What Do Ecuador's UFO Files Really Show?
Ecuador has a genuine history of reported unidentified flying-object incidents, military testimony and a short-lived official investigative initiative. What it does not have—at least in the publicly accessible record—is verified evidence of extraterrestrial craft.

How Ecuador’s official investigation emerged

That larger number originates in material supplied by Rodríguez rather than a searchable Ministry of Defence inventory. The national chronology
Ecuador does not possess a single authoritative chronology comparable to the public case databases maintained by some foreign governments. The following timeline therefore combines contemporary reporting with later retellings, while distinguishing events from the dates on which they became public.
Before the 1990s: Rodríguez has said that he began recording Ecuadorian sightings in the late 1970s and petitioning the Ministry of Defence during the 1980s. Publicly verifiable detail from this period is limited, and later summaries frequently repeat his recollections without reproducing original reports.
1995 — El Tigre military outpost: One of the most frequently cited cases concerns Colonel Eustorgio Pacheco at the El Tigre border detachment. These are potentially interesting aviation reports, but their public presentation lacks the information needed for technical assessment: original radar plots, sensor type, range uncertainty, calibration history, flight tracks, air-traffic records, meteorological conditions and precise observation times.
2021 — Osohuayco lagoon: A mountaineer later told Extra that a huge silent light illuminated the Osohuayco lagoon in Cajas National Park during a July 2021 camping trip. The story was published in 2025 and rests on personal recollection. 2025–26 — renewed media attention: Recent coverage has revived older CEIFO stories, particularly the claim that an extraterrestrial installation lies offshore from Crucita. Why different regions produce different UFO narratives
The geographic distribution of Ecuadorian reports reflects the country’s sharply varied terrain and patterns of military and civilian observation.
The coast and Manabí
The coast contains the most elaborate technology-centred claims. Manta and Crucita appear repeatedly in stories from pilots, naval personnel and radar operators. Chirije, south of Bahía de Caráquez, occupies a different category. It has become associated with UFO-themed tourism and observation events. The Andes
High-altitude areas around Quito, Cuenca, Cajas, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo feature prominently in civilian light reports. Clear horizons and reduced local illumination can make satellites, meteors and bright planets particularly conspicuous. Mountain weather also generates rapidly changing cloud, fog and optical effects.
Lenticular clouds deserve particular attention in the Ecuadorian Andes. They form in airflow over mountains and can appear smooth, stationary and disc-shaped, particularly when illuminated from below or behind. Its dramatic scale and silence make it memorable, but the witnesses had deliberately travelled to a location already associated with UFO stories and were observing at night without instruments. The Amazon and border zone
The El Tigre story anchors Ecuador’s eastern and border-region cases. Remote military posts offer trained observers and relatively dark skies, but they also operate in difficult conditions with limited civilian air-traffic information and few external witnesses. Compression, zoom, camera shake, autofocus, internal reflections and stabilisation artefacts can all transform ordinary lights into apparently unusual objects.
Extraordinary interpretations: Alien visitors, underwater bases and purposeful contact remain unsupported. The radar stories require separate caution. Radar can provide stronger evidence than unaided vision, but a verbal description of a radar return is not equivalent to preserved radar data. False or misleading tracks can arise from anomalous propagation, reflections, interference, software processing and track association errors. A scientifically useful radar case needs the original recording and information about the equipment and operating conditions.
Why Ecuador’s archive remains difficult to evaluate
The central weakness in Ecuador’s UFO record is archival, not merely interpretative. The public can verify that release was authorised, but cannot readily inspect a complete collection showing what each military branch held, which documents CEIFO received, how cases were classified or how investigators reached their conclusions.
The 44-case figure is repeatedly cited, but the publicly available descriptions often derive from Rodríguez, television programmes or articles that reproduce CEIFO material without publishing full files. A credible national archive would need, for every incident:
- the original report and date of submission;
- witness identities and roles, with appropriate privacy protection;
- exact time, coordinates and viewing direction;
- complete photographs or video files with metadata;
- radar, air-traffic and military-flight records where applicable;
- astronomical and meteorological checks;
- the investigator’s reasoning and final classification;
- a clear record of any alteration, copying or loss of evidence.
Without those elements, a case may remain intriguing but cannot be tested independently. The absence of a searchable official repository also allows successive retellings to merge separate accounts, change witness numbers and convert tentative observations into stronger claims.

Ecuador’s record can be summarised more accurately by separating institutional facts from interpretations.
Confirmed or strongly documented

Unsupported or effectively unsubstantiated

- That a non-human base exists beneath the Pacific near Crucita.
- That disappearing lights demonstrate vehicles entering an underwater installation.
- That isolated luminous experiences establish intentional contact with non-human beings.
Some individual observations may have ordinary explanations, but few Ecuadorian cases have received sufficiently transparent technical analysis to be formally “debunked” one by one. The more accurate conclusion is that the extraordinary interpretations have not met their evidential burden.
The lasting significance of Ecuador’s UFO files
Ecuador is notable not because it produced conclusive alien evidence, but because a civilian campaign briefly pushed UFO reporting into the machinery of national defence policy. The 2007 release authorisation is a meaningful historical event: it acknowledges that unidentified observations existed in military channels and that there was public value in examining them.
The episode also demonstrates the limits of nominal disclosure. An order to release information is only the beginning. Without cataloguing, preservation, technical review and continued public access, “declassified files” can become a label attached to fragments whose provenance and completeness are uncertain.
The most defensible reading of Ecuador’s UFO history is therefore neither dismissal nor confirmation. Soldiers, aviators and civilians evidently reported unusual things in the country’s skies and coastal waters. Government figures took enough interest to authorise an investigation and seek records. But the publicly available evidence remains fragmented, heavily dependent on witness recollection and frequently amplified by later media.
