The country’s regional pattern is equally distinctive. Most reports originate from densely populated coastal areas around Beirut or from elevated locations in Mount Lebanon, where large numbers of observers, expansive views of the sky and extensive media coverage make unusual aerial phenomena more likely to be noticed and reported. In recent years, social media has accelerated the circulation of such claims while simultaneously making independent verification more difficult.

The earliest sighting consistently associated with modern Lebanese UFO history is an alleged incident in Beirut in 1952. It is frequently described as Lebanon’s first documented UFO report, with witnesses allegedly observing an illuminated object whose lights later disappeared.
The difficulty is not the claim itself but the surviving evidence. Modern retellings generally trace back to later reproductions, brief summaries or social-media posts rather than accessible contemporary newspaper archives or official investigation files. No publicly available government report, radar record or preserved photographic evidence has emerged that allows the event to be reconstructed in detail.
The timing is historically plausible because 1952 coincided with one of the world’s largest waves of reported “flying saucer” sightings. That wider international context explains why such reports appeared in many countries, but it does not independently verify the Beirut account.
Sparse reports through the following decades
Between the 1950s and the early 2000s, Lebanon does not appear to have produced a continuous publicly accessible catalogue of UFO investigations.

Reports around Beirut and Byblos in 2013
In March 2013, reports circulated describing unusual lights or unidentified objects seen near Beirut and Byblos. These incidents became widely shared online and entered later UFO databases.

Late 2010s and 2020s: the era of smartphones
Recent Lebanese UFO claims increasingly involve:
- glowing stationary lights;
- rapidly moving luminous points;
- hovering “orbs”;
- short mobile-phone videos shared through social media.
Although the volume of reports has increased, their evidential value has often decreased.
Compressed video, uncertain recording dates, absent metadata, unknown camera settings and repeated reposting make independent analysis difficult. Some clips disappear after being reshared through multiple platforms, leaving investigators unable to examine the original files.
Beirut, Byblos, Broummana and regional sighting patterns
Lebanon’s reported UFO geography is remarkably concentrated rather than evenly distributed.
Beirut: the country’s reporting centre
Beirut accounts for a disproportionate number of reported sightings for several reasons.
As Lebanon’s largest urban area, it combines:
- the country’s highest population density;
- extensive media presence;
- numerous observers overlooking the Mediterranean;
- rapid dissemination through television and social media.
Many reports involve lights seen over the sea or the western horizon. In practice, this introduces numerous conventional possibilities, including distant aircraft, atmospheric refraction, astronomical objects and military activity.
The city’s position therefore increases both genuine observation opportunities and the likelihood of misidentification.
Mount Lebanon and Broummana
Reports associated with Broummana and neighbouring Mount Lebanon communities form another recurring cluster.
Several factors may contribute:
- elevated viewing positions;
- darker skies than central Beirut;
- wide panoramic horizons;
- visibility over both inland mountains and the Mediterranean.
The region has repeatedly appeared in Lebanese UFO discussions, but individual cases generally lack enough preserved evidence for detailed reconstruction.
Byblos and the northern coast
Byblos appears periodically in Lebanese UFO timelines, especially in reports involving luminous objects observed over the Mediterranean coastline.
As with Beirut, coastal viewing conditions can produce difficult identification problems because aircraft approaching from long distances, atmospheric scattering and bright celestial objects near the horizon often appear unusual to observers.
No publicly available investigation has demonstrated that reported Byblos cases involve behaviour beyond conventional explanations.
How reporting changed from newspapers to social media
Lebanon’s UFO history can also be divided according to how sightings were recorded.

Earlier reports depended on:
