Sierra Leone has no well-documented national “UFO wave”, no publicly identified government investigation programme and no strong body of cases supported by radar, photographs, physical traces or contemporaneous official records.

This short chronology should not be mistaken for a complete census. Sierra Leone has no publicly searchable national UAP reporting system comparable with the former American Project Blue Book archive. International databases are voluntary, disproportionately used in countries where UFO organisations are well known, and may omit reports made orally, in local media or to police and aviation authorities. Apparent scarcity therefore measures archival coverage as much as the frequency of unusual observations.
The 1963 Kenema case was a rocket, not an unknown craft
The strongest archival case is also the clearest debunking. A civilian in Kenema reported an unidentified flying object on 27 November 1963. The surviving Project Blue Book record describes one bright object approaching from the west, producing light at regular intervals, surrounded by a large bright halo and followed by a rippled trail. Internal correspondence from the US Air Force Foreign Technology Division states that the phenomenon was generated by the launch of an Atlas-Centaur 2 from Cape Canaveral at 19:03 UTC. This case matters because it demonstrates how an authentic UFO report can be both sincere and fully conventional. Seen from thousands of kilometres away, high-altitude exhaust illuminated by sunlight can form an apparently enormous halo, pulses or ripples that bear little resemblance to an ordinary aircraft. The witness did observe something unusual; “unidentified” described its status at the moment of observation, not its ultimate nature.
Project Blue Book itself recorded 12,618 reports between 1947 and 1969, of which 701 remained unidentified. The 2013 Kenema encounter is vivid but evidentially weak
The best-known modern Sierra Leone account appeared on Reddit in 2020, roughly seven years after the alleged event. The writer said that, while travelling at night with a driver and three Sierra Leonean engineers towards Kenema, the group saw a brilliant star-like light apparently following their vehicle. Taken purely as testimony, the account contains features often regarded as highly anomalous: several witnesses, extended duration, silence, apparent pursuit and extreme acceleration. Yet every important measurement was estimated retrospectively. The claimed height of 30–50 feet, width of about 20 feet and ten-mile displacement were not derived from triangulation or known reference points. Several weaknesses prevent the report from becoming a robust case:

A bright astronomical object can appear to follow a moving vehicle because its great distance causes its bearing to change very little. This is commonly experienced with the Moon or a bright planet. Such an effect could explain the early phase and the impression that the light remained fixed when the vehicle drove away. It does not straightforwardly explain the claimed instantaneous repositioning, but that element depends entirely on frightened observers making distance and speed judgements at night without fixed references.
Other conventional possibilities include an aircraft landing light, a bright planet intermittently obscured by trees or terrain, a local light source viewed through humid air, or more than one light being interpreted as a single pursuing object. None can be demonstrated from the available material. The responsible classification is therefore unverified, not “extraterrestrial” and not definitively debunked.
The Lungi streak shows how quickly a sky trail becomes a mystery
On 6 June 2025, residents reported a conspicuous bright line over Lungi in Port Loko District. A local news report also quoted an observer in Freetown who described a distinct trail extending towards Lungi and resembling the stream left by a jet, although she believed it did not match the normal approach route to the airport. The available description favours a persistent trail rather than a compact flying object. A meteor normally produces a rapidly moving flash lasting seconds, although a high-altitude train may remain after the meteor has vanished. Space debris usually fragments into several moving points rather than leaving one aircraft-like line suspended for a long period. A contrail, rocket exhaust trail or narrow cloud illuminated at a favourable angle fits the reported stationary-looking pathway more comfortably.
Lungi International Airport makes aircraft-generated explanations especially relevant, even if the trail did not appear to follow a familiar passenger route. Aircraft may be climbing, holding, diverting or crossing at high altitude rather than approaching the runway. Perspective can also make a distant east–west track appear to point towards Lungi. Without the exact observation time, compass bearings, duration and original uncompressed imagery, however, the case cannot be closed with confidence.
The 2025 event should therefore be labelled unresolved but low-anomaly. It is supported by several observers and imagery, making it better documented than the 2013 story, but nothing reported demonstrates controlled manoeuvring, a structured vehicle or behaviour outside known atmospheric and aerospace phenomena.
What regional variation really shows
The few surviving reports cluster around two very different settings. Kenema, in the east, appears in both the 1963 archive and the 2013 testimony. The western coastal corridor around Freetown and Lungi produced the 2025 trail report. With only three usable cases, this distribution cannot establish hotspots.
The locations instead reflect where witnesses, communications and external institutions were available:
- Kenema in 1963: a literate witness wrote to the American authorities about a conspicuous rocket plume, creating an archival trail in Project Blue Book.
- Rural eastern Sierra Leone in 2013: an expatriate development worker later posted an account on an international social platform, while the Sierra Leonean witnesses left no separately accessible record.
- Freetown–Lungi in 2025: dense population, mobile-phone cameras and online local news allowed a broad daylight event to circulate rapidly.
This is a reporting-system pattern, not evidence that anomalous craft favour particular districts. Rural observations are less likely to be photographed, timestamped or preserved online, while sightings near Freetown and an international airport are more likely to reach journalists and social media.
Connections to neighbouring West African reports should also be handled cautiously. The 1963 rocket was observed over Monrovia because the same high-altitude plume was visible across a large region. Why the national record remains so thin
Live searches of Sierra Leonean government, police, parliamentary and public-facing aviation material did not reveal a dedicated UFO or UAP office, a declassified national case collection or a recognised Sierra Leonean research organisation. This does not prove that no reports exist in internal files. It means there is no discoverable public system through which researchers can compare incidents consistently.
Private international websites inviting Sierra Leonean submissions provide little help when they contain few cases, weak provenance or no visible investigation. - duration and weather conditions;
- original image or video files with metadata;
- independent statements from each witness;
- checks against aircraft, satellite, rocket and meteor records.

The 2013 story remains compelling to some readers because its strongest claims cannot now be tested.
On the available evidence, Sierra Leone has one well-documented, conclusively explained UFO report; one photographed but probably conventional sky-trail event; and one notable anecdotal encounter whose evidential weaknesses prevent reliable classification. There is no substantiated case for extraterrestrial visitation, advanced unknown technology or a geographically meaningful pattern of activity within the country.
