How parallax and tracking errors alter appearances

The strongest ordinary explanation focuses less on the object itself than on how airborne infrared systems record moving targets.

Parallax occurs when the observing platform moves while tracking a distant object. An MQ-9 Reaper is itself flying at considerable speed. If the camera continually slews to keep a target centred, distant water, clouds and the target can appear to move relative to one another in ways that do not directly represent the target’s true flight path.

In practical terms, this can create several misleading impressions:

  • a nearly stationary object can appear to travel rapidly;

Could it have been a drone?

A small drone represents another conventional possibility, although it has its own limitations.

Military operations around Yemen routinely involve unmanned aerial vehicles of multiple sizes and capabilities. Small reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions and improvised airborne systems have all been documented in the wider regional conflict. An unidentified drone therefore cannot be excluded simply because the object appeared unusual.

However, the public footage does not clearly demonstrate features normally associated with powered drones, including:

  • identifiable propulsion;
  • sustained manoeuvres against the wind;
  • repeated controlled course changes;
  • recognisable airframe structure.

If the object were a very small drone viewed at long range through infrared optics, many structural details could disappear into a single bright point. Conversely, the absence of visible drone characteristics means the video alone cannot establish that explanation either. The available imagery is simply too limited for positive identification.

Could the apparent “orb” actually be debris?

Another possibility is that the object seen after the apparent engagement is not the original target at all.

Several scenarios have been proposed:

  • fragments from the missile continuing on a ballistic path;
  • pieces of a lightweight airborne object surviving partial damage;
