What Really Happened in Lebanon's UFO Cases?
Lebanon has a genuine history of reported unidentified flying objects, but not a well-documented national UFO mystery. The public record is thin, fragmented and dominated by eyewitness recollections, recycled media stories and short videos whose original files, dates or locations are often unavailable.

Introduction
The clearest Lebanese example is also the least exotic: a spectacular spiral seen in June 2012 was traced to a Russian missile test. Other episodes—reported lights near Beirut, Byblos and the Mount Lebanon town of Broummana—remain unidentified chiefly because the surviving evidence is inadequate, not because it demonstrates extraordinary technology. The most defensible conclusion is therefore modest: Lebanon has produced credible reports of things witnesses could not immediately identify, but no publicly verified case establishes extraterrestrial craft or genuinely anomalous flight performance.[timesofisrael.com]timesofisrael.comThe Times of Israel Glowing streak spurs UFO fearsThe Times of IsraelGlowing streak spurs UFO fearsJune 7, 2012 — 8 Jun 2012 — A glowing light that streaked across the night sky shortly b…

What Lebanon’s UFO record actually contains
Lebanon lacks a continuous, authoritative incident catalogue. Most supposed cases survive through entertainment websites, social-media posts, later retellings or foreign civilian reporting systems. This makes even basic chronology difficult. A claim may acquire a precise year, location and witness count through repetition while its original newspaper report, photograph or broadcast remains inaccessible.
Several episodes nevertheless recur often enough to define the country’s UFO narrative:
- an alleged Beirut sighting in 1952;[facebook.com]facebook.comfirst documented ufo sighting in lebanon beirut 1952First documented UFO sighting in Lebanon. Beirut, 1952.Their sighting was corroborated by the staff of Center number 15 who said…

- a well-observed spiral or expanding cloud in June 2012;
- lights or an object reported over Beirut and Byblos in March 2013;[beirutnightlife.com]beirutnightlife.comUF O ArchivesUFO Archives - BNLUFO in Lebanon? News · UFO in Lebanon? Mar 22, 2013. Commuters have reported seeing an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO)…
- digitally circulated “landing” and hovering-object videos from the late 2010s and early 2020s;
- more recent civilian claims of recurring luminous orbs near Beirut.
These incidents are not equivalent. The 2012 event was observed across several countries and subsequently explained. The Broummana and 2013 stories are weakly documented but not conclusively resolved. Many recent clips are effectively unauditable because only compressed copies and dramatic captions remain available.[facebook.com]facebook.comfirst documented ufo sighting in lebanon beirut 1952First documented UFO sighting in Lebanon. Beirut, 1952.Their sighting was corroborated by the staff of Center number 15 who said…
The term “UFO” also requires care. It means only that an observer did not identify something at the time. It does not imply an alien spacecraft. Modern investigators often use “unidentified anomalous phenomena”, or UAP, but the evidential problem remains the same: a light can stay unidentified simply because there is too little information to test ordinary explanations. NASA’s independent UAP study stressed that eyewitness reports may reveal patterns, yet cannot establish the physical nature of an event without calibrated, corroborating sensor data.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportEye- witness reports should be considered along with corroborating sensor data in the study of U…
The incidents that shaped the story
The uncertain 1952 Beirut account
A frequently repeated claim describes a UFO sighting in Beirut in 1952, sometimes presented as Lebanon’s first documented modern case. Online summaries say that witnesses at more than one observation point saw a lit object whose lights later disappeared. However, the presently accessible versions are social-media reproductions rather than a complete contemporary file. They do not provide a securely preserved original report, exact observation geometry, meteorological data, radar evidence or an official investigative conclusion.[Facebook]facebook.comfirst documented ufo sighting in lebanon beirut 1952First documented UFO sighting in Lebanon. Beirut, 1952.Their sighting was corroborated by the staff of Center number 15 who said…
The date is plausible in cultural terms: 1952 was a peak year in international flying-saucer reporting, particularly following highly publicised American incidents. That context, however, does not authenticate the Beirut claim. Without the original Lebanese source and its full chain of custody, the case should be treated as an archival lead rather than an established incident.
Its current status is therefore contested and insufficiently documented. The story may preserve a real sighting, but its evidential value cannot be separated from later embellishment.
The Broummana lights
One of Lebanon’s most repeated local stories concerns luminous objects reportedly seen in or near Broummana, a mountain town east of Beirut. Later accounts attribute observations to several witnesses, including television journalist Nadine Abou Fadel, who reportedly described lights descending, disappearing and then moving back upwards. Some versions say that Gerard Araj photographed the objects and that footage or testimony was carried by Lebanese broadcasters.[Fanoos.com]fanoos.comUF O in LebanonUF O in Lebanon
This sounds stronger than a solitary report because named witnesses and media organisations are mentioned. Yet the available evidence remains frustratingly incomplete. Public retellings do not consistently establish the incident date, provide the original unedited photographs, identify the camera settings or reproduce a complete contemporaneous news package. Estimates that the objects were approximately two metres across are especially unreliable because physical size cannot be calculated without knowing distance.
No ordinary explanation has been demonstrated from the available material, but neither has anomalous behaviour. Lights apparently “descending” or “shooting upwards” can result from movement towards or away from an observer, changes in brightness, obscuration by terrain or cloud, or inaccurate distance perception at night. The Broummana case is best classified as unresolved through lack of data, not confirmed as extraordinary.
The June 2012 spiral
On 7 June 2012, residents in Lebanon and neighbouring countries saw an expanding luminous object, spiral or glowing cloud in the evening sky. Reports came from a wide area that included Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The geographic spread immediately distinguished the event from a small low-flying craft: whatever produced it was at very high altitude and visible across hundreds of kilometres.[timesofisrael.com]timesofisrael.comThe Times of Israel Glowing streak spurs UFO fearsThe Times of IsraelGlowing streak spurs UFO fearsJune 7, 2012 — 8 Jun 2012 — A glowing light that streaked across the night sky shortly b…
Contemporary observers initially suggested a meteor, aircraft, missile or UFO. Astronomers noted that the light grew into a cloud-like formation and appeared to disintegrate. Russian authorities subsequently acknowledged a ballistic-missile test, and aerospace analysis connected the display to exhaust and material released at altitude. Similar spiral patterns have been produced by failed or unusual rocket and missile stages elsewhere.[The Aviationist]theaviationist.comThe AviationistWatch this: Mysterious luminous object appears over…7 Jun 2012 — The sort-of UFO was also filmed over Lökbatan, a settl…
This is Lebanon’s most useful UFO case precisely because it was solved. Witnesses were not necessarily careless: they saw an unfamiliar and visually remarkable event. The error arose when “unidentified” was interpreted as evidence of an exotic craft before regional launch information became available.
The 2012 spiral is explained: a missile-related high-altitude phenomenon.
Beirut and Byblos in March 2013
In March 2013, Lebanese online outlets reported that commuters in Beirut and Byblos had seen a strange object or light. Surviving coverage is brief and appears to derive from a Lebanonfiles report that was republished elsewhere. The accessible summaries contain no radar record, original high-resolution imagery, precise sightlines or detailed witness interviews.[beirutnightlife.com]beirutnightlife.comUF O ArchivesUFO Archives - BNLUFO in Lebanon? News · UFO in Lebanon? Mar 22, 2013. Commuters have reported seeing an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO)…
The two reported locations could suggest a high-altitude object visible along the coast, but they do not by themselves establish one shared object. Aircraft approaching or departing Beirut, bright planets, lanterns, balloons and astronomical objects can all generate multi-location reports. Conversely, the absence of sufficient evidence means that no particular explanation can be assigned responsibly.
The incident remains unresolved but low-information. Its importance lies more in demonstrating how Lebanese UFO stories circulate—from a short local report into paranormal archives—than in the strength of its physical evidence.
Viral landing and hovering videos
Later Lebanese UFO claims increasingly arrived as digital video. A 2019 clip purporting to show a craft landing somewhere in Lebanon was dismissed by a Lebanese commentator as conspicuous computer-generated imagery. The clip lacked persuasive provenance and was framed more as online spectacle than as verifiable documentation.[Blog Baladi]blogbaladi.comBlog Baladi Mariam Nour Denies UFO Landing in #LebanonBlog Baladi Mariam Nour Denies UFO Landing in #Lebanon
Other videos described as showing lights over Beirut in 2021 or later have circulated through Reddit, Facebook and paranormal accounts. These may depict real lights, but a compressed video without the original metadata rarely permits reliable measurement of distance, speed or size. Camera autofocus, digital zoom, stabilisation, exposure changes and movement by the person filming can make stationary or slow-moving lights appear to accelerate, pulse or change shape.[Reddit]reddit.comufo sighting in beirut 2021ufo sighting in beirut 2021
The broader history of manufactured UFO clips demonstrates why provenance matters. Highly convincing aerial scenes can be created entirely through computer graphics, sometimes including not just the object but the supposed landscape, vehicle and sky. Visual impressiveness is therefore not a substitute for an original file, identifiable witnesses and independent recordings.[WIRED]wired.comThe Making of the Ultimate Fake UFO Video (Where Absolutely Everything Is FakeThe Making of the Ultimate Fake UFO Video (Where Absolutely Everything Is Fake
Why Lebanon’s skies are unusually easy to misread
Lebanon combines several conditions that complicate aerial identification. Beirut’s dense lighting and coastal humidity can distort distant lights. Mount Lebanon provides elevated viewpoints from which aircraft over the Mediterranean may appear to hover or move unusually slowly. The country also sits beside busy regional air routes and within a security environment involving military aircraft, missiles, drones and surveillance platforms.
These are not theoretical possibilities. Real drones have crashed or operated over Beirut, while periods of conflict have placed aircraft, projectiles and patrols in Lebanese airspace. A distant military drone seen only as a light may be impossible for a civilian observer to identify, yet its unidentified status says nothing about extraterrestrial origin.[Wikipedia]Wikipedia2019 Beirut drone crash2019 Beirut drone crash
Lebanon’s compact geography creates a second difficulty. A high-altitude rocket plume, bright planet or aircraft can be reported from Beirut, the coast and mountain communities almost simultaneously. Multiple witnesses may therefore confirm that a phenomenon was visible without confirming what it was—or whether estimates of its distance and manoeuvres were accurate.
Common candidates in Lebanese reports include:
- conventional aircraft viewed head-on;
- helicopters and military drones;
- balloons and windborne material;[aaro.mil]aaro.milSource details in endnotes.
- satellites and satellite formations;
- meteors, rocket re-entries and missile plumes;
- bright planets or stars affected by haze;
- reflections, internal lens artefacts and digital stabilisation errors;
- deliberate visual effects or miscaptioned footage from another country.
Official case analyses elsewhere repeatedly show the same pattern. The US All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office has resolved published incidents as balloons, birds or conventional aircraft, while leaving others formally unresolved because the imagery was insufficient. “Unresolved” therefore describes a limit in the data, not evidence that familiar explanations have been excluded.[AARO]aaro.milOfficial UAP ImageryOfficial UAP Imagery
What the official record does—and does not—show
No accessible evidence indicates that Lebanon has maintained a dedicated public UFO bureau, issued a national catalogue of sightings or released a substantial set of declassified UAP investigations. This absence should not be exaggerated into proof of secrecy. Lebanese military and civil-aviation institutions would naturally track unidentified aircraft when they presented an airspace or security concern, but such activity is different from running a scientific programme devoted to anomalous phenomena.
Foreign archives contain large collections concerning UFOs and UAP, including records held by the US National Archives, the CIA and Britain’s National Archives. Searches can nevertheless produce misleading matches because “Lebanon” may refer to an individual’s birthplace, a location in the United States or an unrelated diplomatic document. A reference to Beirut appearing beside the term “UFO” in a request log is not evidence of a Lebanese sighting file.[nationalarchives.gov.uk]nationalarchives.gov.ukOpen source on nationalarchives.gov.uk.
Likewise, recently published US UAP imagery labelled only “Middle East” cannot automatically be attributed to Lebanon. Regional labels may cover a vast operational area, and an object recorded by a foreign military platform does not become a Lebanese case unless its location is independently established.
The practical result is an archive gap. Lebanon’s strongest potential sources—old newspaper files, original television broadcasts, air-traffic records, military logs and private photographic negatives—are either not publicly indexed or have not been assembled into a transparent research collection.
Evidence quality: confirmed, contested and debunked
A useful way to read Lebanon’s UFO history is to separate the existence of a report from the interpretation attached to it.
Confirmed as an observed phenomenon: The June 2012 spiral was widely seen and recorded. There is little doubt that witnesses observed a real luminous event. Its cause, however, was missile-related rather than extraterrestrial.[The Times of Israel]timesofisrael.comThe Times of Israel Glowing streak spurs UFO fearsThe Times of IsraelGlowing streak spurs UFO fearsJune 7, 2012 — 8 Jun 2012 — A glowing light that streaked across the night sky shortly b…
Credible as testimony but not physically verified: The Broummana lights may have involved sincere witnesses and media attention. Yet surviving public material does not establish distance, size, acceleration or a single physical object.[Fanoos.com]fanoos.comUF O in LebanonUF O in Lebanon
Contested archival claims: The alleged 1952 Beirut sighting and parts of the national chronology rely on later reproductions whose original documentation has not been made readily available.[Facebook]facebook.comfirst documented ufo sighting in lebanon beirut 1952First documented UFO sighting in Lebanon. Beirut, 1952.Their sighting was corroborated by the staff of Center number 15 who said…
Low-information reports: The 2013 Beirut–Byblos episode and recurring orb claims contain too little testable information to distinguish aircraft, celestial objects, balloons or other explanations.[beirutnightlife.com]beirutnightlife.comUF O ArchivesUFO Archives - BNLUFO in Lebanon? News · UFO in Lebanon? Mar 22, 2013. Commuters have reported seeing an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO)…
Debunked or strongly suspect media: The supposed 2019 landing video was treated locally as obvious CGI. Similar unverified social-media clips should not be counted as independent incidents merely because different accounts repost them.[Blog Baladi]blogbaladi.comBlog Baladi Mariam Nour Denies UFO Landing in #LebanonBlog Baladi Mariam Nour Denies UFO Landing in #Lebanon
No publicly available Lebanese case currently combines the features that would make an extraordinary interpretation persuasive: multiple independent calibrated sensors, precise location and timing, original files, known viewing geometry, radar or air-traffic correlation, documented chain of custody and performance that demonstrably exceeds conventional aircraft.
How a Lebanese sighting could be investigated properly
A serious future investigation would begin before the story is repeatedly compressed and reposted. Witnesses should preserve original photographs and video rather than sending only edited copies through messaging applications. Exact time, coordinates, viewing direction, apparent elevation and duration should be recorded immediately.
Independent data could then be compared with:
- civil and military flight activity where available;
- satellite and rocket-launch records;
- astronomical positions and meteor activity;
- wind direction and balloon drift;
- weather, cloud height and visibility;
- recordings from observers at separated locations;
- physical or radar evidence, where legitimately obtainable.
Triangulation from two known positions is especially important. It can transform an apparent movement against the sky into an estimate of range, altitude and speed. Without range, a witness cannot reliably distinguish a small nearby object from a much larger distant one.
Modern scientific proposals for UAP research emphasise coordinated wide- and narrow-field cameras, radar, spectral instruments, acoustic sensors and environmental measurements. Such systems are designed to expose camera artefacts and ordinary aerial traffic while preserving genuinely unusual observations for analysis.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
For Lebanon, a modest civilian network linking astronomers, aviation specialists, photographers and university researchers would be more valuable than another collection of dramatic clips. Its task would not be to prove or disprove extraterrestrial visitation, but to record unfamiliar aerial events well enough that explanations could be tested.
The most reasonable assessment
Lebanon’s UFO history is culturally interesting but evidentially weak. Its reports cluster around Beirut, the Mediterranean coast and the elevated communities of Mount Lebanon, where population density, broad horizons and heavy air activity make sightings more likely—and misidentification easier.
One major incident, the June 2012 spiral, has a convincing conventional explanation. Several older stories remain unresolved because original records are missing or incomplete. Recent videos generally offer less evidence than their clarity seems to promise, since digital images cannot establish unusual performance without location, range, metadata and corroboration.
The unresolved remainder should neither be dismissed as imaginary nor promoted as proof of alien craft. It consists mainly of sincere observations whose causes can no longer be reconstructed. Lebanon’s central UFO mystery is therefore not a hidden fleet above Beirut, but a missing evidence chain: scattered witnesses, inaccessible broadcasts, uncertain dates and images detached from the circumstances in which they were made.
