Was the 1952 Dakar UFO a Meteor?

Introduction
The 3 July 1952 Dakar sighting is the earliest Senegalese UFO case with a surviving documentary record, but it is also an example of how a report can become famous while the underlying evidence almost entirely disappears. A single eyewitness reportedly observed a fast-moving, flame-trailing object over Dakar shortly after dawn. What makes the case historically significant is not that it proves an extraordinary event, but that almost every piece of evidence needed to identify the object was never preserved. There are no known photographs, no surviving witness interview, no official Senegalese investigation, no weather analysis from the time, and no independent technical data. As a result, modern researchers are left assessing a brief secondary report rather than the original incident itself.
What the witness reportedly saw
According to the surviving report, the observation occurred at 06:08 on 3 July 1952 over Dakar, then part of French West Africa. The witness described an object travelling south at very high speed at an estimated altitude of roughly 1,500 metres. It was reportedly:
- flat and tapered in shape;
- trailing long bluish and reddish flames;
- moving rapidly across the sky;
- seen when no aircraft were believed to be operating over Dakar.
Some later reproductions also state that the stars were no longer visible at the time of the observation, although it is unclear whether this referred to normal daylight conditions around sunrise or was intended as part of the witness description. Even this basic description contains uncertainties. The estimated altitude, speed and shape appear to be witness impressions rather than measured values. Without knowing the object’s true distance, none of those estimates can be independently verified.
How the report reached a CIA archive
One reason the Dakar sighting is still discussed is that it appears in a declassified CIA document. This often creates the mistaken impression that the CIA investigated or endorsed the report.
The documentary chain is much more limited.
The known sequence appears to be:
- an unidentified eyewitness reported the event;
- the French-language weekly France-Afrique in Dakar published the account on 12 July 1952;
- the report was included in a foreign intelligence summary covering UFO reports in Morocco and French West Africa;
- that intelligence summary was retained in CIA archives and later released through the CIA Reading Room. cufon.org
