The military witness account
The incident occurred over Baghdad on 4 November 1959 and was reported by a United States military officer serving as an assistant air attaché who was also an experienced pilot. According to the surviving Project Blue Book documentation, the witness observed an intensely bright, round object near the horizon that appeared to be approaching at high speed.
Several details initially gave the sighting the appearance of an unidentified flying object:

Why the object appeared to approach
One of the most useful aspects of the Baghdad case is that it demonstrates a common problem in interpreting brief visual sightings.
Perspective can create an illusion of direct approach
Most people imagine meteors travelling sideways across the sky. In reality, a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere on a trajectory roughly aligned with the observer’s line of sight can appear to come almost directly towards them. Because lateral motion is minimal from that viewpoint, the object seems fixed while rapidly increasing in brightness.
As atmospheric heating intensifies, the meteor may suddenly fragment, producing multiple glowing pieces that spread apart. To an observer unfamiliar with this geometry, the event can resemble an object exploding or changing configuration.
The Baghdad witness reported exactly this sequence: rapid apparent approach followed by fragmentation into reddish pieces over only a few seconds. Brightness can distort perceived distance
Human observers are poor at estimating the distance of isolated lights against a dark sky. Exceptionally bright meteors often appear much closer than they really are, creating the impression that they are flying through local airspace rather than burning up tens of kilometres above the Earth’s surface.
This effect is amplified when there are no visual reference points. A bright fireball low on the horizon can therefore seem both unusually large and relatively nearby despite remaining at very high altitude.
What the official classification established
Project Blue Book investigators classified the Baghdad event as an astronomical phenomenon and concluded that it was probably a meteor rather than an unidentified craft. This classification is significant for several reasons.
First, it was not imposed against the witness’s judgement. The reporting officer himself had already favoured the meteor explanation before the formal evaluation.

- An impression of direct approach.
- Sudden fragmentation.
- A short observation time preventing detailed examination.
Modern readers sometimes focus on these characteristics while overlooking the equally important fact that the observer never insisted the object represented unknown technology. Instead, the witness recognised that unusual viewing geometry could produce a misleading impression.
This makes the Baghdad incident an unusually valuable historical benchmark. Rather than illustrating official dismissal of an unexplained event, it demonstrates a case in which eyewitness interpretation, physical evidence and investigative conclusions all converged on the same natural explanation.
