According to a report published in Le Républicain Lorrain, a resident returning home at around 11:20 pm observed an orange, round or oval luminous object approaching to what he estimated was approximately 100 metres away. He reported that a smaller glowing object separated from the larger one, emitted an intense light, later rejoined it, and that both departed rapidly towards the west. Several factors make this one of Luxembourg’s most frequently cited UFO reports:
- it appeared in a contemporary newspaper rather than only later UFO compilations;
- it included a specific time, location and witness description;
- the account was preserved by later archival researchers.
At the same time, the limitations are equally clear. The report relies on a single eyewitness, contains no photographs, radar evidence or physical traces, and no publicly available official investigation is known.
Autumn 1980: A cluster of reports
The months following the Cents incident saw a noticeable increase in reported observations preserved in CLEU publications.
Among the cases documented were reports of:
- zig-zagging white lights above Limpertsberg;
- red-orange cigar-shaped luminous objects over Luxembourg City;
- silent coloured objects reported near Bergem;

These reports form the closest thing Luxembourg has to a national “wave” of UFO activity. However, they remain primarily collections of witness testimony rather than independently corroborated incidents. Many were investigated by civilian researchers rather than public authorities.
October 1980: The Luxembourg City object
Another widely cited newspaper report appeared in October 1980.
Witnesses near the Luxembourg City fairgrounds described seeing a bright rectangular or elongated reddish object during dusk. According to the newspaper account, numerous observers watched the object for roughly a minute before it changed apparent shape and moved away toward the capital. Following the concentration of reports around 1980, Luxembourg’s documented UFO history becomes noticeably quieter.

Assessing the strongest cases

The 1980 Cents observation remains the country’s strongest documented single incident because it has a contemporary source, a detailed witness description and a reasonably precise chronology. The cluster of autumn 1980 reports demonstrates that public interest was genuine and widespread enough to sustain repeated investigations by CLEU.
However, none of these events produced the kind of independent corroboration—multiple verified witnesses with matching testimony, sensor data, physical evidence or official technical analysis—that would distinguish them from the large body of unresolved aerial observations reported worldwide.
