2022–2023: Videos with limited supporting evidence

By the early 2020s, many Namibian UFO reports had shifted from newspaper reporting to short online videos and social-media posts. These typically show bright lights or distant moving objects without accompanying witness interviews, precise times, astronomical checks or radar information.

Because these reports usually lack corroborating evidence, they contribute little to establishing long-term patterns. Most remain simply unidentified rather than scientifically unexplained.

Why Walvis Bay and the central coast dominate

The geographic concentration around Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is one of the clearest features of Namibia’s UFO history. Several factors make this region particularly likely to generate reports without requiring an exotic explanation.

First, the coastline provides exceptionally dark skies away from urban lighting, making bright meteors and atmospheric events especially conspicuous.

Second, many observations occur over the Atlantic Ocean. Human observers often struggle to estimate the distance, altitude and speed of bright objects seen against an empty sea horizon. A meteor hundreds of kilometres away can easily appear to plunge into the water.

Third, Walvis Bay has historically hosted busy maritime, aviation and industrial activity. Aircraft, navigation lighting, offshore vessels and occasional military operations increase the variety of unfamiliar lights visible at night.
