What Witnesses Reported
The surviving Project Blue Book file records two separate observations from the same day in August 1952.
The first occurred near Constantine at approximately 9:15 pm. According to the report, two witnesses observed a very bright object moving rapidly towards Guelma. One of the more interesting details is that the report explicitly stated the object did not resemble the popular “flying saucer” descriptions circulating internationally during 1952. The second report came earlier the same evening, around 7:20 pm, from the docks at Philippeville on Algeria’s Mediterranean coast. Numerous witnesses reportedly observed an enormous red disc travelling from north towards the west while leaving what was described as a greenish trail behind it. Although these reports have often been treated together in UFO literature, the archive itself presents them as two separate incidents occurring in different locations rather than as a confirmed single object moving across Algeria.
What the Project Blue Book File Preserves
The principal reason these sightings remain noteworthy is not their spectacular content but the nature of the surviving documentation.
The file forms part of the official Project Blue Book records, now preserved by the United States National Archives after the programme’s closure. It survives as a five-page document originating from an authentic government archive rather than from later magazine articles or memoirs. The archive preserves several useful pieces of information:

- the reporting locations;

Why the Archive Is Strong Evidence—But Only of Reporting
One common misunderstanding is that inclusion in Project Blue Book means the United States Air Force considered an event genuinely unexplained.
The archive demonstrates something more limited but historically significant: contemporary observers reported unusual aerial phenomena seriously enough for the information to be transmitted into an official intelligence system. That alone has evidential value because it reduces the possibility that the incidents were invented decades later.
However, archival authenticity should not be confused with confirmation of the reported phenomenon. Historical researchers distinguish between:
- Authenticity of the document — the file is genuine.
- Accuracy of the witness observations — uncertain.
- Correct interpretation of the observations — unresolved.
The first point is well established. Why Meteor and Aircraft Explanations Remain Open
Neither report contains enough observational detail to eliminate conventional explanations.
The Philippeville description is especially compatible with several natural possibilities. A bright meteor can appear as a luminous disc to observers, particularly when seen through atmospheric haze or near the horizon. Persistent ionisation trails may also appear greenish, matching one of the more distinctive features preserved in the archive. Without exact timing, direction, elevation and independent astronomical reconstruction, however, no meteor identification can be confirmed retrospectively.
Aircraft also remain plausible in principle. Perceived size, colour and speed can vary dramatically because of viewing angle, atmospheric conditions and observer distance, especially during twilight or night-time conditions over coastal areas. The archive contains no measurements that would permit modern trajectory analysis.
The Constantine report likewise remains ambiguous. The statement that the local weather office released no balloon rules out only one specific possibility. It does not exclude:
- aircraft operating from elsewhere;
- balloons launched outside the local area;
- meteors;
- atmospheric optical effects;
- errors in estimating speed or distance.

What the Missing Evidence Means
Modern investigations of unusual aerial events typically seek multiple independent forms of corroboration, including radar records, photographs, astronomical reconstructions, weather data, instrument readings and lengthy witness interviews.
Almost all of those elements are absent here.
This absence should not be interpreted as evidence that investigators deliberately concealed information. Instead, it reflects the practical reality of many early 1950s intelligence reports. As a result, historians can establish that unusual observations were reported in August 1952, but they cannot reconstruct the events with the precision expected in a modern scientific investigation.
How This Case Fits Within Algeria’s UFO Record
Within Algeria’s relatively sparse historical UFO record, the Constantine and Philippeville reports remain the strongest documentary evidence because they satisfy two important criteria simultaneously:
- they were recorded contemporaneously rather than reconstructed decades later; and
- the original government documentation remains publicly accessible.
Later Algerian cases are often more dramatic in narrative detail but rely on retrospective testimony or secondary publications. By contrast, the 1952 archive provides a verifiable historical document while offering comparatively little descriptive detail.
That combination explains why researchers continue to cite the case. It is not Algeria’s most spectacular UFO story, but it is arguably its most important archival one. The surviving evidence supports the existence of genuine contemporary reports entering official files, yet it falls well short of demonstrating that an exotic or non-human craft was observed.
