Why Are Kiribati UFO Reports So Rare?
Kiribati's tiny online case count reflects fragmented reporting and limited database coverage more than a proven absence of unusual sightings.

Introduction
Kiribati is one of the least documented countries in the world when it comes to reported unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) or UFO sightings. The small number of publicly accessible cases should not be interpreted as proof that unusual aerial observations never occur. Instead, the available evidence points to a significant reporting and archival gap. A combination of geographic isolation, a dispersed island population, limited media coverage, minimal digital record-keeping and the absence of a national investigation programme means that relatively few observations ever reach searchable databases.
For researchers, this distinction matters. An evidence gap is not the same as evidence of absence. The central question is therefore not why Kiribati has “no UFOs”, but why so little verifiable information survives, and what that means when assessing claims originating from the country.
What do current databases actually contain?
The publicly searchable record for Kiribati is exceptionally sparse compared with larger nations.
Several of the best-known international reporting systems contain either no confirmed Kiribati submissions or only isolated entries:
- Enigma Labs currently shows no publicly available submitted sightings from Kiribati, despite maintaining a global historical database compiled from numerous reporting sources.[Enigma Labs | Report a UFO sighting]enigmalabs.ioEnigma Labs | Report a UFO sighting UFO Sightings in Kiribati | Enigma LabsEnigma Labs | Report a UFO sighting UFO Sightings in Kiribati | Enigma Labs
- The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), one of the largest long-running civilian reporting archives, provides global country indexing but does not present a substantial Kiribati case history comparable with countries that have active reporting communities.[NUFORC]nuforc.orgData Bank | NUFORCData Bank | NUFORC - Latest UFO SightingsSeptember 6, 2021…
The practical consequence is that Kiribati rarely appears in international statistical analyses of UFO reports. This reflects the lack of available reports rather than any demonstrated absence of unusual observations.
Most references to Kiribati online ultimately revolve around only two widely discussed examples:
- the reported light observed on Tabiteuea in July 2019; and
- the viral Google Earth “crashed UFO” claim on Starbuck Island.[reddit.com]reddit.comCrashed UFO on Starbuck Island! Visible on Google Earth showing a massive trail behind the object indicating high velocity and grea…
Neither case constitutes verified evidence of an extraordinary craft, and together they illustrate how limited the country’s public evidence base remains.
Why geography makes reporting unusually difficult
Kiribati presents challenges unlike almost any other country.
Rather than consisting of one continuous landmass, the nation is spread across dozens of coral atolls and islands separated by enormous distances across the central Pacific. Many communities are extremely small and geographically isolated.
Several practical consequences follow:
- unusual observations may only be witnessed by one or two people;
- opportunities for multiple independent witnesses are comparatively limited;
- local events may never reach national media;
- historical records can be lost through changing communications infrastructure;
- many incidents may remain oral accounts rather than written reports.
Unlike countries with active amateur astronomy organisations, dedicated UFO reporting groups or national archival institutions preserving local newspapers, Kiribati has comparatively little infrastructure for preserving unusual local observations over decades.
This makes retrospective investigation particularly difficult. Even if an event were genuinely unusual, later researchers may find little beyond personal recollections.
Limited communications create an archival gap
The evidence gap is also shaped by how information leaves the islands.
Most international UFO databases depend on witnesses voluntarily submitting reports through websites or smartphone applications. Those systems naturally favour countries with widespread internet access, English-language participation and established reporting cultures.
Kiribati’s population is relatively small, internet access has historically been uneven across many outer islands, and witnesses may have little awareness that international reporting systems exist.
Consequently, the path from observation to searchable database contains numerous opportunities for information to disappear:
- the event is witnessed;
- it is discussed locally;
- no formal report is made;
- local discussion fades;
- researchers decades later find no surviving documentation.
The resulting dataset therefore reflects reporting behaviour as much as actual observations.
What the known cases demonstrate
The handful of recognised Kiribati cases illustrate different kinds of evidence limitations.
The Tabiteuea witness account
The July 2019 observation on Tabiteuea survives primarily because a witness later posted a detailed narrative online describing an apparently unusual moving light seen by two people.
Although the account provides useful contextual information—including the island, approximate date and observing circumstances—it lacks independent corroboration, photographs, instrument data, precise astronomical measurements or follow-up investigation. As a result, the event remains unidentified only because the available information is insufficient to determine what was observed, not because it demonstrates extraordinary technology.[Reddit]reddit.comPersonal witness of a UFO in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on an islandPersonal witness of a UFO in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on an islandMarch 20, 2020…
The Starbuck Island satellite image
The Starbuck Island claim followed a different path entirely.
Rather than beginning with an observed aerial phenomenon, it originated from satellite imagery circulated online showing an object interpreted by some viewers as a crashed flying saucer. The story spread rapidly through social media and entertainment websites before alternative explanations emerged, including the possibility that the object represented remnants of historical human activity associated with the island rather than an extraterrestrial craft. Online discussions also noted visible track-like features inconsistent with a high-speed impact.[weirdgoogleearth.com]weirdgoogleearth.comWeird Google Earth Crashed UFO in Kiribati?Weird Google EarthCrashed UFO in Kiribati? - Weird Google EarthSeptember 10, 2021…
The case demonstrates how viral imagery can rapidly become part of a country’s apparent UFO history despite lacking strong supporting evidence.
What missing records do—and do not—imply
The absence of documented cases should be interpreted cautiously.
It does not demonstrate:
- that unusual aerial observations never occur over Kiribati;
- that residents never report strange lights locally;
- that every historical observation has been preserved.
Likewise, it does not justify concluding that undocumented incidents were necessarily extraordinary.
Instead, the available evidence supports a more modest interpretation:
- publicly accessible reporting is extremely incomplete;
- surviving documentation is fragmented;
- the existing sample is too small for meaningful statistical conclusions;
- individual reports cannot easily be verified after the fact.
This distinction is important because countries with stronger reporting cultures routinely accumulate thousands of mundane reports alongside a handful of more puzzling ones. Kiribati lacks that large baseline dataset, making comparison unusually difficult.
How researchers should interpret the national evidence gap
For anyone studying UFO reports across different countries, Kiribati serves as a reminder that database size reflects more than the frequency of observations.
A country’s visible UFO record is influenced by several interacting factors:
- population size;
- internet connectivity;
- reporting culture;
- archival preservation;
- language barriers;
- media attention;
- institutional interest.
Kiribati scores relatively low on many of these variables, making under-reporting a plausible explanation for its sparse public record.
The country therefore represents an example of a “low-information environment” rather than a location where definitive conclusions about the frequency of unidentified aerial phenomena can be drawn.
The most evidence-supported conclusion
Current evidence does not support claims that Kiribati has experienced a hidden history of extraordinary UFO encounters, nor does it support the opposite claim that unusual sightings never occur there.
Instead, the strongest conclusion is methodological. Kiribati’s apparent scarcity of UFO reports is largely a product of fragmented documentation, limited reporting infrastructure and the practical difficulties of preserving observations across widely dispersed Pacific islands. The publicly available record remains too small and too uneven to support broad conclusions about the true frequency of unusual aerial sightings within the country.
