According to the surviving report, three members of one family in Abidjan were awake shortly after 1.30 a.m. on 3 October 1952 when they noticed a bright green light crossing the sky from the east. The object was described as appearing briefly stationary before changing colour to orange-red. It reportedly revolved within what witnesses likened to a ring of fire while climbing in a zigzag pattern.
The description continues with a series of changing appearances. The object was said to alter between flat, round and oval shapes while its colours reportedly shifted through purple and gold. One detail frequently overlooked is the final sentence of the intelligence summary. Bright astronomical object
Bright planets or stars viewed under unstable atmospheric conditions can appear to pulse, change colour and shimmer dramatically. Human perception can also create the autokinetic effect, in which a stationary light seems to drift or zigzag when viewed against a dark, featureless sky.
This explanation accounts reasonably well for apparent colour changes and irregular motion but does not naturally explain the initial description of a rapidly moving green light crossing the sky.
Aircraft
Aircraft lights may appear to change colour with changing viewing angles and atmospheric conditions. Under certain circumstances, turns toward or away from an observer can create misleading impressions of hovering or sudden movement.
The difficulty is that no aircraft records accompany the report, and the dramatic changes in shape described by the witnesses would require substantial perceptual distortion or embellishment.
Unknown
Given the absence of critical observational data, the object ultimately remains unidentified. In historical terms, “unidentified” should be understood literally: the available information is insufficient to distinguish confidently between several competing explanations.
Does the Report Have Independent Corroboration?
Some UFO catalogues mention another observation from Soubré in south-western Ivory Coast during roughly the same period. If independently documented, such a report could strengthen the possibility that multiple observers witnessed the same phenomenon across different locations.
The difficulty is that the Soubré account survives primarily through later UFO compilations rather than clearly identified contemporary local reporting.
