What the diplomatic cable actually proves

The strongest piece of evidence is not the sighting itself but the existence of an official diplomatic record.

On 31 January 1994, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe transmitted cable 94 DUSHANBE 259 to the U.S. State Department, copying several embassies as well as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Why the missing evidence matters

Could there be ordinary explanations?

The released cable contains little technical information that would allow investigators to test specific hypotheses rigorously.

Several possibilities have been discussed over the years:

  • an astronomical object viewed under unusual atmospheric conditions;
  • a meteor or re-entering space object, although the crew rejected this possibility;
  • a distant aircraft observed under unusual lighting geometry;
