Why the report remains unidentified

Possible aircraft, satellite and optical explanations

Atmospheric refraction, thin cloud layers and turbulence can also produce sudden brightness changes or apparent motion when viewing distant lights from cruising altitude.

Human visual perception

Pilots are highly trained observers, but they remain subject to well-documented visual limitations.

At night, without nearby reference points, the human visual system struggles to estimate distance, speed and size. Small aircraft attitude changes, atmospheric scintillation and the aircraft’s own motion can all make distant point sources appear to shift dramatically. Aviation medicine has documented numerous visual illusions affecting experienced crews, particularly during night operations.

None of these mechanisms proves that this particular sighting was an illusion. They simply demonstrate why eyewitness testimony alone cannot determine an object’s true motion.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The incident is often overstated in two opposite directions.

One interpretation claims the pilot confirmed an unidentified craft performing extraordinary manoeuvres. The evidence does not support that conclusion. The radio transmission records only what the crew observed visually, not the object’s actual behaviour.

The opposite interpretation dismisses the report because “pilots make mistakes.” That is equally simplistic. Professional crews are generally reliable at recognising that something appears unusual enough to merit reporting, especially when they first seek routine operational explanations.

The most defensible assessment is narrower:

  • a trained airline crew observed an unusual distant light;
  • the observation was considered significant enough to contact air traffic control;
  • no immediate operational explanation was available;
  • the available evidence is insufficient to determine what produced the light.
