According to a report published in Le Républicain Lorrain on 20 August 1980, the event occurred around 11:20 p.m. in Cents, a district of Luxembourg City. The witness stated that he noticed a round or oval orange luminous object while getting out of his car near the neighbourhood’s communal television antenna. The most unusual element of the account was the claimed behaviour of the light. The witness said that:

  • the smaller object emitted a brighter light;

Bright lights seen after dark can appear distorted by haze, humidity, thin cloud, or atmospheric turbulence. Such conditions may create the impression that a light changes shape, varies in brightness, or separates into multiple components before merging again.

Perceptual interpretation

Human night vision is highly effective at detecting light but comparatively poor at judging distance, speed, and size in the absence of fixed visual references. A single bright source can appear to accelerate, hover, or shift position because of eye movements, changing brightness, or perspective.

The reported separation and reunion of the smaller light is the most difficult element to explain through simple misperception alone, but it also cannot be independently verified because only one detailed witness account survives.
