Introduction
The two videos most often cited as evidence of unidentified aerial phenomena over Dili form the core of Timor-Leste’s modern UFO record. They are also the weakest point in any claim that the country possesses compelling visual evidence of extraordinary objects. Both clips have circulated widely on social media and video-sharing platforms, but neither is supported by an original recording, an identified camera operator, independently interviewed witnesses, or technical data that would allow meaningful forensic analysis. As a result, they remain examples of unverified footage under evidence review, not confirmed unexplained incidents.
This distinction is important for understanding the broader Timor-Leste UFO record. Rather than presenting convincing visual proof, the Dili videos illustrate how poor provenance, inconsistent metadata and repeated reposting can prevent investigators from reaching reliable conclusions.
Source and date contradictions
The most obvious problem with both Dili videos is that basic facts about them cannot be established with confidence.
The earlier clip, commonly labelled as a 2019 UFO over Dili, appears in multiple reposts carrying broadly similar titles but little supporting information. Different uploads omit essential details such as the exact recording date, filming location within the city, camera model and identity of the person who captured it. No publicly available version appears to be traceable to an original upload accompanied by first-hand testimony or raw footage.
The later clip, commonly described as showing an object over Dili Harbour in 2026, suffers from similar issues. Different reposts attribute different dates to what appears to be the same footage. Some descriptions provide only a month, while others present a specific day without explaining the source of that information. The videos are typically hosted on channels that aggregate alleged UFO sightings from numerous countries rather than conducting local investigation or documenting provenance.
These inconsistencies matter because accurate timing is essential for verification. A confirmed date and approximate recording time would allow investigators to compare the footage with:
- commercial and military aircraft movements;
- satellite passes;
- astronomical objects visible above Dili;
- weather conditions and atmospheric visibility;
- maritime traffic within Dili Bay.
Without those fixed reference points, many potential conventional explanations cannot be properly tested.
Why missing original files matter
The absence of original recordings is arguably the largest evidential weakness.
Videos uploaded to social media are normally compressed, resized and re-encoded. During that process they lose information needed for technical examination, including:
- original frame rate;
- compression history;
- camera metadata;
- GPS information (if recorded);
- lens characteristics;
- exposure settings.
These details often allow analysts to distinguish between genuine movement by an object and movement created by camera shake, autofocus hunting or digital stabilisation.
No publicly available version of the Dili footage includes this information.
Equally important is the lack of documented witness testimony. A credible case normally benefits from interviews establishing what observers actually saw before and after filming, how long the object remained visible, whether it changed direction, produced sound or was seen by multiple independent observers. None of these supporting elements have entered the public record for the Dili videos.
What the images can and cannot prove
Viewed purely as images, the Dili clips show distant aerial objects whose appearance is insufficient to determine their nature.
The footage does not provide reliable measurements of:
- size;
- altitude;
- speed;
- acceleration;
- distance from the camera;
- physical shape.
Perspective plays a major role. A small nearby object can resemble a much larger distant one, while digital zoom frequently enlarges compression artefacts until they appear to have defined edges or unusual geometry.
Likewise, descriptions such as “disc-shaped” or “saucer-shaped” represent interpretations rather than objective measurements. A bright object recorded through atmospheric haze or heavy digital sharpening can appear flattened or rimmed even if its actual form is quite different.
None of the publicly available versions demonstrates behaviours generally regarded as stronger evidence in UAP investigations, such as abrupt right-angle manoeuvres, clearly measured extreme acceleration, interaction with surrounding aircraft, or simultaneous confirmation from multiple independent sensors.
Consequently, the footage cannot establish that an extraordinary craft was present. It documents only that an unidentified visual object appears in a low-information recording.
Conventional objects and camera artefacts
Because the available evidence is limited, several ordinary explanations remain plausible.
Potential explanations include:
- distant aircraft viewed under unusual lighting;
- helicopters seen at long range;
- balloons drifting at varying altitudes;
- birds briefly crossing the field of view;
- maritime objects near the horizon appearing elevated because of atmospheric conditions;
- camera autofocus changes;
- digital compression artefacts;
- rolling-shutter distortion;
- image sharpening during reposting.
None of these explanations has been conclusively demonstrated. Equally, none can be ruled out because the evidence required to eliminate them does not exist.
This is an important distinction. “Unidentified” in this context means that insufficient information survives for confident identification, not that the footage demonstrates an unknown technology.
Why independent verification has not emerged
Another notable feature of the Dili videos is the absence of corroboration.
Publicly available material does not include:
- radar records;
- air traffic documentation;
- government investigative reports;
- scientific image analysis;
- police reports;
- named eyewitness interviews;
- multiple camera angles recorded independently.
Nor have major Timorese news organisations published detailed investigations establishing the circumstances under which either video was recorded. This absence does not prove the sightings were fabricated, but it means the claims remain unsupported beyond the circulating footage itself. How the Dili videos compare with stronger UAP evidence
When investigators evaluate video evidence, they generally look for a combination of factors rather than dramatic imagery alone.
Stronger cases typically include:
- authenticated original files;
- continuous recording without unexplained edits;
- identifiable witnesses willing to be interviewed;
- independent observers;
- precise timing and location;
- corroborating radar or sensor information;
- documented chain of custody.
The Dili videos satisfy virtually none of these criteria in the publicly available record.
Instead, they represent a common pattern seen in many online UFO claims: a visually interesting but technically limited clip repeatedly shared without the underlying evidence necessary for rigorous examination.
Current evidential assessment
Within the wider Timor-Leste UFO chronology, the Dili videos remain noteworthy because they are among the few widely circulated visual claims associated with the country. Their significance, however, lies more in illustrating the limits of available evidence than in demonstrating an unexplained phenomenon.
The most defensible assessment is therefore:
- the videos are genuine pieces of circulating online footage, not well-documented investigated incidents;
- their provenance cannot presently be established with confidence;
