Is Skopje Really North Macedonia's UFO Hotspot?
Population, air traffic, cameras and complex terrain may explain why Skopje dominates the national sighting record.

Introduction
Skopje appears to dominate North Macedonia’s preserved UFO record, but the available evidence does not show that the capital experiences more genuinely unexplained aerial phenomena than the rest of the country. A more convincing explanation is that Skopje combines the country’s largest population, its busiest transport hub, the greatest concentration of smartphones and media outlets, and airspace that regularly contains commercial aircraft, helicopters, drones and satellites. Those conditions naturally generate more observations and more reports than smaller towns.
The pattern therefore reflects reporting density rather than proven anomalous activity. Most documented cases associated with Skopje remain unresolved because of limited evidence rather than because they demonstrate extraordinary objects. Why the capital dominates the national record
The simplest reason Skopje appears to be North Macedonia’s UFO hotspot is that it is where most potential witnesses live, work and travel. In countries without a dedicated national UFO reporting system, reports tend to cluster where there are more observers, more journalists and greater internet use. Skopje fits all three conditions.
This becomes especially important because North Macedonia has never maintained a comprehensive public archive comparable to those found in a few larger countries. Instead, preserved cases are scattered across local news websites, international reporting databases and social media. Stories originating in Skopje therefore have a much better chance of surviving online than reports from smaller municipalities.
The result is a classic reporting bias:
- More people are available to witness unusual lights.
- More phones are ready to record them.
- Local television and news portals are concentrated in the capital.
- National stories are often reported first from Skopje before being repeated elsewhere.
This means the archive is unlikely to represent the true geographical distribution of unusual observations.
Air traffic creates many opportunities for misidentification
A second factor is that Skopje sits beside the country’s principal international airport and beneath busy civilian air routes. Aircraft approaching or departing can appear unusual depending on viewing angle, lighting, cloud conditions and distance.
Several characteristics commonly produce mistaken impressions:
- Landing lights viewed head-on can appear almost stationary for several minutes.
- Aircraft turning towards or away from the observer can seem to accelerate or stop abruptly.
- Multiple aircraft following the same arrival route may resemble a line of identical glowing objects.
- High-altitude traffic near sunset can remain brightly illuminated while the ground is already dark.
These effects are well known in aviation and become more common where regular commercial traffic exists. Drones, satellites and modern technology add new sources of reports
The increase in consumer drones has expanded the range of objects visible over urban areas. Bright navigation lights, hovering behaviour and sudden manoeuvres can easily appear unfamiliar, particularly at night.
One of the better-known Skopje incidents illustrates this point. The bright red object filmed near Bardovci in late 2018 attracted UFO speculation, yet local reporting also suggested that a drone was the most likely explanation. Although this could not be proven conclusively from the available footage, the proposed explanation was consistent with the object’s observed behaviour.
Since 2019 another factor has become increasingly important: satellite constellations. Starlink trains have generated UFO reports across the world, including in North Macedonia. During April 2020, the line of lights seen over the country was publicly identified by the Skopje Astronomical Society as newly launched Starlink satellites rather than unidentified craft. Does the surrounding landscape make sightings more common?
Skopje’s geography may also contribute to how people perceive lights in the sky, although it does not provide evidence of unusual activity.
The city lies within a broad valley surrounded by mountains. Depending on weather and viewing position:
- aircraft may disappear temporarily behind ridges before reappearing;
- lights can seem to emerge suddenly from behind terrain;
- atmospheric haze can distort brightness and colour;
- temperature inversions may exaggerate twinkling or apparent motion.
These effects can make ordinary aerial objects appear less familiar than they would over completely flat terrain.
Clear weather also plays a role. Why preserved reports favour Skopje
The capital benefits from a much stronger information infrastructure than the rest of North Macedonia.
When unusual lights appear over Skopje they are more likely to be:
- filmed from multiple locations;
- shared immediately on social media;
- picked up by local television stations;
- indexed by national news aggregators;
- copied into international UFO databases.
By contrast, a similar observation in a remote rural community may never reach a searchable archive.
This preservation bias helps explain why several of the country’s best-known cases—including the 2016 multiple-light reports and the 2018 Bardovci incident—originated from or near the capital. Their prominence reflects documentation rather than necessarily greater mystery.
What regional comparisons can—and cannot—show
The available evidence does not support the conclusion that Skopje experiences uniquely anomalous aerial phenomena compared with the rest of North Macedonia.
Instead, regional comparisons suggest a more cautious interpretation:
- Higher report numbers do not equal higher anomaly rates. More observers generally produce more reports.
- Most cases lack technical evidence. Publicly available reports rarely include radar data, calibrated photography or independent reconstruction.
- Alternative explanations remain common. Aircraft, drones, satellites, astronomical objects and atmospheric effects account for many sightings that initially appear unusual.
- Some cases remain unidentified only because evidence is incomplete. An unresolved report should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of an extraordinary object.
This distinction is important. “Unidentified” simply means that available information is insufficient for a confident explanation, not that an exotic explanation has been established.
The most likely explanation for Skopje’s apparent hotspot
Taken together, the available evidence points towards an accumulation of ordinary factors rather than an exceptional concentration of unexplained phenomena.
Skopje combines the country’s largest population, its busiest airport, extensive media coverage, widespread smartphone use, active amateur astronomy, and an urban environment filled with aircraft, drones and satellites. Those conditions naturally maximise both the number of observations and the probability that those observations will be recorded and preserved.
Consequently, Skopje’s reputation as North Macedonia’s UFO hotspot is best understood as a reporting hotspot. The concentration of documented sightings reflects where observations are most likely to be made, shared and archived, while the current evidence does not demonstrate that the capital experiences a higher incidence of genuinely unexplained aerial events than the rest of the country.
