Why later claims remain disputed

First, the military’s own contradictory public statements created an enduring credibility problem. Second, the Cold War normalised extensive government secrecy, making hidden explanations plausible to many Americans. Third, books, documentaries, television programmes and films from the late twentieth century transformed Roswell into a symbol rather than merely a historical incident. Finally, broader public distrust following events such as Watergate encouraged interpretations that governments routinely concealed important truths.
Roswell therefore evolved beyond a question of what crashed in New Mexico. It became a cultural shorthand for official secrecy itself, influencing how later American UFO cases—from military investigations to modern unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) debates—have been interpreted.
