Introduction
The Mers-el-Kebir case is one of the better-known Algerian UFO reports from the 1950s, but it is also one of the weakest in terms of contemporary evidence. The event is known primarily from a witness who reconstructed a childhood sighting nearly six decades after it allegedly occurred. Rather than representing a dispute between believers and sceptics over extraordinary evidence, the Mers-el-Kebir debate illustrates a more common investigative problem: how an impressive natural event, viewed under uncertain conditions and remembered decades later, can remain permanently unresolved.
The Family’s Reconstructed Account
According to the testimony submitted to GEIPAN in 2012, the witness recalled an observation made as a teenager during July or August 1954 in Sainte-Clotilde, near Mers-el-Kebir outside Oran. Family members were reportedly sitting outdoors when they noticed a brilliant orange, fire-like disc descending towards the sea. The object appeared to follow a downward path before stopping above the horizon, remaining motionless briefly and then accelerating upward at roughly a 45-degree angle towards the east before disappearing. The report contains several important uncertainties that shaped the later investigation:
- the exact date was unknown;

- no independent witness statements were collected decades later;

These gaps meant investigators had to reconstruct the event retrospectively rather than analyse evidence recorded close to the time of the observation.
How a Fireball Could Mimic the Motion
GEIPAN did not dismiss the account outright. Instead, investigators examined whether a bright meteor—often called a fireball or bolide—could reproduce much of what the family described.
Bright fireballs can appear exceptionally dramatic. Depending on viewing angle, atmospheric conditions and observer perspective, they may seem much larger than stars or planets and can display vivid orange, red or yellow colours. When travelling almost directly towards or away from an observer, their apparent motion across the sky can also seem surprisingly slow despite their enormous true velocity.
The descending portion of the Mers-el-Kebir description matches this type of event reasonably well. GEIPAN noted that a newspaper report from Le Provençal described a brilliant bolide observed from southern France on 22 August 1954 around 20:00. The hypothesis becomes less satisfactory when addressing the reported halt and rapid upward departure. A meteor cannot physically stop in mid-air and reverse direction.
However, investigators pointed to another possibility: the second phase may have resulted from normal visual physiology rather than the external object itself.
Why the Apparent Reversal Matters
The most unusual feature of the account is not the glowing disc but its apparent change of direction.
Looking at an intensely bright object can produce after-images that remain briefly on the retina. If an observer shifts their gaze immediately afterwards, the lingering after-image may appear to move independently of the original source. Combined with eye movements, changing attention and the absence of fixed visual references over the sea, this can create a convincing impression that the object itself has altered course.

This distinction is important. The investigators did not claim that an after-image definitely occurred. Rather, they argued that it represented a credible explanation for the apparent reversal without requiring an unusual aerial object.
Why the Official Review Stayed Inconclusive
Despite favouring a meteor-based interpretation, GEIPAN did not classify the case as an identified natural phenomenon.

Several factors prevented a firmer conclusion:
- No precise observation date. Without an exact day, astronomical records and contemporary reports cannot be matched confidently.
- Long reporting delay. The testimony was recorded approximately fifty-eight years after the alleged event, increasing the possibility of altered or reconstructed memory.
- Single surviving testimony. Investigators were unable to compare multiple independent witness accounts.
- No physical or instrumental evidence. There were no photographs, official records or contemporaneous documents confirming the event.

What the Debate Shows About UFO Investigations in Algeria
Within Algeria’s relatively small historical UFO record, the Mers-el-Kebir case occupies an instructive middle ground. It is neither a straightforward misidentification nor compelling evidence for an extraordinary craft.
Instead, it demonstrates how several ordinary sources of uncertainty can accumulate:
- a spectacular natural event;
- observation under evening conditions over the sea;
- imperfect estimation of distance and motion;
- possible visual after-effects from an intensely bright light;
- testimony reconstructed many decades later.
Unlike Algeria’s 1952 Project Blue Book reports, which survive as contemporary government documents, the Mers-el-Kebir case depends almost entirely on retrospective recollection. The available evidence neither confirms an anomalous aerial object nor conclusively proves a meteor.
The strongest evidence supports a scenario in which the family witnessed a bright fireball whose initial descent resembled the reported luminous disc, while the apparent stationary phase and upward movement may have resulted from perceptual effects or memory reconstruction. Because the essential details cannot now be checked independently, the official investigation deliberately stopped short of identifying the event with certainty.
For that reason, the Mers-el-Kebir report remains noteworthy less because it is unexplained than because it illustrates the limits of retrospective UFO investigation.
