The sequence commonly labelled the “Arad wave” did not begin with an aerial encounter. According to contemporary accounts preserved by the Association for the Study of Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena (ASFAN), workers noticed an unusual pattern in a wheat field north of Arad on 23 June 1994. The formation consisted of a central circle surrounded by a larger elliptical ring, with two smaller adjacent markings. The dramatic shepherd encounter
The most striking account from the Arad sequence concerns shepherd Traian Crișan, who reportedly experienced an intense whirlwind before dawn on 27 June 1994.
According to his testimony, violent winds damaged his shelter, killed several sheep and scattered equipment. Within Romanian UFO literature, this became one of the most memorable narratives associated with the Arad wave. From an evidential perspective, however, it has significant limitations:
- the account rests primarily on one principal witness;
- no independently verified photographic or instrumental evidence supports the claimed craft;
- physical damage from the wind event does not itself establish a UFO cause;
- later retellings often merge confirmed storm damage with unverified details about the alleged object.
The incident therefore remains an important witness narrative but not a confirmed close encounter.
What the crop formations do—and do not—establish
Crop formations gave the Arad wave much of its public visibility because they appeared to provide physical evidence rather than simple eyewitness testimony.
Investigators photographed the formations extensively, including aerial images. Samples were reportedly examined for radiation and magnetic anomalies, with negative findings. These negative findings matter because they narrow rather than strengthen extraordinary interpretations. They suggest that investigators did not identify obvious physical signatures that would distinguish the site from an ordinary agricultural environment.

The narrative broadened further during late summer.
Near the village of Bârsa, roughly 77 kilometres from Arad, additional unusual marks were reported in maize fields during August and September 1994. Within Romania’s wider UFO chronology, the Arad events occupy an unusual place. Unlike famous single incidents such as the 1968 Hoia-Baciu photographs, Arad is best understood as a case family rather than a single encounter.
Its significance lies in demonstrating how UFO waves can emerge from the interaction of several processes:
- an attention-grabbing physical anomaly such as a crop formation;
- increased media coverage;
- retrospective reporting of earlier experiences;
- continuing observations of ambiguous lights;
- the gradual integration of unrelated local events into one shared narrative.
Whether any individual Arad report represented an unexplained aerial phenomenon remains uncertain. What the episode clearly demonstrates is the social anatomy of a UFO wave: publicity encourages reporting, reporting encourages pattern recognition, and pattern recognition can transform a collection of separate incidents into a compelling regional story even when the underlying evidence remains heterogeneous and only partly verifiable.
