Introduction
When unusual lights are reported over So Tom and Prncipe, the most likely explanations are usually ordinary natural or human-made phenomena rather than evidence of unidentified craft. The country’s combination of exceptionally dark skies, an equatorial maritime climate, open ocean horizons and limited artificial lighting can make familiar objects appear brighter, more isolated and more mysterious than they would in heavily populated regions. At the same time, the absence of well-documented national UFO cases means there is little evidence that any recurring class of unexplained aerial phenomenon exists specifically over the islands. Instead, each reported light is best assessed by considering the local environment, weather conditions and known sources of illumination before turning to more extraordinary interpretations.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Stargazing from the ISSNASA ScienceStargazing from the ISS - NASA ScienceMay 16, 2016…
Aircraft, Satellites and Re-entering Space Debris
The most common explanations for isolated moving lights over So Tom are aircraft and satellites.
Although So Tom and Prncipe has a relatively small aviation sector, commercial flights, military overflights and aircraft crossing the Gulf of Guinea can all be visible from long distances, particularly after sunset. Seen over the sea, where there are few visual reference points, an aircraft approaching the observer may appear almost stationary before suddenly changing direction as its flight path becomes more obvious. Navigation lights can also seem unusually bright when viewed through humid tropical air.
Satellites are another frequent source of confusion. Bright satellites, especially the International Space Station (ISS), can cross the sky silently as steady white lights without flashing. Unlike aircraft, they usually maintain a constant speed and do not display coloured navigation lights. Because they reflect sunlight while the ground below is already dark, they are most visible shortly after sunset or before sunrise. A satellite may also appear to vanish abruptly when it enters Earth’s shadow, creating the impression that it has suddenly disappeared.[planetary.org]planetary.orgThe Planetary Society How to spot the ISS | The Planetary SocietyThe Planetary SocietyHow to spot the ISS | The Planetary SocietyJune 14, 2024…
Occasionally, re-entering space debris can produce dramatic displays. These events typically appear as bright objects fragmenting into multiple glowing pieces that travel together across the sky before fading. Such events are uncommon but are regularly mistaken for extraordinary aerial phenomena worldwide.
The increasing number of satellites in low Earth orbit also means that observers today are more likely to notice artificial objects than in previous decades, particularly under the dark skies found around remote oceanic islands.[DarkSky International]darksky.orgDark Sky International Our positions and statements | Dark Sky InternationalDark Sky International Our positions and statements | Dark Sky International
Weather, Meteors and Equatorial Lightning
So Tom and Prncipe’s tropical climate provides several natural mechanisms capable of producing striking lights.
Thunderstorms are common across the Gulf of Guinea. Lightning occurring inside distant cloud systems may illuminate entire cloud banks without an obvious visible lightning bolt. From many kilometres away, this can appear as repeated silent flashes on the horizon, particularly at night over open water. Astronaut photography over equatorial oceans frequently shows intense lightning illuminating extensive cloud systems, demonstrating how bright tropical storms can appear from great distances.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Stargazing from the ISSNASA ScienceStargazing from the ISS - NASA ScienceMay 16, 2016…
Meteor activity provides another straightforward explanation. Most meteors are visible for only a second or two, but exceptionally bright fireballs can:
- cast shadows,
- leave glowing trails,
- fragment into multiple pieces, or
- appear to change colour as they descend through the atmosphere.
Without nearby landmarks, a meteor over the Atlantic can seem farther away, slower or larger than it actually is.
Atmospheric conditions also play an important role. Warm, humid air above the ocean can scatter and refract light, making distant lights shimmer, change colour or appear to move irregularly. Temperature differences between layers of air may even create mild mirage effects that distort the apparent position of lights close to the horizon.
Fishing Lights, Birds, Balloons and Drones
The surrounding ocean creates several additional opportunities for misidentification.
Fishing vessels operating offshore commonly use powerful lamps during night fishing. Depending on atmospheric conditions, these lights may appear suspended above the horizon, particularly where the sea and sky merge in darkness. As vessels change course or become partially hidden by waves, the lights may seem to appear, disappear or drift unpredictably.
Large seabirds can also create brief visual illusions. A bird flying through the beam of a bright light, or reflecting moonlight while banking, may momentarily resemble a luminous object. Such observations are generally fleeting but can surprise observers unfamiliar with nocturnal seabird activity.
Weather balloons and recreational balloons are less common but remain possible explanations for isolated reports. When illuminated by the setting or rising Sun at high altitude, balloons can appear much brighter than expected while drifting slowly with upper-level winds.
Small drones have become another consideration in recent years. Their LED navigation lights may hover, change direction abruptly or remain apparently stationary relative to the ground. Around populated areas such as So Tom city, drones can easily be mistaken for unfamiliar aerial objects, particularly when viewed at night without depth cues.
Why the Islands Can Make Ordinary Lights Look Extraordinary
Several characteristics of So Tom and Prncipe naturally increase the chance of misidentifying ordinary lights.
The islands offer:
- Very dark skies, making faint satellites and distant aircraft easier to notice.
- Long ocean horizons, where there are few landmarks to judge distance or speed.
- High humidity, which scatters light and exaggerates brightness.
- Frequent tropical cloud systems, producing distant lightning and changing atmospheric conditions.
- Limited light pollution outside settlements, allowing subtle astronomical and atmospheric phenomena to stand out much more clearly than in urban environments.[DarkSky International]darksky.orgDark Sky International Our positions and statements | Dark Sky InternationalDark Sky International Our positions and statements | Dark Sky International
These conditions do not create unusual phenomena themselves, but they make familiar ones easier to misinterpret.
Applying These Explanations to So Tom and Prncipe
The available evidence does not indicate that So Tom and Prncipe experiences a distinctive pattern of unexplained aerial lights requiring an extraordinary explanation. Instead, the country’s sparse and poorly documented UFO record means there are few specific incidents that can be analysed in detail.
When an isolated report does emerge, investigators should first ask practical questions:
- Was a commercial aircraft or satellite passing overhead?
- Was there thunderstorm activity over the Gulf of Guinea?
- Could fishing vessels have been visible offshore?
- Did the object behave like a meteor, with a rapid, straight trajectory?
- Were drones or local light sources present?
Only after conventional explanations have been carefully examined should a sighting be regarded as genuinely unexplained. Given the current evidence from So Tom and Prncipe, ordinary atmospheric, astronomical and human-made sources remain the most plausible explanations for most reports of strange island lights.
