Why witness testimony and images fall short

Witness testimony is valuable as a starting point, but by itself it rarely provides enough information for technical investigation.

Human observers naturally estimate speed, distance and altitude poorly when viewing unfamiliar lights against an otherwise featureless night sky. Without known reference points, even experienced observers can misjudge whether an object is stationary, approaching directly, or simply affected by atmospheric conditions.

Single-camera recordings

Many Omani cases rely on a single mobile-phone image or video. Without additional viewpoints, investigators cannot calculate:

  • altitude,
  • physical size,
  • true velocity,
  • flight path, or
  • distance from the observer.

An apparently dramatic movement may result from camera shake, autofocus adjustments or digital image processing rather than object motion.

Missing contextual information

Images become much more useful when accompanied by information such as:

  • precise location,
  • exact timestamp,
  • compass bearing,
  • elevation angle,
  • camera model and settings,
  • original image files rather than compressed uploads.

Most publicly available Omani material lacks several of these elements, making later reconstruction extremely difficult.

Strong UFO cases increasingly depend on multiple independent sources rather than a single dramatic account.

Investigators generally regard the following combinations as much stronger than witness testimony alone:

  • astronomical observations;

Natural and human-made explanations remain plausible

Oman’s geography offers exceptionally clear skies, which make astronomical observations easier but also increase opportunities for unusual-looking natural phenomena.

Several ordinary sources regularly produce reports of unidentified lights:

  • bright planets near the horizon;
  • meteors and fireballs;
  • satellites;
  • aircraft viewed head-on;
  • atmospheric refraction;
  • drones;
  • maritime lighting over the coast.

Recent astronomical events demonstrate how unusual sky phenomena can initially appear mysterious before scientific identification. During the intense solar storm of May 2024, observers in Oman photographed rare auroral displays that were later scientifically confirmed through collaboration with NASA. The strongest evidential package would include:

  • original, uncompressed photographs or video;
  • recordings from multiple locations allowing triangulation;
  • exact time and GPS coordinates;
  • verified weather conditions;
  • astronomical comparisons eliminating planets and satellites;
  • flight tracking information excluding known aircraft;
  • radar or other sensor confirmation where available;
  • independent witnesses documenting the same event separately.
