Introduction

Chile has produced some of the most frequently cited UFO cases outside the United States, yet several of its best-known incidents also illustrate how explanations can evolve as better evidence, improved image analysis and independent investigators revisit the original material. Rather than showing a steady accumulation of stronger proof, Chile’s major cases demonstrate a recurring pattern: dramatic initial reports, official investigation, competing interpretations and, in some instances, later conventional explanations that are more persuasive than the first assessments. Others remain officially unresolved, not because an extraordinary origin has been demonstrated, but because the available evidence does not permit a confident identification.

This pattern is especially clear in three influential examples: the 1997 Arica sightings that helped prompt Chile’s modern official investigation programme, the El Bosque air base footage that shifted from apparent high-speed object to probable nearby insect, and the widely discussed Chilean naval infrared video whose status remains disputed despite substantial later reanalysis.

Why famous Chilean cases often changed over time

Chile’s official investigators have consistently approached reports as aviation safety questions rather than proof of extraterrestrial visitors. Since the creation of the Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA) in 1997—now reorganised as the Section for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (SEFAA)—cases have been examined using radar information, flight records, meteorological data, astronomical checks and image analysis.[SEFAA]sefaa.dgac.gob.clSEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAASEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAA

What has changed most over the past two decades is not necessarily the sightings themselves but the analytical tools available to assess them. Modern digital image processing, access to historical flight data, higher-quality satellite information and collaborative online investigation have allowed some celebrated cases to be re-examined long after they entered UFO literature.

The result is a mixed record:

  • some reports remain genuinely unidentified because evidence is incomplete;
  • some have acquired increasingly persuasive conventional explanations;
  • a few continue to divide investigators because the available evidence supports multiple interpretations.

Understanding that distinction is essential when evaluating Chile’s most famous incidents.

Arica’s 1997 lights and the limits of the archive

The series of reports around Arica during March and April 1997 occupies an important place in Chilean UFO history because it directly influenced the creation of CEFAA later that year.

Witnesses reportedly included members of the public, airport personnel and air traffic controllers near Chacalluta Airport. The concentration of reports convinced aviation authorities that an organised investigative body was needed to evaluate unusual aerial events systematically rather than leaving them to newspapers or informal speculation.[SEFAA]sefaa.dgac.gob.clSEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAASEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAA

Yet the Arica wave also illustrates an important limitation.

Unlike later cases involving digital video or infrared sensors, much of the surviving evidence consists of witness testimony and official summaries rather than complete technical datasets. Contemporary reports describe unusual lights seen over several nights, but relatively little primary material has been released that allows independent reconstruction of individual observations.

Consequently, several possibilities remain difficult to distinguish with confidence:

  • astronomical objects viewed under unusual atmospheric conditions;
  • conventional aircraft observed at uncertain distances;
  • multiple unrelated events grouped together by media coverage;
  • genuinely unidentified observations lacking enough data for resolution.

The historical importance of the Arica incidents therefore lies less in proving an extraordinary phenomenon than in triggering Chile’s modern official investigative framework.

El Bosque footage and the insect hypothesis

One of Chile’s best-known video cases emerged from footage recorded during an air force ceremony at El Bosque Air Base in 2010.

Reviewing the video frame by frame, some investigators initially argued that a dark object crossed the flight path of military aircraft at extraordinary speed. Early presentations associated with CEFAA suggested the object appeared solid and difficult to explain, leading the footage to circulate internationally as one of Chile’s strongest UFO videos.[RR0]rr0.orgLe film d'El BosqueLe film d'El BosqueMay 4, 2025…Published: May 4, 2025

However, subsequent independent analyses produced a very different interpretation.

Detailed geometric examination showed the object apparently rising from near ground level in front of distant hills before crossing the camera’s field of view. Rather than travelling alongside the aircraft, it behaved consistently with a small nearby object moving close to the camera lens.

The leading conventional explanation became that the “UFO” was most likely:

  • an insect flying close to the camera;
  • possibly only a few metres—or even less—from the videographer;
  • appearing extremely fast because of perspective and the large distance to the aircraft in the background.[Live Science]livescience.comLive Science10 Paranormal Videos Debunked | Live ScienceApril 27, 2011…Published: April 27, 2011

Although not everyone accepted this conclusion, the insect hypothesis substantially reduced the case’s evidential value. It became an important example of how apparent high-speed motion in video can result from perspective rather than extraordinary flight characteristics.

The Chilean naval infrared video and the continuing debate

The most famous modern Chilean UFO case remains the naval helicopter infrared recording made during a coastal patrol in November 2014.

The helicopter crew tracked an object for more than nine minutes using a WESCAM FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera. Investigators were particularly interested in two apparent thermal plumes emitted during the recording. After roughly two years of study, CEFAA announced that it had been unable to identify the object and publicly released the footage in 2017.[Ars Technica]arstechnica.comArs TechnicaChilean officials can’t identify a strange IR signal seen by its Navy - Ars TechnicaJanuary 6, 2017…Published: January 6, 2017

At the time, the official conclusion attracted international attention because it came from a government aviation body rather than a private UFO organisation.

Why later investigators challenged the original conclusion

The official release did not end the discussion.

Independent analysts later reconstructed aircraft movements using historical flight records and argued that the object closely matched a commercial airliner approaching Santiago.

The most widely discussed reconstruction proposed that the target corresponded to a scheduled passenger flight seen at long distance through atmospheric haze, while the apparent “plumes” were ordinary engine exhaust or condensation rendered unusually bright by the infrared imaging system.[AECH]aech.clexplicado video del ovni de la armada corresponderia al vuelo ib6830EXPLICADO: Video del OVNI de la Armada correspondería al vuelo IB6830 – Escépticos CL (AECH)January 22, 2017…Published: January 22, 2017

Supporters of the conventional explanation argue that it accounts for:

  • the apparent constant speed;
  • the object’s trajectory;
  • the changing infrared appearance;
  • the lack of unusual manoeuvres.

Critics respond that uncertainties remain regarding precise timing, aircraft identification and some features of the infrared signature, arguing that the airliner explanation does not resolve every aspect of the recording.[The UFO Database]theufodatabase.comThe UFO Database Chilean Navy UFO Video | The UFO DatabaseThe UFO Database Chilean Navy UFO Video | The UFO Database

Unlike the El Bosque case, no single explanation has achieved universal acceptance.

The more accurate description today is that the official classification remains “unidentified”, while the strongest conventional interpretation has become considerably more detailed than was available when the video was first released.

What these cases reveal about changing explanations

Taken together, these three incidents illustrate different stages in the life cycle of prominent UFO reports.

CaseInitial impressionLater assessmentArica 1997Numerous unexplained lights reported by multiple witnessesHistorically significant, but limited surviving evidence prevents firm conclusions.[SEFAA]sefaa.dgac.gob.clSEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAASEFAAQuiénes somos – SEFAA Bosque 2010Apparently extraordinary object crossing military aircraftLater perspective analysis strongly favoured a nearby insect rather than a distant craft.[Live Science]livescience.comLive Science10 Paranormal Videos Debunked | Live ScienceApril 27, 2011…Published: April 27, 2011 infrared 2014Officially unidentified after lengthy investigationStill debated; later reanalysis suggests a distant commercial aircraft, though not all investigators agree.[aech.cl]aech.clexplicado video del ovni de la armada corresponderia al vuelo ib6830EXPLICADO: Video del OVNI de la Armada correspondería al vuelo IB6830 – Escépticos CL (AECH)January 22, 2017…Published: January 22, 2017

The overall trend is not that Chile’s famous cases have all been solved, nor that they have all remained mysterious. Instead, they show that the strongest UFO investigations are often provisional. As new analytical techniques emerge and more contextual information becomes available, explanations can strengthen, weaken or change entirely.

For readers assessing Chile’s UFO record, that evolution is arguably the most important lesson. The country’s best-known cases are valuable not because they establish extraordinary phenomena, but because they demonstrate how careful investigation can move reports along a spectrum from unexplained, to disputed, to sometimes convincingly explained without requiring sensational conclusions.
