Two cases dominate nearly every historical survey: an unusual luminous event near Maracaibo in 1886 and a brief pilot report near Anaco in January 1953. The 1886 incident entered the record as an account of an unexplained electrical or meteorological occurrence rather than a spacecraft sighting, while the 1953 report survives only as a short catalogue entry in an American UFO compilation later released through CIA archives. The 1886 Maracaibo luminous incident
The earliest Venezuelan episode frequently incorporated into UFO chronologies occurred on the night of 24 October 1886, a few leagues from Maracaibo. Its importance rests not on any contemporary claim of an extraterrestrial craft but on the fact that the account appeared in a respected scientific periodical.
A letter sent by Warner Cowgill of the United States Consulate in Maracaibo was published in Scientific American on 18 December 1886 under the title “Curious Phenomenon in Venezuela”. Cowgill described reports from a family of nine who, during a storm, were awakened by a loud humming sound and an intense light that illuminated the inside of their hut. According to the letter, the occupants experienced immediate vomiting and swelling of the face and upper body. The report also claimed that dark marks later appeared on the skin, sores developed after several days, and nearby trees subsequently withered. Why historians treat the case cautiously
The Maracaibo report is historically valuable because it is contemporary and independently published, but its evidential limitations are equally significant.
Only one surviving narrative is known, based on Cowgill’s correspondence rather than a technical investigation. No physical samples, medical records, photographs or independent witness interviews survive. Modern interpretations therefore depend almost entirely on a single published description.
Natural explanations have been suggested over the years. The brief 1953 Anaco pilot report
The next Venezuelan case commonly cited before the famous 1954 reports comes from 28 January 1953 near Anaco in eastern Venezuela.
Unlike the Maracaibo incident, this was presented from the outset as an aerial observation. However, almost everything known about it derives from a remarkably brief entry in UFO Evidence, the influential 1964 catalogue produced by the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). According to the catalogue, a pilot reported seeing a round or grey object near Anaco. Beyond the date, location and basic description, almost no operational details survive. How later retellings changed their meaning
An important feature of both early Venezuelan reports is that neither originally occupied the role they later acquired.
The 1886 account began as a description of a strange electrical occurrence. Only decades later, after the term “flying saucer” had entered public culture, was it absorbed into UFO catalogues as a historical precursor. What these early reports contribute to Venezuela’s UFO history
Although neither case provides compelling evidence of an extraordinary craft, both are historically significant.
The Maracaibo incident demonstrates that unusual luminous phenomena in Venezuela were being documented in international scientific correspondence as early as the nineteenth century. The Anaco report shows that Venezuelan aerial sightings had entered the post-war international UFO reporting network before the country’s much larger cluster of reports in 1954.
Taken together, these two episodes form the documented prelude to Venezuela’s later UFO history. They reveal less about unidentified aerial phenomena themselves than about the evolution of interpretation: an unexplained nineteenth-century electrical event became recast as an early UFO encounter, while a minimally documented pilot observation acquired lasting prominence through repeated citation in influential catalogues.
