Between 2009 and roughly 2015, the Meldpunt UFO’s boven Surinaams Territorium (MUST) became Suriname’s principal civilian organisation for collecting, investigating and documenting reports of unidentified objects in the sky. Why MUST was founded and how reports were collected

MUST was formally established on 21 August 2009 with the aim of documenting UFO reports across Suriname and encouraging objective investigation rather than speculation. Tanya Wijngaarde, who later completed a doctoral dissertation examining UFO belief and reporting in Suriname, was among its founders and principal investigators. The organisation relied almost entirely on volunteers. Witnesses submitted reports through the group’s website, by email, telephone or personal contact. Investigators then attempted to reconstruct each event by gathering information such as:

  • the exact time and location;
  • weather conditions;
  • viewing direction;
  • estimated duration;
  • witness descriptions;
  • photographs or video when available; and
  • possible conventional explanations including aircraft, weather balloons, satellites, rockets and astronomical objects.

This process deliberately began with ordinary explanations before considering a case unresolved. As the archive expanded, reports arrived from Paramaribo, coastal districts and the country’s interior. Many involved distant lights observed at night, while others described daylight discs, geometric shapes or apparently stationary objects. How field investigations worked in practice

Unlike official accident investigators, MUST had no access to radar, military records or specialised equipment. Investigations therefore depended heavily on witness testimony and whatever physical evidence observers could provide.

Typically, volunteers compared reported flight paths with known aviation activity, checked whether rocket launches from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou could account for unusual lights, and considered atmospheric or astronomical explanations. Solved cases reveal the value of investigation

Several of MUST’s best-known investigations ended not with extraordinary discoveries but with ordinary explanations.

The frequently discussed Weg naar Zee sighting illustrates this approach. Witnesses described what appeared to be a classic metallic flying disc, yet subsequent investigation concluded that the object was almost certainly a weather balloon. Similarly, when unusual lights were photographed over Commewijne in April 2014, MUST examined whether the observation coincided with a rocket launch from nearby French Guiana. These examples show that the archive is valuable not because it accumulated unexplained stories, but because it documented how careful checking could reduce the number of genuinely unidentified reports.

Why some reports remained unresolved

Not every investigation reached a conventional explanation. According to MUST’s published summaries, dozens of reports were examined and a significant proportion were identified, while a smaller number remained officially unresolved after investigation. By the group’s fifth anniversary it reported 81 recorded sightings, with 11 still unidentified despite attempts to explain them. However, “unidentified” in the MUST archive usually reflects insufficient evidence, not positive evidence for extraordinary craft.

Several recurring problems limited what investigators could establish:

  • photographs were blurry, distant or unavailable;
  • witnesses reported events long after they occurred;
  • precise locations and viewing directions were missing;
  • multiple independent witness statements were often unavailable;
  • meteorological and aviation records were difficult to obtain retrospectively; and
  • some original material disappeared before researchers could preserve it.

The well-known Paramaribo (Leysweg) 2001 incident illustrates these difficulties. Numerous witnesses reportedly observed and photographed an unusual object years before MUST existed. When investigators later attempted to reconstruct the event, the original photographs and recordings could no longer be located. This prevented meaningful technical analysis even though the sighting itself appears to have involved numerous observers. The strengths and limits of a civilian archive

MUST’s greatest contribution was organisational rather than evidential. Before its creation, Suriname had no comparable civilian database bringing together reports from different regions, interviewing witnesses and publishing investigative summaries. Nevertheless, the archive has important limitations.

Because MUST relied on volunteers, investigations varied in depth from case to case. Financial constraints limited travel, specialised equipment and long-term data preservation. Much of the archive survives only through summaries, media reports and Wijngaarde’s later academic research rather than a fully accessible collection of original case files. Another limitation is selection bias. The database records only sightings that witnesses chose to report. It cannot estimate how many unusual observations went unreported or determine whether reporting patterns reflected actual aerial phenomena or simply changing public awareness of MUST itself.

Within the broader history of UFO reports in Suriname, MUST represents the country’s most sustained civilian investigative effort. It created a structured reporting channel, documented dozens of sightings and demonstrated that systematic checking often produced ordinary explanations while leaving a smaller number of genuinely unidentified—but poorly evidenced—cases.
