Among Suriname’s investigated UFO reports, the Weg naar Zee case stands out because it shows how a conventional scientific instrument can resemble the classic “flying saucer”.
According to research by Tanya Wijngaarde and the former Meldpunt UFO’s boven Surinaams Territorium (MUST), teachers and pupils at a primary school observed what they described as a metallic disc in the sky. The object reportedly matched the familiar popular image of a flying saucer: bright, circular and apparently unusual enough to generate a UFO report. However, after reviewing the available information, MUST concluded with high confidence that the object had been a weather balloon rather than an unidentified craft. The investigation is important because nothing suggests the witnesses fabricated their experience. Instead, several well-known perceptual factors combined:
- a reflective balloon viewed from a considerable distance;

- the expectation that a disc-shaped object resembles the familiar image of a UFO.
The result was a genuine observation of a real object that acquired an extraordinary interpretation through appearance rather than through unusual behaviour.
One unresolved detail concerns chronology. Wijngaarde’s published dissertation contains an inconsistency between the narrative description and the cited case reference, with one place suggesting an observation in 2001 while the bibliography identifies the associated MUST report with a 2011 date. Because the original case file has not been publicly released, researchers generally acknowledge this discrepancy instead of attempting to resolve it by speculation.
The Elisabethshof wish lantern explanation
The Elisabethshof incident provides an equally instructive example, but under night-time conditions.
Investigators concluded that the reported UFO was most consistent with a wish lantern (also called a sky lantern): a lightweight paper lantern lifted by the heat from a small flame. Unlike weather balloons, lanterns produce their own warm light, making them particularly effective at creating unusual appearances after dark. Wish lanterns possess several characteristics that frequently generate UFO reports:
- they appear almost silent;
- they drift slowly with upper-level winds rather than ground-level winds noticed by observers;
- they can seem to hover when moving towards or away from the viewer;
- their brightness changes as the flame flickers or becomes partially obscured;
- they eventually fade or disappear as the fuel burns out, creating the impression of a mysterious vanishing.
These features closely match many descriptions traditionally associated with unidentified lights in the sky, despite requiring no unusual technology.
In the Elisabethshof case, the lantern explanation accounted for the observed behaviour more effectively than hypotheses involving unknown aircraft or extraordinary craft. Rather than leaving the report permanently “unidentified”, investigators found that the ordinary explanation better matched both the object’s appearance and its movement.
Why many witnesses can share the same mistake
One common misunderstanding in UFO discussions is the belief that numerous independent witnesses automatically rule out misidentification. The Surinamese examples show why this assumption is unreliable.
People watching the same distant object are not making independent observations of different objects. They are observing a single stimulus under nearly identical viewing conditions. If the stimulus itself is visually ambiguous, witnesses may naturally converge on similar descriptions.
Several mechanisms encourage this convergence:
- Shared viewing angle. Everyone sees essentially the same silhouette and lighting.
- Common expectations. Popular culture has long associated circular metallic shapes with flying saucers, making that interpretation readily available.
- Lack of scale. Without nearby reference points, observers cannot accurately judge an object’s size or distance.
- Atmospheric effects. Heat haze, glare, haze and changing illumination alter an object’s apparent shape and motion.
- Social reinforcement. Once one observer describes an object as unusual, later witnesses may unconsciously adopt similar language while remaining completely sincere.
Psychological research has consistently shown that perception is an active process rather than a passive recording of reality. Memory and expectation influence how ambiguous scenes are interpreted, particularly when observers have only a brief or distant view. What these cases mean for Suriname’s UFO record
These investigations demonstrate that careful follow-up can substantially improve the quality of a national UFO catalogue.
MUST’s stated approach was to begin with conventional explanations before considering an object genuinely unidentified.
