Why fragmentation points to a fireball

The reported break-up is the strongest piece of evidence supporting a meteor explanation.

A fireball is an exceptionally bright meteor produced when a relatively large meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere at tremendous speed. As aerodynamic pressure and heating increase, the object often fractures into multiple glowing pieces. Why the event entered UFO catalogues

The Kampala fireball nevertheless appears in numerous UFO compilations. This can seem contradictory until the terminology is understood.

A UFO simply refers to an object that is unidentified at the time of observation. It does not imply extraterrestrial origin or that the object remained unexplained after investigation.

In the Kampala case, witnesses initially did not know what they had seen. Because of that initial uncertainty, UFO publications collected the report alongside other unexplained aerial sightings. Later summaries preserved the incident largely because it represented an interesting historical sighting rather than because it remained mysterious. How convincing is the meteor explanation?

  • Contemporary reporting. The surviving account was published only days after the event rather than being reconstructed decades later.
