Introduction
Seychelles has one of the sparsest publicly documented UFO records of any inhabited country. That should not be interpreted as evidence that unusual aerial observations never occur there. Instead, the available evidence suggests that the public record is shaped by the country’s small population, the concentration of residents on a single island, reliance on overseas reporting databases, and the limited preservation and digitisation of older local material. The result is a classic reporting problem rather than a straightforward measure of sightings. What researchers can study is constrained by what was recorded, preserved and made publicly searchable. For Seychelles, those constraints are unusually strong.
Why Mahé dominates the available record
The fact that both publicly indexed reports come from Mahé is unsurprising once the country’s geography and demographics are considered.
Mahé is home to Victoria, Seychelles International Airport, most government institutions and the overwhelming majority of the national population. It also has the greatest concentration of roads, outdoor lighting, aviation activity and people who might independently observe and later report unusual aerial events. By contrast, many outer islands have tiny permanent populations or are used primarily for conservation, tourism or specialised economic activities.
With so few observers spread across distant islands, even a genuinely unusual event may produce only one or two witnesses. If those witnesses never submit a report to an international database, the event effectively disappears from the searchable historical record.
This geographical concentration also affects retrospective research. When investigators look for corroborating witnesses decades later, Mahé offers the best chance of finding newspaper references, official records or additional testimony. Similar events on remote islands are much less likely to leave a recoverable documentary trail.
How overseas databases shape visibility
One of the most important reasons for Seychelles’ sparse UFO record is that most international researchers rely on databases that depend on voluntary public submissions rather than systematic national reporting.
NUFORC itself makes clear that its archive consists primarily of witness reports submitted directly by members of the public. Reports are reviewed, but the organisation does not claim that every submission is independently verified. For Seychelles, this introduces several layers of selection bias:
- Witnesses must know that an overseas reporting service exists.
- They must be comfortable submitting reports in English through an online system.
- Older sightings remain absent unless someone later remembers and submits them.
- Local stories published only in Seychellois media may never enter international catalogues.
The 1978 Victoria case illustrates this clearly. What may be missing from local and outer-island archives

- Older local newspapers have only limited digital availability.

The outer islands present an even greater challenge. Their small populations mean that an unusual aerial event could easily have only a single witness. Even if reported locally, such an account might never reach an internationally searchable archive.
Population size matters more than many readers realise
Seychelles is among the world’s smallest sovereign states by population. Statistically, a country with relatively few residents should be expected to generate fewer voluntary reports of any uncommon phenomenon, including UFO sightings.
This becomes even more pronounced when reports are filtered through international databases. A large country may produce hundreds of submissions simply because millions more people have opportunities to observe and report unusual lights or objects. Seychelles has a far smaller pool of potential observers from the outset.
Small numbers also make annual variation misleading. One additional report can substantially change the apparent national total without indicating any real increase in unusual aerial activity.
Aviation records are not the same as UFO archives
It is sometimes assumed that aviation authorities would automatically preserve records of unexplained aerial objects. In practice, aviation reporting systems have a different purpose.

This has two consequences for Seychelles.
First, some unusual lights may now receive ordinary astronomical explanations before anyone files a UFO report. Second, increasing public awareness of satellites may discourage reporting altogether, with witnesses assuming they have already identified what they saw.
