The Dominican Republic’s reputation as a UFO hotspot rests largely on a cluster of stories from the early and mid-1970s. These accounts remain influential in local UFO literature because they involve named witnesses, dramatic close encounters and recurring locations along the south-eastern coast, particularly between Santo Domingo, La Caleta and Boca Chica. Yet when these cases are revisited using modern historical standards, a different picture emerges. The incidents are not easily dismissed as inventions, but neither do they meet the evidential threshold required to establish extraordinary claims. Most survive only through later retellings, incomplete investigative notes and secondary publications rather than contemporaneous records.
This makes the 1970s wave important for understanding Dominican UFO history, not because it conclusively demonstrates anomalous phenomena, but because it illustrates how a national UFO tradition can be built from memorable testimony despite the gradual loss of primary evidence.

The 1972 Boca Chica Road Incident
The best-known Dominican UFO case is generally dated to September 1972 on the coastal road between San Pedro de Macorís and Boca Chica.
According to the most frequently repeated account, writer and politician Tony Raful was driving with lawyer José Florentino Sánchez and another companion while returning from La Romana. During an evening discussion about UFOs, they reportedly observed a luminous object near the roadside. Several aspects distinguish the case from anonymous folklore:

What survives—and what does not
No publicly available archive currently includes:
- a contemporaneous police report;

- photographs;
- radar observations;
- military documentation;

This distinction matters historically. Consequently, the Boca Chica incident is best classified as an unresolved historical testimony rather than a documented anomalous event.
La Caleta and other close encounters
If Boca Chica supplied the Dominican Republic’s signature road encounter, La Caleta became associated with a series of reports involving low-flying luminous objects near the coast.
One frequently cited account dates from 1974. The father of journalist and diplomat Víctor Grimaldi reportedly observed an unusual object descending near La Caleta, close to Las Américas Airport. Believing it might have landed, he and a neighbour entered nearby vegetation to investigate after seeing a distant glow. The geographical setting contributed to the story’s longevity:
- the coastline provides wide views over the Caribbean;
- the nearby airport naturally places aircraft lights within the visual environment;

Again, however, no publicly accessible contemporary investigation survives.
The broader pattern
Other reports from roughly the same era describe:
- luminous objects over coastal waters;
- close-range lights apparently descending;
- temporary vehicle malfunctions;
- unusual silence;
- witnesses attempting to approach suspected landing sites.
Some later catalogues extend this pattern into the latter half of the decade, including accounts published in international UFO newsletters. Why the original evidence matters
The central problem facing modern researchers is not necessarily that the witnesses lacked credibility. It is that almost every avenue for independent verification has disappeared.
A modern investigation would ideally compare witness testimony against:
- weather records;

- air traffic data;
- maintenance reports;
- police logs;
- radar information;
- photographs or physical traces.
For the classic Dominican cases, little of this material is publicly available today.
That absence creates an important distinction between unexplained and unexplainable. The events remain unexplained largely because the evidence needed for evaluation no longer exists or has never been publicly located, not because investigators have demonstrated impossible flight characteristics or confirmed non-human technology.
This is particularly significant because many later UFO investigations elsewhere have successfully resolved historical reports once flight records, astronomical data or satellite information became available. Comparable re-examination has generally not been possible for the Dominican cases.
How reliable are the surviving accounts?
Viewed through contemporary historical standards, the principal 1970s Dominican reports fall into three broad categories.

What the 1970s wave tells us today
The classic Dominican UFO wave remains important because it shaped the country’s UFO identity far more than because it established extraordinary evidence.
Its best-known cases introduced recurring themes—coastal roads, luminous objects, vehicle interference and attempted close approaches—that continued to influence later Dominican UFO reporting. They also demonstrate how local traditions can persist through newspapers, private archives and oral history even when official investigative records are scarce.
Revisited today, the strongest conclusion is a restrained one. The 1970s produced several memorable reports that deserve preservation as part of the Dominican Republic’s cultural and investigative history. Yet the surviving evidence is too fragmentary to confirm the dramatic interpretations often attached to them. The cases remain historically significant precisely because they occupy the difficult space between credible testimony and insufficient documentation—a position that has kept them unresolved for more than half a century.
