The Kaikōura lights of December 1978 remain New Zealand’s most closely examined UFO incident because they combined several forms of evidence that rarely occur together: experienced aviation witnesses, air-traffic radar reports, airborne radar observations, contemporaneous radio communications and motion-picture film. Unlike many UFO reports that depend entirely on eyewitness testimony, the Kaikōura incident has generated sustained debate among aviation specialists, astronomers, sceptical investigators and UFO researchers. The disagreement is not simply over whether something unusual was seen, but over whether the various pieces of evidence describe one extraordinary event or several ordinary phenomena occurring during the same flights.
What Aircrews, Radar Controllers and Cameras Recorded
The evidence comes primarily from two related episodes. During the night of 20–21 December 1978, the crew of a Safe Air Argosy cargo aircraft reported unusual lights while flying between Blenheim and Christchurch. Wellington air-traffic controllers advised the crew that unidentified radar targets appeared near the aircraft, while the crew themselves reported bright lights that seemed to pace their flight. The better-known episode occurred on 30–31 December 1978 when an Australian television crew flew aboard another Safe Air cargo flight specifically to document any recurrence. During that journey:
- bright luminous objects were filmed on 16 mm motion-picture film;
- crew members described lights apparently moving relative to the aircraft;
- conversations between the cockpit and Wellington Air Traffic Control were recorded;

The resulting combination of film, cockpit audio and radar discussions distinguishes Kaikōura from most UFO cases. Nevertheless, none of these data sources provides a complete measurement of the objects’ true position, altitude or speed. The film lacks calibrated distance information, radar recordings were not equivalent to permanent tracking data, and witness observations inevitably depended upon human perception during a night flight.
Why the Evidence Appears Stronger Than Most UFO Cases
Supporters of the unidentified interpretation argue that the case deserves attention because multiple independent systems appeared to register unusual events simultaneously rather than relying on a single witness.
Several aspects are repeatedly emphasised.
Professional observers. The principal witnesses included commercial flight crew, experienced air-traffic controllers and television journalists rather than casual observers. Why None of the Evidence Is Decisive
The same evidence that makes the case famous also contains important limitations.
Radar reports have often been described as confirmation of solid airborne objects. In reality, radar systems can generate returns from atmospheric propagation effects, reflections from distant objects or anomalous conditions. Likewise, the television film records bright lights against a dark background but cannot independently determine range, size or altitude. A distant bright light and a nearby dim light can produce similar images when viewed through telephoto optics, especially at night.
Witness testimony also presents a challenge. Pilots are highly trained observers of aviation conditions, but estimating the distance and motion of isolated lights over dark ocean at night is inherently difficult because the normal visual cues used to judge position are largely absent.
These limitations mean that the strongest evidence is cumulative rather than individually conclusive.
Fishing Lights, Planets and Other Conventional Explanations
No single conventional explanation accounts comfortably for every reported observation. Instead, sceptical investigators generally argue that different observations probably had different causes.
Squid fishing vessels
The best-known explanation attributes many of the bright lights to powerful lamps carried by Japanese squid fishing fleets operating east of the South Island. These vessels used intense illumination to attract squid, and under favourable atmospheric conditions the lights could be visible over great distances. Supporters of this explanation argue that:
- fishing vessels were known to be operating in the relevant waters;
- exceptionally bright marine lights can appear airborne over dark horizons;
- atmospheric refraction can distort apparent position and movement.
Critics counter that some witnesses believed the lights manoeuvred with the aircraft or appeared well above the horizon, observations they argue are difficult to reconcile with stationary vessels.
Venus and astronomical objects
Astronomical explanations focus particularly on Venus, which is frequently mistaken for an unusual aerial object because of its exceptional brightness near the horizon. However, this explanation is generally considered applicable only to certain portions of the reported sightings rather than the complete sequence, especially where witnesses described multiple lights or simultaneous radar returns.
Atmospheric propagation and radar anomalies
Radar specialists have suggested that unusual atmospheric conditions could explain some reported radar contacts through anomalous propagation, in which radio waves bend differently than expected and detect distant surface objects or produce misleading target locations. This hypothesis can potentially explain some radar observations without requiring unknown airborne craft, but it does not automatically explain every visual report.
Multiple ordinary causes
Many sceptical investigators favour a combined explanation rather than a single solution. In this reconstruction:
- fishing boats explain some visual lights;
- Venus explains others;
- atmospheric conditions account for unusual radar returns;
- expectation and prolonged observation under difficult night-time conditions contributed to reports of apparent manoeuvres.
This approach does not require every observation to arise from the same source and is therefore regarded by many investigators as the most parsimonious explanation.
Why the Disagreement Persists
The Kaikōura lights continue to divide opinion because both broad interpretations leave unanswered questions.
Those favouring a genuinely unidentified event argue that it is improbable for unrelated ordinary phenomena to coincide with apparently corresponding radar reports, multiple trained witnesses and filmed lights. Sceptics respond that the evidence is frequently treated as though every observation belonged to one coherent phenomenon when the available documentation suggests several different events over multiple flights. Both positions therefore depend partly on how the evidence is grouped. If every report describes one object, conventional explanations become more difficult. What the Official Record Ultimately Shows
The New Zealand investigation produced extensive files and correspondence but did not establish the existence of an unknown aircraft or extraterrestrial technology. For that reason, the Kaikōura lights occupy a distinctive place within New Zealand’s wider UFO history. They remain the country’s richest collection of contemporaneous aviation evidence, yet they also illustrate the limits of historical reconstruction. The case is best described not as proven evidence of extraordinary craft, nor as conclusively debunked, but as a rare multi-sensor incident whose individual components remain interpretable in more than one way.
