Introduction

The year 1978 occupies a unique place in Italian UFO history. It produced the country’s largest twentieth-century wave of reported UFO sightings, a striking increase in close-encounter and humanoid narratives, and the emergence of the Zanfretta case, which remains Italy’s best-known and most disputed alleged alien abduction. The significance of 1978 lies less in proving extraordinary claims than in showing how an intense reporting wave, widespread media attention and a handful of dramatic incidents reshaped Italian ufology. The surge also prompted the Italian government to formalise national procedures for collecting UFO reports through the Italian Air Force, giving Italy one of Europe’s longest-running official reporting systems.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

Understanding 1978 therefore requires separating three related but distinct questions: why reports multiplied so dramatically, what makes the Zanfretta story unusually influential, and why neither sincere witnesses nor supporting testimony establish that an alien abduction occurred.

The National Surge in Close-Encounter Reports

Italian UFO reports had already been increasing throughout the 1970s, but 1978 became an exceptional year. According to the Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici (CISU), it generated more reports than any other year of the twentieth century in Italy, with around 1,800 catalogued cases and an unprecedented volume of newspaper coverage. The organisation’s archival review found roughly 2,400 contemporary newspaper articles devoted to UFOs during the year, illustrating how the phenomenon became a national media event rather than merely a collection of isolated sightings.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

Several factors combined to produce this wave:

  • Numerous reports of unusual lights and structured aerial objects across multiple regions.
  • An unusually high number of claimed close encounters, including reports involving humanoid figures.
  • Intense national press coverage that encouraged additional reporting.
  • Growing public familiarity with UFO culture during the late 1970s, including popular books, television coverage and international discussion of close encounters.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

Researchers studying reporting patterns caution that waves do not necessarily indicate an increase in unexplained physical phenomena. Public expectation, media attention and increased willingness to report unusual experiences all tend to amplify the number of cases received by investigators. CISU itself notes that many reports in its catalogue ultimately receive conventional explanations, while only a minority remain formally unidentified after investigation.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ufo in ItaliaCentro Italiano Studi UfologiciUfo in Italia - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici…

The geographical distribution was also uneven. Northern Italy, particularly Liguria, Piedmont and neighbouring regions, generated a disproportionate number of reports, partly reflecting the activity of local investigators and civilian UFO groups as well as genuine reporting differences.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici Ufo in ItaliaCentro Italiano Studi UfologiciUfo in Italia - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici…

Zanfretta’s Account and Its Supporting Claims

The most famous incident to emerge from the 1978 wave involved Pier Fortunato Zanfretta, a private security guard working near Genoa.

On the night of 6 December 1978, while responding to what was believed to be a burglary alarm near Torriglia, Zanfretta radioed colleagues in obvious distress before later being found confused and frightened. He claimed to have encountered enormous humanoid beings near a large illuminated object. Over the following two years he reported several additional encounters, gradually developing an elaborate narrative involving repeated abductions and communication with non-human entities.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

The case became nationally famous because it appeared to contain several elements often presented as corroboration:

  • Radio transmissions during the initial event. Fellow security personnel heard Zanfretta sounding distressed over company communications before he was located.
  • Rapid response by colleagues. Other guards participated in searches after losing contact with him.
  • Reports of physical traces. Investigators described disturbed ground, impressions and damaged vegetation at some locations associated with the encounters.
  • Multiple witnesses to unusual lights. Some individuals reported observing bright aerial lights or unusual luminous phenomena during parts of the broader sequence of incidents.
  • Repeated consistency. Zanfretta continued describing related experiences over several years rather than limiting the story to a single episode.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

These features distinguish the Zanfretta affair from many single-witness UFO stories and explain why it attracted sustained attention from investigators, journalists and UFO researchers.

Why Distress and Secondary Witnesses Do Not Prove Abduction

The central dispute is not whether something unusual happened to Zanfretta. Most investigators accept that he experienced genuine fear during the first incident and that colleagues found him in an agitated state.

The disagreement concerns what caused that experience.

Several commonly cited supporting elements have important limitations.

1978 Encounters illustration 2

Emotional distress

Witnesses described Zanfretta as frightened and disoriented after the initial event. Such reactions may demonstrate sincerity but cannot identify the underlying cause. People experiencing misidentification, psychological shock, environmental stress or traumatic misunderstandings may exhibit equally intense emotional responses.

Secondary witnesses

Some colleagues confirmed hearing alarming radio messages or finding Zanfretta distressed afterwards. Others reported seeing unusual lights during separate episodes.

These observations support parts of the chronology but do not independently verify the extraordinary portions of the account, such as encounters with giant humanoids or transportation aboard an alien craft. Most witnesses observed only fragments of the overall narrative rather than the alleged abduction itself.

Physical traces

Ground marks, flattened vegetation and other environmental effects have often been presented as supporting evidence.

However, investigators have disagreed over their interpretation. None of the reported traces has been shown conclusively to require an exotic explanation, and no independently verified physical evidence directly links them to extraterrestrial technology. Similar environmental marks can arise through ordinary natural or human activity.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

Hypnotically recovered memories

One of the most controversial aspects of the case involved hypnosis sessions conducted after the initial events. These sessions produced increasingly detailed narratives about the alleged beings and their motives.

Modern psychological research treats hypnotically recovered memories with considerable caution because hypnosis can increase confidence in memories without increasing their historical accuracy. Suggestion, expectation and reconstruction may all influence what emerges during hypnotic recall. Consequently, memories recovered under hypnosis are generally regarded as weak evidence for establishing objective historical events.

This issue remains one of the principal reasons why many researchers reject the case as proof of alien abduction despite considering Zanfretta an apparently sincere witness.

Why the Case Changed Italian Ufology

Regardless of whether one accepts Zanfretta’s interpretation, the dispute transformed Italian UFO culture.

The incident coincided with the broader 1978 reporting wave, reinforcing public fascination with close encounters rather than distant lights in the sky. Investigators increasingly distinguished between simple aerial observations and complex narratives involving humanoids, missing time and alleged abductions.

Equally important was the institutional response. The exceptional volume of reports during 1978 contributed to the Italian government’s decision to assign responsibility for collecting and monitoring UFO reports to the Italian Air Force under procedures established during Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti’s administration. The resulting archive became one of Europe’s most enduring official UFO reporting systems, although its purpose has always been aviation safety and documentation rather than confirmation of extraterrestrial visitation.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

The Zanfretta affair therefore influenced both popular culture and official administration, even though neither development depended upon proving the extraordinary claims themselves.

How Researchers Assess the Case Today

Current assessments generally fall into three broad positions.

Supportive investigators argue that the combination of multiple incidents, witness testimony, radio communications, physical traces and Zanfretta’s apparent sincerity makes the case unusually difficult to dismiss.

Sceptical investigators argue that every supporting element can be explained without invoking alien abduction. They emphasise the absence of independently verifiable physical evidence, the problems associated with hypnotically recovered memories and the role of media attention during an intense national reporting wave.

Evidence-focused researchers occupy a middle position. They often conclude that Zanfretta probably experienced an authentic and highly unusual personal event but that the available evidence does not permit a reliable determination of its cause. The case therefore remains historically important while falling short of demonstrating extraterrestrial contact.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018

Lasting Significance Within Italy’s UFO History

The 1978 humanoid wave remains the defining turning point in Italian ufology because it combined unprecedented public attention, thousands of reported sightings and the country’s most influential close-encounter narrative.

Its legacy is not a confirmed alien encounter but a lasting lesson in evidence evaluation. The year demonstrates how genuine witness experiences, widespread reporting, official record-keeping and contested interpretation can coexist without resolving the central question of what was actually observed. Within the broader chronology of Italian UFO history, the Zanfretta dispute continues to serve as the benchmark against which later Italian humanoid and alleged abduction cases are compared.[CISU - Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici]cisu.orgCentro Italiano Studi Ufologici1978: la grande ondata 40 anni dopo - CISU - Centro Italiano Studi UfologiciMay 15, 2018…Published: May 15, 2018
