Introduction
Matanzas occupies a unique place in the history of Cuban UFO reports because it contains the country’s largest concentration of surviving, independently traceable cases. While Cuba has produced reports from several provinces, Matanzas stands apart through a combination of contemporary media coverage, multiple witness incidents, civilian field investigations and the unusual survival of official references in foreign archives. That does not mean the province offers proof of extraordinary phenomena. Rather, it provides the richest collection of cases that historians can still examine, even though many remain incomplete, disputed or impossible to verify.
Three episodes largely explain Matanzas’ prominence: an early Radio Progreso report preserved in a foreign intelligence archive, the widely discussed Torrientes incident of October 1995, and a later school sighting investigated by Cuban civilian researchers. Together they transformed Matanzas from one location among many into the focal point of Cuba’s modern UFO literature. The early Radio Progreso report
Long before the well-known wave of 1995, Matanzas had already entered the historical record through a report broadcast by Radio Progreso. The account survives because it was translated and preserved in a foreign intelligence archive rather than through Cuban newspaper collections.
According to the broadcast, a resident was alerted by his young daughter shortly before dusk and observed unusual lights over Matanzas. The report added that members of the Cuban Academy of Sciences observed the same phenomenon from different parts of the province. Although brief, the document is important because it establishes three features that rarely appear together in early Cuban cases:
- a contemporary broadcast rather than a retrospective recollection;
- multiple reported observers;
- reference to scientific personnel attempting observation.
The document does not establish what was seen, nor does it contain photographs, instrumental measurements or a published scientific conclusion. Why Matanzas became the centre of Cuba’s 1995 wave
The decisive turning point came during October 1995, when Cuba experienced a short-lived surge in reported sightings across several provinces. The best-known Cuban UFO case occurred near the village of Torrientes in southern Matanzas Province on 15 October 1995.
According to contemporary reporting, 74-year-old farmer Adolfo Zárate told police that he saw an object roughly comparable in size to a small car descend into nearby fields while he was working. From concealment he claimed to observe a figure leave the object, collect what appeared to be agricultural produce, return inside, and then depart after the craft emitted unusual light effects. More significant than the extraordinary elements of the story is what happened afterwards.
Police officials publicly stated that they considered the witness credible despite his age, emphasising his reputation and occupation. Reports also claimed that impressions in the vegetation and marks on the ground were documented and that material was forwarded for scientific examination. However, the limitations are equally important.
No publicly available technical report from the Cuban Academy of Sciences has emerged describing laboratory findings, environmental measurements or a formal conclusion. Likewise, photographs of the alleged landing traces have circulated primarily through secondary publications rather than authenticated archival releases. The school sighting and later investigations
Matanzas’ reputation was reinforced by another widely discussed incident involving a boarding school, where multiple pupils reported seeing an illuminated aerial object over successive evenings.
Unlike Torrientes, this case centred on numerous young witnesses rather than a single farmer. Interviews conducted afterwards described pupils independently reporting a brightly lit object accompanied by a distinctive buzzing sound and unusual air movement. The consistency of several broad features across interviews attracted attention from Cuban civilian investigators, who regarded the event as one of the country’s stronger multiple-witness cases.
Even so, caution is warranted. Most surviving documentation comes from later interviews, documentaries and UFO researchers rather than official investigative files. What local investigators contributed

Why Matanzas stands above other Cuban regions
Reports have emerged from Havana, Camagüey, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus and elsewhere, particularly during the October 1995 reporting wave. Yet none has accumulated the same combination of surviving documentation found in Matanzas.
Matanzas combines several uncommon characteristics:
- an earlier archived radio report predating the 1995 wave;
- the country’s most widely publicised alleged landing case at Torrientes;
- repeated follow-up by civilian investigators;
- later multiple-witness school reports;
- continued discussion within Cuban UFO research circles over many years.
This combination creates a genuine regional cluster in historical terms, even if it does not establish a physical hotspot for unexplained aerial phenomena. How strong is the evidence today?
From an evidential perspective, the Matanzas collection is best understood as historically significant rather than scientifically conclusive.
The strongest aspects include contemporaneous reporting, identifiable witnesses, documented official interest and repeated independent references across different source types. Those features make the cases worthy of historical study and distinguish them from stories that appeared only decades later.
The weaknesses are equally substantial. No publicly accessible archive contains complete investigative files, verified physical evidence, radar records or peer-reviewed scientific analyses capable of confirming extraordinary claims. Some later versions of the stories became progressively more elaborate, making it essential to distinguish contemporary reporting from subsequent retellings.
For that reason, Matanzas remains Cuba’s strongest UFO case cluster not because it proves an extraordinary explanation, but because it preserves the country’s richest surviving body of interconnected reports.
