What Really Lies Behind Malta's UFO Reports?
Malta has a modest but persistent history of UFO reports, ranging from nineteenth-century maritime lights to modern photographs, videos and organised skywatching.

Introduction
Several Maltese incidents are nevertheless worth examining. Some have plausible astronomical or geological explanations; others remain unresolved only in the limited sense that the evidence is too poor to identify the object. Malta’s UFO chronology
Malta’s best-known cases do not form a continuous official record. Instead, they survive through old newspapers, local reporting, private websites and occasional academic or sceptical commentary. This makes any national chronology provisional: it reflects what was preserved and republished, not necessarily the true number or geographical distribution of sightings.
18 June 1845 — luminous bodies at sea. The earliest frequently cited case occurred aboard a brig reportedly travelling towards Malta. A contemporary newspaper account described sudden heat, a sulphurous smell and three luminous bodies emerging from the sea about half a mile from the vessel, remaining visible for roughly ten minutes. Later researchers proposed that glowing gas associated with submarine volcanic activity between Malta and Sicily might explain the observation. That interpretation fits the reported sulphur smell, but remains speculative because the vessel’s identity, exact position and meteorological conditions are uncertain. October 1989 — the Xemxija Bay photograph. A photograph published in The Times reportedly showed a lozenge-shaped object above Xemxija Bay. According to the surviving account, the photographer noticed a flash through the viewfinder and afterwards saw only a speck that appeared to disappear. A 1991 article preserved by the University of Malta treated the picture as a lesson in perception and interpretation rather than proof of an extraordinary vehicle. February–March 2009 — the moving bright light. Residents reported a brilliant object appearing after sunset in the western sky, seemingly hovering or moving erratically over local landmarks. Astronomers identified Venus as the likely source. Atmospheric turbulence near the horizon can make a bright planet shimmer, change colour and appear to dart or wobble, while the observer’s changing position can make it seem to move relative to buildings. August 2011 — the Birżebbuġa fireball. A resident filmed a burning object travelling from the direction of Żurrieq towards the coast and described it as fast-moving and apparently “dancing”. The Astronomical Society of Malta judged a bright meteor, or fireball, to be the most plausible explanation, noting that the sighting occurred close to the Perseid meteor-shower period. April 2012 — lights near Gudja and Malta International Airport. Amateur footage was reported to show two objects hovering in the vicinity of the airport. The published material did not provide radar confirmation, identifiable witnesses, precise viewing geometry or an authoritative investigation. Because Gudja lies beside Malta’s principal airport, ordinary aircraft, landing lights and objects moving towards or away from the observer are unavoidable competing explanations. July 2012 — the Qawra photograph. A further photographed object was reported near the horizon off Qawra. As with several Maltese image cases, the public record consisted mainly of a witness account and a reproduced picture rather than the original digital file, complete metadata and a sequence of images. 19 March 2013 — the Marsaxlokk oval. A black, oval object was photographed near the Delimara power-station chimney. The picture was attributed to an unnamed police officer and was passed to a private UFO website. No independent witness statements, original-file examination, flight information or official police investigation were published. The alleged occupation of the photographer may sound reassuring, but anonymity prevents verification and professional status cannot compensate for missing evidence. 2025 — organised contact gatherings. A local group associated with Kuntatt–UFO Malta attracted public attention by holding night-time gatherings in places with relatively dark skies. Participants used meditation in an attempt to initiate “close encounters of the fifth kind”, a practice based on claims that consciousness can attract or communicate with non-human intelligence. Organisers said attendees had observed unexplained lights and night-vision objects, while also acknowledging that they could not establish an extraterrestrial origin. Why some parts of Malta generate more reports
The apparent distribution of sightings is shaped at least as much by geography and human activity as by any unexplained phenomenon. Southern locations such as Gudja, Marsaxlokk, Delimara and Birżebbuġa lie near Malta International Airport, industrial facilities, shipping routes and the Freeport. Residents there encounter aircraft lights, helicopters, maritime traffic, exhaust plumes and illuminated infrastructure against open coastal horizons. An unfamiliar object seen near such landmarks may appear stationary when approaching head-on or may seem exceptionally fast when distance is misjudged.
Northern and western coastal areas—including Qawra, Xemxija and Miġra l-Ferħa—offer long views over the sea. Such settings are attractive for skywatching, but an empty horizon removes many of the reference points needed to estimate altitude, speed and scale. Gozo and less urbanised coastal sites provide darker conditions than much of the main island, making satellites, meteors and faint celestial objects easier to see. However, a scientific survey of Maltese night-sky brightness found that most of the archipelago is heavily affected by artificial light, with the Milky Way visible from only a small proportion of the surveyed area. No reliable dataset currently demonstrates that one Maltese district has a statistically meaningful concentration of genuinely anomalous incidents. Media coverage creates its own map: a photograph near a recognisable location such as Delimara or the airport is more likely to be reported and shared than an ambiguous light seen over an unnamed rural field.
What Malta’s official record does—and does not—show
Unlike the United Kingdom, which released extensive Ministry of Defence UFO files, Malta does not appear to maintain a dedicated public UAP archive or reporting office. Searches of Maltese government and military material reveal ordinary mechanisms for aviation, security and Freedom of Information matters, but not a specialised national programme comparable to historical foreign UFO desks.
The Armed Forces of Malta states that it holds operational reports, internal memoranda, security correspondence and other documents connected with its duties. For Malta, the archival weakness is particularly important. Newspaper articles sometimes recycle information from private UFO databases, anonymous witnesses or compressed video clips. Original negatives and digital files are rarely made available, and published stories do not generally include air-traffic records, weather data or formal witness interviews. Consequently, Malta’s UFO history is better described as a collection of reported anomalies than as a body of investigated cases.
Confirmed, contested and explained claims
The most useful way to assess the Maltese record is to separate the existence of a report from the interpretation placed upon it.
Confirmed observations are limited to modest propositions: people reported unusual lights; newspapers published photographs; a historical source described luminous bodies at sea; and modern groups have organised skywatching events. Plausibly explained cases include the 2009 light identified as Venus and the 2011 burning object assessed as a meteor. Both explanations match the reported direction, timing or visual behaviour, and both came from astronomers familiar with common sources of misidentification. Contested or unresolved cases include the Xemxija, Qawra and Marsaxlokk photographs and the Gudja video. They are unresolved primarily because the record is inadequate. A blurred or isolated object cannot establish extraordinary flight characteristics unless its distance, duration and movement are measured. An image also needs provenance: the original file, an unbroken chain of custody, exposure details, lens information and ideally other frames from before and after the event.
Unsupported extraordinary claims include assertions that Maltese sightings demonstrate extraterrestrial visitation or that meditation has produced contact with non-human beings. Such interpretations go beyond the available observations. How a strong Maltese case would be tested
A genuinely important case would not be defined by how strange a photograph looks. It would be defined by the amount of independent information available. Modern scientific proposals for studying unidentified aerial phenomena emphasise simultaneous measurements from different instruments rather than witness testimony alone. Useful evidence would include wide- and narrow-field cameras, accurate timestamps, triangulation from separate locations, radar-derived range, radio-frequency monitoring, acoustic measurements and environmental data. For a Maltese incident, investigators would also need to compare the observation with:
- Malta International Airport movements and published flight tracks;
- Armed Forces, police or rescue-helicopter activity;
- drone operations and local aviation restrictions;
- ship positions and offshore lighting;
- satellite passes and re-entering space debris;
- meteor-shower activity, bright planets and atmospheric conditions;
- the original photograph or video rather than a compressed social-media copy.
Witness credibility would remain relevant, but it would not determine the result. Police officers, pilots, astronomers and military personnel can provide careful descriptions, yet all observers remain vulnerable to perspective errors and unfamiliar viewing conditions. Conversely, an ordinary resident can collect excellent evidence by preserving the original recording, noting compass direction and elevation, and finding independent observers.
What the record supports about Malta’s UFO record
Malta’s UFO record is real as a history of reports, photographs, public curiosity and unresolved perceptions. It is not a verified history of exotic craft. The cases with enough contextual information often move towards ordinary explanations, especially Venus, meteors, aircraft or atmospheric effects. The most celebrated photographic cases remain ambiguous because their provenance and measurement quality are weak.
The 1845 maritime report is Malta’s most unusual historical episode, chiefly because it combines luminous objects, heat and a sulphurous smell. Even there, a possible geological mechanism competes with the UFO interpretation, and the age of the evidence makes decisive testing impossible. Modern cases are better documented in the journalistic sense but rarely in the scientific one.
Malta’s greatest gap is therefore institutional and evidential rather than sensational: reports are scattered across newspapers, private groups and social media, while no transparent national archive brings witness accounts together with aviation, astronomical and meteorological data. Until a Maltese incident produces independent, time-synchronised and technically verifiable records, “unidentified” should be read literally—as a description of incomplete knowledge, not as proof of extraterrestrial origin.
