Witnesses consistently described several striking features:

  • an intensely luminous object crossing the sky;
  • increasing brightness before fragmentation;
  • one or more loud explosions;
  • sonic booms following the visible passage;
  • reports of hissing sounds during the final phase;
  • fragments apparently falling south of Boumdeid.

These characteristics are entirely consistent with a large meteoroid entering Earth’s atmosphere at high velocity. The explosions caused understandable alarm among local residents. Before any scientific investigation had begun, many witnesses simply knew that an extraordinarily bright object had crossed the sky and appeared to explode overhead.

Although the reconstructed trajectory could not achieve the precision available from dedicated fireball camera networks, the independent witness observations showed remarkable consistency regarding the direction of travel, fragmentation, and approximate fall location.

It retained a fresh black fusion crust formed during atmospheric entry, while broken surfaces revealed visible chondrules—small spherical structures characteristic of many stony meteorites. Laboratory Proof That It Was a Meteorite

Laboratory examination produced several independent lines of evidence confirming that the recovered object was a freshly fallen meteorite.

Petrographic analysis revealed a strongly recrystallised ordinary chondrite of type L6, showing a brecciated internal texture. Mineralogical examination identified typical meteoritic minerals including:

  • olivine;

  • troilite;

  • ilmenite.

The meteorite was classified as L6, shock stage S2, weathering grade W0. They detected short-lived cosmogenic radionuclides, including beryllium-7, cobalt-56, cobalt-58, and scandium-46, isotopes that decay relatively quickly after exposure to cosmic radiation ends. Their presence confirmed that the meteorite had entered Earth’s atmosphere only recently. Why This Is Not Considered a UFO Case
