Introduction
The 1978–79 Kuwait UFO wave remains the defining episode in the country’s history of unidentified aerial phenomena. Rather than a single dramatic encounter, it consisted of a concentrated series of eight reported sightings between November 1978 and mid-December 1978, followed by another highly publicised sighting over Kuwait City in January 1979. The reports drew attention because they involved oilfield workers, multiple civilian witnesses, photographs published in local newspapers, and an official scientific investigation commissioned by the Kuwaiti government. Although the investigation did not identify the objects, neither did it conclude that they were extraterrestrial spacecraft. Instead, the episode became an enduring example of how governments sometimes investigate unusual aerial reports without reaching a definitive explanation.[WikiLeaks:48AM]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
The sightings from November to January
The wave began on 9 November 1978 with reports from northern Kuwait, particularly around Kuwait Oil Company facilities north of Kuwait City. According to a declassified US Embassy cable summarising the official investigation, the Kuwaiti government responded by appointing a committee of experts from the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Their report, released on 20 January 1979, documented eight sightings occurring between November and 14 December.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
The geographical concentration distinguished the episode from isolated UFO reports. Several early observations came from workers at or near petroleum gathering centres, where any unidentified aircraft naturally raised concerns about industrial security and national infrastructure. The reports emerged during a period of heightened regional uncertainty as the Iranian Revolution unfolded across the Gulf, making unidentified aerial activity a genuine security issue rather than simply a matter of public curiosity.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
The official chronology indicates that the wave did not consist of identical events. Witnesses described luminous aerial objects exhibiting unusual movements, but the accounts varied in duration, appearance and behaviour. As is common with historical UFO cases, the surviving documentation preserves only summaries of many observations rather than complete witness interviews, limiting modern attempts to reconstruct each individual sighting.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
Oilfield reports and the Kuwait City photographs
One reason the wave attracted official attention was its association with Kuwait’s strategically vital oil industry.
The US Embassy cable records that a senior Kuwait Oil Company official described an unusual coincidence during one of the northern oilfield sightings. According to the account, an automatic pumping system unexpectedly shut itself down while the unidentified object was reportedly present and restarted after it disappeared. The embassy explicitly noted that this incident was not analysed in the KISR committee’s published report, leaving its relationship to the sighting unresolved. No independent technical documentation confirming the malfunction has since become publicly available.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
In January 1979, the story shifted from the oilfields into Kuwait City itself. Newspapers carried front-page reports of another unidentified object, accompanied by photographs that rapidly became the visual symbol of the entire wave. Later local retrospectives identified the photographer as Ali Shash and preserved television interviews recorded shortly after the event with both the photographer and an eyewitness overlooking Qadsia Stadium. These materials demonstrate that photographs were genuinely published and discussed publicly, although they do not establish the nature of the photographed object.[2:48AM]248am.com2:48AMThe Story of the First UFO Sighting in Kuwait – 2:48AM2:48AMThe Story of the First UFO Sighting in Kuwait – 2:48AM
The photographs occupy an unusual place in the history of the case. They are among the few surviving visual records associated with Kuwait’s UFO wave, yet they have never been supported by the sort of detailed technical analysis that would allow firm conclusions regarding distance, size or identity. Consequently, they remain historically important but evidentially limited.
What the official investigation actually concluded
The KISR investigation is often cited in later UFO literature, but its conclusions are frequently overstated.
According to the declassified diplomatic reporting, the committee rejected suggestions that the objects were foreign espionage devices. At the same time, it declined to identify them as extraterrestrial spacecraft. One committee representative reportedly stated that the investigators simply lacked sufficient information to say with certainty that the objects were not “spaceships”, a statement reflecting uncertainty rather than endorsement of an alien explanation.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
The committee instead recommended practical measures aimed at improving the protection of Kuwait’s territory, airspace and oil infrastructure. From the perspective of government officials, the principal concern appears to have been national security rather than proving extraordinary hypotheses. The unexplained reports highlighted weaknesses in monitoring Kuwait’s airspace regardless of what ultimately caused the sightings.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
This distinction is important because later retellings often compress the investigation into a simplified narrative suggesting that scientists “confirmed” alien craft. The surviving official record does not support that interpretation. The documented conclusion was that the available evidence was insufficient for a definitive identification.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
Competing explanations and remaining uncertainties
The historical record leaves several plausible interpretations without establishing any of them conclusively.
The official cable notes speculation at the time that helicopters or hovercraft associated with developments in neighbouring Iran might have been responsible for some reports. Given the political instability of the period, unidentified military or civilian aircraft represented a reasonable hypothesis from the perspective of security officials.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
Other conventional possibilities—including atmospheric effects, astronomical objects, misidentified aircraft or multiple unrelated causes across different sightings—cannot be ruled out. Because the documented reports were spread across several weeks and involved different witnesses under different conditions, there is no reason to assume they all shared a single explanation.
Equally, there is no publicly available physical evidence demonstrating an extraterrestrial origin. No recovered materials, radar records, flight data or technical analyses capable of resolving the case have entered the public domain. The available evidence therefore supports describing the episode as an officially investigated series of unidentified sightings rather than evidence of alien visitation.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
How the wave entered public memory
Although Kuwait has produced occasional later UFO reports, the 1978–79 wave continues to dominate discussion of the country’s UFO history because it combined several unusual features:
- multiple reported sightings over a relatively short period;
- observations near strategically important oil facilities;
- an official investigation by KISR;
- publication of photographs in Kuwaiti newspapers;
- surviving diplomatic records documenting the government’s response.[WikiLeaks:48AM]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
Over time, the episode has accumulated additional claims that are difficult to verify, including assertions that it represented the first UFO sighting in the Arab world or that investigators effectively endorsed an extraterrestrial explanation. Neither proposition is supported by the strongest surviving documentary evidence. The available records instead show a more nuanced story: Kuwait experienced an unusual cluster of aerial reports that officials considered important enough to investigate, yet the investigation ended with unresolved questions rather than extraordinary conclusions.[WikiLeaks]wikileaks.org1979KUWAIT00486 eCable: 1979KUWAIT00486_eJanuary 29, 1979…
