Introduction
The Boianai encounter of 26–27 June 1959 remains one of the most discussed UFO cases in Papua New Guinea because it combined unusually prolonged observations, numerous witnesses and detailed contemporary notes. At the Anglican mission at Boianai in what is now Milne Bay Province, the Reverend William Booth Gill and mission staff reported watching luminous aerial objects over two consecutive evenings. They also claimed to see human-like figures on or near the main object and believed some of those figures responded to hand and torch signals from the ground. Despite the extraordinary nature of these claims, no photographs, radar records, physical traces or independently verified instrumental evidence were obtained. The events of 26 and 27 June
William Gill was an Australian Anglican missionary stationed at Boianai. Before the famous observations, he had already become aware of reports of unusual lights in the surrounding region and had himself seen unexplained lights earlier in 1959. Importantly, his correspondence before the main encounter shows a cautious attitude. On the evening of 26 June, Gill noticed a bright object above the sea shortly before sunset. He began making notes as events unfolded rather than relying entirely on memory afterwards. As additional mission residents gathered, witnesses described a large luminous object apparently hovering at a relatively fixed position while smaller lights manoeuvred nearby.
The observation continued for several hours. Cloud periodically obscured the object, but the witnesses reported seeing it repeatedly reappear. Gill estimated that what looked like figures became visible on the upper part of the object. The following evening, 27 June, similar activity was reported. During this second observation, Gill and others claimed they deliberately attempted visual communication. Several witnesses waved towards the object. Gill later wrote that one or more apparent figures seemed to wave back. At another point, a torch was flashed towards the object, after which witnesses believed the object responded by rocking or altering its apparent position. The Boianai reports contain several distinct categories of claims, not all of which carry the same evidential weight.
The luminous object. Nearly all versions of the account agree that a bright, unusually luminous object remained visible for an extended period. Smaller accompanying objects. Gill recorded additional smaller lights approaching and departing from the principal object. These were sometimes described as moving rapidly before apparently merging with or separating from the larger object. Human-like figures. The most controversial claim concerns the apparent occupants. Gill described seeing several dark, human-shaped forms on what appeared to be the top of the main object. He believed they were moving naturally rather than remaining fixed silhouettes. Signalling behaviour. The reported exchange of waves and torch signals has become central to later discussions of the case. Gill interpreted the apparent responses as deliberate acknowledgement from the figures. How many witnesses were there?
The case is frequently described as involving either 25, 37 or 38 witnesses. These differing figures do not necessarily represent contradictory evidence.
People arrived and departed during the observations on both evenings, meaning the group was not static. Gill’s formal report includes a signature list from 27 witnesses, while later publications often refer to approximately 37 mission residents who observed some portion of the events over the two evenings. Some modern summaries round this to 38. The witness group also differed in background and experience. It included Gill himself, mission teachers, assistants and local residents associated with the Anglican mission. While this diversity reduces the likelihood of a single individual inventing the account, it does not eliminate the possibility of shared misinterpretation during a prolonged group observation.
Which claims remain independently unverified?
The Boianai encounter has survived decades of discussion because several elements appear unusually well documented for a UFO report. Nevertheless, its strongest claims remain independently unverified.
There is no authenticated photograph or film of the principal object. No radar tracking has been linked to the observations. No physical landing site, recovered material or measurable environmental trace was documented. The reported occupants likewise remain observational claims only. Although multiple witnesses believed they saw figures, there is no independent evidence establishing that these were physical beings rather than distant silhouettes, lighting effects or perceptual interpretations.
The signalling episode presents similar difficulties. Witnesses sincerely believed that the figures reacted to their gestures and torch flashes, but no recording exists that would allow the sequence to be independently analysed. The apparent responses therefore remain dependent upon eyewitness testimony alone.
Why investigators reached different conclusions
Supporters of the Boianai case point to several unusual strengths.
Gill produced notes while events were occurring rather than reconstructing everything much later. His pre-sighting correspondence also portrays him as initially sceptical rather than eager to promote extraordinary explanations. Many investigators who interviewed him later considered him a careful and sincere observer. In the early 1970s, astronomer J. Official investigators, however, were considerably more cautious. Royal Australian Air Force assessments suggested that at least some observations could have involved bright planets viewed through variable cloud, combined with atmospheric effects and the influence of expectation. The principal divide is therefore not over whether witnesses genuinely believed they saw something unusual. Rather, it concerns whether their descriptions accurately represented a physical structured craft with occupants or whether an unusual combination of natural phenomena and human perception produced a convincing but mistaken interpretation.
What the Boianai witnesses ultimately demonstrate
Within Papua New Guinea’s UFO history, the Boianai encounter stands out because of the combination of prolonged observation, multiple contemporaneous witnesses and detailed written documentation. Those features make it considerably stronger than many isolated anecdotal reports.
At the same time, the case illustrates the limits of eyewitness testimony. Multiple sincere observers can produce a detailed and internally consistent account without creating independent proof of the extraordinary interpretation they favour.
