How parallax and tracking errors alter appearances

The strongest ordinary explanation focuses less on the object itself than on how airborne infrared systems record moving targets.

Parallax occurs when the observing platform moves while tracking a distant object. An MQ-9 Reaper is itself flying at considerable speed. Could it have been a drone?

Another possibility is that the object seen after the apparent engagement is not the original target at all.

  • fragments from the missile continuing on a ballistic path;
