vídeo de stock - Getty Images…
Several important limitations remain:
- no original image files have been released;
- no calibrated analysis of the camera is available;
- no synchronised recordings from other observers have surfaced;
- no radar or air traffic data accompanied the video;
- no published technical investigation identified the objects.
Consequently, while the footage remains one of Monaco’s best-known UFO videos, it does not meet the evidential standard required to establish the presence of an unexplained aerial phenomenon.
What each case lacks
The recurring feature across Monaco’s UFO claims is not the similarity of what witnesses reported, but the similarity of what is missing.
The strongest missing elements include:
Missing evidenceWhy it mattersMultiple independent witnessesHelps distinguish genuine external events from individual perception.Original image or video filesAllows frame-by-frame technical analysis instead of compressed online copies.Camera metadataNeeded to estimate speed, distance and optical effects.Weather and astronomical checksEliminates common causes such as planets, aircraft lighting or atmospheric phenomena.Radar or aviation recordsHelps determine whether conventional aircraft were present.Official investigationProvides documented conclusions instead of speculation.
Without these components, investigators are usually unable to classify a sighting with confidence.
Why Monaco’s videos are difficult to interpret
Monaco presents unusually challenging viewing conditions.
The principality combines:
- dense urban lighting;
- steep coastal terrain;
- reflections from the Mediterranean;
- frequent helicopter traffic;
- luxury yachts with powerful lighting systems;
- nearby airports and busy air corridors along the French Riviera.
These environmental factors can produce misleading impressions of speed, altitude and direction, especially when recorded on consumer cameras with digital zoom or long exposure settings.
Night-time recordings are particularly vulnerable because a distant aircraft, drone or illuminated vessel may appear to change speed or direction as autofocus, atmospheric distortion and camera movement interact.
None of these explanations automatically accounts for every reported light. They do, however, demonstrate why video evidence alone is rarely sufficient to establish an anomalous object.
How reliable are Monaco’s sighting statistics?
Monaco periodically appears in online articles claiming remarkable national UFO rankings, including assertions that it has Europe’s longest average sightings.
Those figures should be interpreted cautiously.
Because they are based on only a handful of reports, a single unusually long observation can dramatically change the average duration. Small databases also become sensitive to later corrections or removal of duplicate records.
The underlying statistics therefore reveal more about the limitations of tiny datasets than about Monaco being an exceptional UFO hotspot. The available evidence supports the conclusion that Monaco has a very sparse reporting history rather than an unusually rich one.[nuforc.org]nuforc.orgData Bank | NUFORCLatest UFO SightingsSeptember 6, 2021…
What the available evidence suggests
Taken together, Monaco’s known UFO incidents form a remarkably small and weakly documented collection of cases.
The available public record contains:
- a handful of civilian sighting reports;
- one widely circulated 2020 video of unidentified lights;
- references to earlier videos with incomplete provenance;
- no publicly accessible government investigation files;
- no confirmed case supported simultaneously by witness testimony, technical imagery, radar evidence and published analysis.
As a result, Monaco is better understood as an example of how limited evidence can acquire disproportionate visibility online than as a country with a substantial catalogue of unexplained UFO incidents. The available material remains historically interesting, but none of the currently traceable cases provides sufficient documentation to establish an unresolved aerial phenomenon beyond reasonable conventional interpretation.[Getty Images]gettyimages.com.mxGetty ImagesFlying UFOs have been active for weeks in the luxurious city of… Vídeo de stock - Getty Images…
