Chile’s official investigators have consistently approached reports as aviation safety questions rather than proof of extraterrestrial visitors. The series of reports around Arica during March and April 1997 occupies an important place in Chilean UFO history because it directly influenced the creation of CEFAA later that year.
Witnesses reportedly included members of the public, airport personnel and air traffic controllers near Chacalluta Airport. Yet the Arica wave also illustrates an important limitation.
Unlike later cases involving digital video or infrared sensors, much of the surviving evidence consists of witness testimony and official summaries rather than complete technical datasets. Contemporary reports describe unusual lights seen over several nights, but relatively little primary material has been released that allows independent reconstruction of individual observations.
Consequently, several possibilities remain difficult to distinguish with confidence:
- astronomical objects viewed under unusual atmospheric conditions;
- conventional aircraft observed at uncertain distances;
- multiple unrelated events grouped together by media coverage;
- genuinely unidentified observations lacking enough data for resolution.

El Bosque footage and the insect hypothesis
One of Chile’s best-known video cases emerged from footage recorded during an air force ceremony at El Bosque Air Base in 2010.
Reviewing the video frame by frame, some investigators initially argued that a dark object crossed the flight path of military aircraft at extraordinary speed. - an insect flying close to the camera;
- possibly only a few metres—or even less—from the videographer;

Although not everyone accepted this conclusion, the insect hypothesis substantially reduced the case’s evidential value. It became an important example of how apparent high-speed motion in video can result from perspective rather than extraordinary flight characteristics.
The Chilean naval infrared video and the continuing debate
The most famous modern Chilean UFO case remains the naval helicopter infrared recording made during a coastal patrol in November 2014.
The helicopter crew tracked an object for more than nine minutes using a WESCAM FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera. Investigators were particularly interested in two apparent thermal plumes emitted during the recording. At the time, the official conclusion attracted international attention because it came from a government aviation body rather than a private UFO organisation.
Why later investigators challenged the original conclusion
The official release did not end the discussion.
Independent analysts later reconstructed aircraft movements using historical flight records and argued that the object closely matched a commercial airliner approaching Santiago.

Supporters of the conventional explanation argue that it accounts for:
- the apparent constant speed;
- the object’s trajectory;
- the changing infrared appearance;
- the lack of unusual manoeuvres.

Unlike the El Bosque case, no single explanation has achieved universal acceptance.
The more accurate description today is that the official classification remains “unidentified”, while the strongest conventional interpretation has become considerably more detailed than was available when the video was first released.

The overall trend is not that Chile’s famous cases have all been solved, nor that they have all remained mysterious. Instead, they show that the strongest UFO investigations are often provisional.
