Introduction
Many reports of mysterious lights over North Macedonia have ultimately proved to be examples of familiar aerial or astronomical phenomena rather than evidence of unidentified craft. Since 2020 in particular, the rapid expansion of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation has created a new source of confusion, with long chains of evenly spaced satellites appearing unexpectedly over the country. Combined with ordinary aircraft, drones, bright planets and the limitations of smartphone cameras, these sightings explain a significant share of recent Macedonian UFO reports.
This does not mean that every reported light has been conclusively identified. Rather, it reflects the broader pattern seen in North Macedonia’s UFO record: many cases remain unresolved because the evidence is incomplete, while others closely match well-understood natural or human-made phenomena. Distinguishing between the two requires careful examination of timing, flight paths, astronomical conditions and the quality of the available images.
The confirmed Starlink sightings
The clearest documented example occurred during April 2020, when numerous people across North Macedonia reported an unusual line of bright lights travelling silently across the evening sky. The formation appeared unlike conventional aircraft, leading some observers to speculate about unidentified flying objects.
The mystery was quickly resolved by the Skopje Astronomical Society, which explained that the lights were recently launched SpaceX Starlink satellites travelling in their initial orbital formation. Because the satellites had not yet spread into their operational positions, they appeared as a bright “train” moving in a straight line with remarkably even spacing. The society noted that it had received numerous public enquiries about the phenomenon and published explanations alongside photographs and video of the pass.[slobodenpecat.mk]slobodenpecat.mkСлободен печатApril 19, 2020…
This event became an important reference point in North Macedonia because it demonstrated how unfamiliar space technology could rapidly generate UFO reports among observers who had never previously seen satellite trains. Municipal authorities even publicised later Starlink passes as noteworthy skywatching events, illustrating how quickly the phenomenon shifted from apparent mystery to recognised astronomical occurrence.[Слободен печат]slobodenpecat.mkСлободен печат…
The 2020 sightings also provide a useful chronological marker. Reports of linear formations after that date must consider Starlink as a primary hypothesis, whereas similar reports before the first operational launches require different explanations.
Aircraft, drones and astronomical lookalikes
Outside confirmed Starlink events, several other ordinary sources repeatedly appear in Macedonian sighting reports.
Aircraft can seem highly unusual when viewed head-on at night. Landing lights remain almost stationary for long periods while an aircraft is flying directly towards an observer, creating the illusion of hovering before suddenly changing direction as the aircraft turns or passes overhead. Multiple aircraft following the same arrival or departure route can also resemble a procession of coordinated lights.
Consumer drones have become another increasingly plausible explanation for low-altitude reports around Skopje and other populated areas. Modern drones can hover, climb vertically, change direction abruptly and display powerful navigation lights that appear red, white or green. Several local news reports discussing unusual lights have themselves suggested drones as the most likely explanation rather than unidentified craft.
Astronomical objects add another layer of confusion. Bright planets such as Venus are particularly deceptive because atmospheric turbulence near the horizon can make them appear to flicker in different colours, while changing cloud layers can create the illusion of motion. The Skopje Astronomical Society specifically highlighted Venus after receiving repeated enquiries from observers who mistook the planet for an extraordinary object. NASA’s skywatching guidance likewise identifies Venus as one of the world’s most frequently misidentified “UFOs”.[Слободен печат]slobodenpecat.mkСлободен печатApril 19, 2020…
These explanations do not account for every Macedonian report, but they fit recurring patterns seen in local descriptions:
- evenly spaced lights moving together are consistent with recently launched Starlink satellites;
- bright stationary lights near airports often match approaching aircraft;
- low, manoeuvrable coloured lights are frequently compatible with drones;
- exceptionally bright “hovering” lights low in the western sky often correspond to Venus or other bright planets.
How cameras distort distant lights
Many of the most dramatic Macedonian UFO videos share a common limitation: they were recorded on smartphones using heavy digital zoom under poor lighting conditions.
Consumer phone cameras are designed primarily for daylight photography. At night they struggle to maintain focus on distant point sources such as stars, aircraft lights or planets. Instead of recording a sharp light, the camera produces an enlarged glowing disc that may pulse, shimmer or display changing colours because of autofocus adjustments, atmospheric turbulence and digital image processing.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Identifying UFOs and UAPsNASA ScienceIdentifying UFOs and UAPs - NASA Science…
Digital zoom introduces additional artefacts. As the image is enlarged, tiny movements of the photographer’s hands become exaggerated, making an essentially stationary light appear to dart around the frame. Compression algorithms can also create changing patterns within the bright object, giving the impression of structured energy, rotating shapes or multiple colours where none exist.
These effects are especially relevant to several online videos from North Macedonia in which distant lights become large, colourful “orbs” only after substantial zoom is applied. Such footage may accurately record that a bright light was present while simultaneously misrepresenting its true appearance.
Why Starlink changed UFO reporting
Before 2019, long formations of evenly spaced moving lights were relatively uncommon. Starlink introduced a completely new visual phenomenon visible to the naked eye across Europe, including North Macedonia.
Freshly launched satellites remain grouped together for days or weeks before gradually spreading into separate orbital positions. During this period they often resemble a silent convoy travelling across the sky. Because they reflect sunlight while the ground below is already dark, they can appear unexpectedly bright despite being hundreds of kilometres above Earth. Their appearance also changes with orbital geometry and solar illumination, meaning some passes are spectacular while others are almost invisible. Recent technical studies have shown that changing reflection angles can even produce unusually bright flares capable of confusing experienced observers and pilots.[arXiv]arxiv.orgEnhancing Space Situational Awareness to Mitigate Risk: A Single-Case Study in the Misidentification of a Recently-Launched Starlink…
The Macedonian experience mirrors a broader international trend in which satellite trains rapidly became one of the most common explanations for reports of coordinated lights after 2020.
Assessing future reports in North Macedonia
The strongest investigations of unusual lights combine multiple independent sources of evidence rather than relying on a single video.
Useful questions include:
- Was a Starlink train predicted over North Macedonia at that exact time?
- Were commercial aircraft operating along the same line of sight?
- Was the object observed by multiple independent witnesses from different locations?
- Did the appearance remain consistent without heavy digital zoom?
- Do astronomical conditions place Venus, Jupiter or another bright object in the reported direction?
Cases supported only by low-resolution mobile-phone footage generally remain difficult to interpret. By contrast, reports that include precise times, locations, multiple witnesses and independent observational data are far easier to investigate.
Within North Macedonia’s wider UFO record, the best-supported conclusion is that a substantial proportion of reports involving unusual lights can be explained by satellite trains, conventional aircraft, drones, bright astronomical objects or the behaviour of modern digital cameras. The confirmed Starlink observations of 2020 illustrate how unfamiliar but entirely ordinary technology can rapidly become the source of convincing UFO reports until its true nature is understood.
