Introduction
Reports of unusual lights over the Atlantic from Dakar are among the most common modern UFO-style claims associated with Senegal, yet they are also among the hardest to evaluate. Unlike a close-range encounter with multiple independent witnesses, distant lights above the ocean often provide almost no reliable information about distance, altitude or speed. A bright point of light on the sea horizon can appear stationary, accelerate unexpectedly, split into multiple lights or change colour simply because the observer lacks reference points or because atmospheric conditions distort what is actually being seen. Recent social-media videos from Dakar illustrate this problem well: they generate genuine curiosity but rarely include the location data, timestamps, compass bearings or corroborating observations needed to distinguish an unusual event from ships, aircraft or atmospheric effects.[reddit.com]reddit.comOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarApril 23, 2025…
Within the broader record of Senegalese UFO reports, these coastal sightings are therefore better understood as a population of difficult-to-classify observations rather than as evidence for a specific unexplained phenomenon. Their value lies in demonstrating how modern smartphones can record striking imagery while still leaving the key questions unanswered.
Why Dakar’s Atlantic horizon creates so much ambiguity
Dakar occupies a peninsula projecting into the Atlantic Ocean, giving observers long, unobstructed views across open water. At night this creates ideal conditions for visual ambiguity.
Unlike lights seen over land, lights above the ocean usually lack nearby landmarks that help the eye judge distance and height. A vessel many kilometres offshore, an aircraft flying directly towards the observer or a bright celestial object near the horizon may all appear to occupy the same part of the sky. Smartphone cameras worsen the problem because digital zoom compresses perspective and amplifies small movements caused by hand-held recording.
The Atlantic environment also introduces meteorological effects that are especially relevant to West Africa. Variations in temperature and humidity above the sea can produce unusual atmospheric refraction. Studies using Dakar radiosonde data show that super-refraction and ducting conditions occur regularly, particularly during night-time and early morning periods. These conditions are well known for bending electromagnetic waves and can also contribute to distorted visual impressions close to the horizon.[ScienceDirect]sciencedirect.comScienceDirect Climatology of radar anomalous propagation over West AfricaClimatology of radar anomalous propagation over West Africa - ScienceDirect…
This does not mean that every unusual light is explained by atmospheric optics. Rather, it means that the local environment naturally produces conditions in which ordinary objects can appear highly unusual unless additional evidence is available.
Ships, aircraft and atmospheric effects
Most modern reports from Dakar’s coastline involve small groups of bright lights apparently hovering above the sea. Several ordinary mechanisms deserve consideration before any extraordinary interpretation.
Ships on the horizon. Commercial traffic approaches and departs Dakar’s port throughout the day and night. Vessel navigation lights can remain apparently stationary for long periods when a ship is travelling almost directly towards or away from the observer. Changes in atmospheric clarity or wave motion may make the lights brighten, fade or appear to separate.
Aircraft. Dakar lies beneath busy regional and international air routes, while aircraft also operate within Dakar’s oceanic flight information region. Aircraft approaching from over the Atlantic frequently present intense landing lights directly towards observers, creating the impression of hovering luminous objects until the aircraft changes heading.[Asecna AIM]aim.asecna.aeroAsecna AIMAIP ASECNA (section ENR-1.8) valide à partir du 15 AUG 2019August 15, 2019…
Atmospheric distortion. Refraction near the horizon can stretch, compress or displace lights. Multiple layers of warm and cool air over the ocean may produce shimmering, colour changes or apparent vertical movement. Such effects become more convincing when viewed through smartphone zoom or low-light image processing.[ScienceDirect]sciencedirect.comScienceDirect Climatology of radar anomalous propagation over West AfricaClimatology of radar anomalous propagation over West Africa - ScienceDirect…
Astronomical objects. Bright planets close to the horizon often twinkle dramatically because their light passes through a thicker layer of atmosphere. Combined with camera autofocus and digital stabilisation, this can produce recordings in which a stationary object appears to pulse, rotate or change colour.[AARO]aaro.milAARO Home…
None of these explanations automatically resolves an individual sighting. They simply represent the ordinary phenomena that investigators would attempt to eliminate first.
The 2025 Dakar coastal video as a case study
A widely shared April 2025 social-media post showed multiple bright lights over the Atlantic near Dakar. The witness described several luminous objects, including one apparently moving between larger lights, while nearby observers reportedly stopped to watch.[Reddit]reddit.comOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarApril 23, 2025…
The video attracted immediate speculation ranging from unidentified aerial phenomena to conventional maritime traffic. Several viewers suggested that the lights matched distant ships positioned along the horizon, while others argued that the available footage was too limited to determine their true nature. No publicly available follow-up investigation established precise camera coordinates, verified the recording metadata, compared the timing with Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel tracks or matched the observations against aircraft movements.[Reddit]reddit.comOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarOrbs Spotted over Ocean in DakarApril 23, 2025…
Consequently, the case remains unclassified rather than unexplained. The available evidence is insufficient to distinguish confidently between multiple ordinary possibilities. This is a recurring pattern in modern Senegalese coastal reports: the recordings are visually interesting but lack the contextual data needed for reliable analysis.
How modern sightings can actually be tested
The greatest weakness of many coastal UFO videos is not poor image quality but missing contextual information. A bright light recorded without location or timing is often impossible to reconstruct later.
Useful evidence would include:
- precise GPS coordinates or an identifiable filming location;
- the exact local time and date;
- the compass direction of the camera;
- continuous, unedited footage rather than short clips;
- independent recordings from other observers;
- comparisons with vessel tracking, flight tracking and local weather conditions.
If several observers filmed the same lights from different locations, investigators could estimate altitude and distance through triangulation. If ship and aircraft databases eliminated ordinary traffic at the relevant bearing, the remaining possibilities would become much narrower. Without these steps, visual impressions alone rarely provide enough information to reach a robust conclusion.
What these reports mean for Senegal’s UFO record
Modern coastal-light reports should be interpreted differently from Senegal’s better-known historical incidents, such as the 1952 Dakar observation or the 1980 Baridiame event. Those cases concern individual historical episodes with limited surviving documentation. By contrast, the Dakar coastal-light phenomenon represents an ongoing category of observations generated by a complex maritime environment rather than a single event.
The current evidence does not demonstrate a recurring unidentified aerial phenomenon unique to Dakar. Instead, it shows that the city’s geography creates ideal conditions for ambiguous observations, especially when recordings lack the supporting information needed for reconstruction. As smartphone cameras become more common, reports may increase in number without necessarily improving in evidential quality.
For researchers examining Senegal’s broader UFO history, Dakar’s coastal lights therefore serve primarily as a reminder that modern visual evidence is not automatically stronger than historical testimony. Without careful documentation and independent verification, even high-definition video can remain fundamentally inconclusive.
