However, no direct evidence confirms volcanic activity at the reported location and time, so this remains a hypothesis rather than a demonstrated solution.

How Malta’s record reappears in the late twentieth century

After scattered nineteenth-century references, Malta’s surviving UFO chronology becomes sparse until the late twentieth century. This gap almost certainly reflects the loss or absence of systematic archives rather than an absence of unusual observations.

One of the best-known modern incidents occurred in October 1989, when The Times published a photograph showing a lozenge-shaped object above Xemxija Bay. According to the original report, the photographer noticed a flash through the camera viewfinder while taking the picture. Looking up immediately afterwards, only a tiny speck remained before apparently disappearing.

The image attracted attention because there was no immediate explanation. However, the surviving academic discussion treated it as an exercise in perception rather than evidence of an alien craft. The accompanying analysis stressed an important point that is often forgotten: the label “unidentified flying object” simply indicated that the object in the photograph had not been identified. It said nothing about its size, distance, speed or origin.

Possible explanations discussed over the years have included photographic artefacts, processing anomalies, misidentified airborne objects and deliberate manipulation. The twenty-first century produced more frequent reports as digital cameras and mobile phones became commonplace. While the quantity of material increased, the overall quality of evidence generally did not.

The 2009 “mystery light”

During February and March 2009, many Maltese residents reported an exceptionally bright object visible soon after sunset. Witnesses described a brilliant light apparently hovering over familiar landmarks before slowly changing position.

Astronomers identified the object as Venus, which was then exceptionally bright in the evening sky. Atmospheric turbulence near the horizon can make the planet shimmer, change colour and appear to move erratically. Observer movement relative to nearby buildings further strengthens the illusion that the object itself is travelling. Airport and coastal videos

From roughly 2010 onwards, online forums and local media began circulating numerous photographs and videos allegedly showing unusual objects over Malta International Airport, coastal areas and Gozo.

These reports vary greatly in quality. Some consist of distant lights filmed with mobile phones; others show objects whose size and distance cannot be estimated because the footage lacks reference points. Which Malta cases still defy explanation?

When assessed using modern investigative standards, very few Maltese reports qualify as strong unexplained cases.

The strongest historical candidate remains the 1845 maritime lights, not because they clearly indicate an unknown craft, but because the event combines multiple reported phenomena—luminous objects, apparent emergence from the sea and an unusual smell—for which no definitive explanation exists. Unfortunately, the historical record is too incomplete for modern analysis.

The 1989 Xemxija photograph remains visually intriguing but scientifically weak because the single image cannot establish the object’s physical characteristics.

Most twenty-first century reports are considerably better documented visually but are generally easier to explain through known causes such as Venus, meteors, aircraft, drones or imaging artefacts.
