Where the major reports occurred

The reports most frequently associated with the Venezuelan wave appeared during the latter months of 1954 and were distributed across several parts of the country rather than being confined to a single locality.

Petare (Miranda State) became the best-known case. According to contemporary newspaper accounts later reproduced in UFO literature, Gustavo González and José Ponce claimed their vehicle was blocked by a glowing object during the early hours of 29 November 1954. They described encountering small, hairy humanoids, one of whom allegedly threw González to the ground before the beings departed in a luminous craft. The witnesses reportedly went directly to police afterwards, and later accounts mention that González bore physical scratches, although surviving documentation for the medical examination itself is limited. Palmarito is usually presented as the second major location. Reports described farmers observing a landed luminous object together with small humanoid figures only hours after the Petare encounter. Valencia generated multiple reports of unusual aerial objects rather than dramatic close encounters. Witnesses described bright objects manoeuvring over or near the city, contributing to the impression that sightings were occurring across central Venezuela rather than remaining isolated around Caracas. These reports generally lack the detailed witness interviews available for Petare and therefore occupy a weaker evidential position.

Carora likewise entered later catalogues as part of the same national sequence. Here the emphasis was largely on aerial observations rather than physical interaction. The idea of a unified Venezuelan wave developed through the interaction of newspapers, UFO organisations and later books rather than through any official national investigation.

Was the wave a shared phenomenon or narrative contagion?

The clustering of reports across Venezuela raises two broad interpretations.

One possibility is that witnesses in different regions observed a genuinely unusual phenomenon. Supporters of this interpretation point to several features:

  • reports emerged from geographically separated locations;
  • some incidents involved multiple witnesses;
  • several cases described luminous aerial objects rather than only distant lights;

By late 1954, flying saucers had become an international news story following earlier waves in Europe and North America.
