Introduction
The most useful conclusion is therefore not that nothing unusual has been seen, but that North Macedonia’s UFO record is fragmented and difficult to verify. Some reports remain unresolved because the evidence is too poor; others have plausible explanations involving drones, aircraft, satellites, astronomical objects or camera artefacts. The clearest documented debunking occurred in April 2020, when lines of unfamiliar lights over the country were identified by the Skopje Astronomical Society as SpaceX Starlink satellites.[Слободен печат]slobodenpecat.mkspektakularna snimka od satelitskoto sozvezdie vchera nad makedonija videoСлободен печатSpectacular footage from the satellite constellation over…19 Apr 2020 — Skopje Astronomical Society share a spectacular…

What has actually been reported?
The 2006 triangular-light account
One of the earliest readily searchable entries attributed to Macedonia was submitted to the US-based National UFO Reporting Center in October 2006. The witness described a single orange-red triangular object, reportedly visible from two places about 18 kilometres apart. The submission claimed that television stations possessed photographs and video, but the surviving database entry provides no accessible supporting material, named witnesses, exact observation sites, radar record or later investigation.[nuforc.org]nuforc.orgNUFORC UFO Sighting 5200630 Oct 2006 — It was seen in two places, 18km appart. All Tv stations reported this UFO so if you need more info…
This makes the report interesting as a possible multi-location sighting but weak as evidence. Statements such as “larger than an aircraft” or “seen from two places” cannot be tested without angular measurements, precise bearings and independently preserved accounts. It is also unclear whether the triangular appearance referred to a solid body, three lights interpreted as one object, or the shape of a low-resolution image.
Five lights over Skopje in 2016
On 6–7 September 2016, several Macedonian outlets repeated a report of five bright objects moving over Skopje. Accounts described them as travelling rapidly in a straight line, one behind another, with strong reddish light. Some reports also asserted that they appeared larger than passenger aircraft.[time.mk]time.mkOpen source on time.mk.
The reporting pattern matters. TIME.mk preserved multiple headlines, but the stories largely repeated information originating with the same source rather than documenting five independent investigations. The aggregator itself warns that it does not guarantee the reliability of indexed material. Consequently, the number of articles should not be mistaken for the number of independent witnesses or evidence streams.[time.mk]time.mkOpen source on time.mk.
No publicly accessible air-traffic record, astronomical reconstruction or authenticated original video appears to have resolved the case. A line of separated lights could have several ordinary causes, including aircraft following a route, illuminated balloons, lanterns or—after 2019—satellite trains. The 2016 report predates operational Starlink launches, so that particular explanation does not apply, but the surviving description is insufficient to discriminate between the alternatives.
The Bardovci red light in 2018
A better-described but still inconclusive event was reported over the Skopje suburb of Bardovci in December 2018. A mobile-phone recording made from Trno Dol showed a bright point said to have appeared red to the eye. The object reportedly rose, paused briefly and disappeared during snowy weather. The source also mentioned a similar light in the area roughly two months earlier.[Telegraf.rs]telegraf.rsUFO spotted on the sky above Skopje: Macedonians took a photo of the mysterious red ball - Telegraf.rs…
Significantly, the original portal’s editors favoured a terrestrial explanation: they believed the object was probably a drone, possibly operating from the direction of Kosovo. That suggestion was not supported by a recovered drone, operator identification or official flight data, so it remains a hypothesis rather than a confirmed solution. Nevertheless, it is more proportionate than claims of an exotic craft because the video apparently showed only a luminous point without visible structure, measured speed or reliable distance.[Telegraf.rs]telegraf.rsUFO spotted on the sky above Skopje: Macedonians took a photo of the mysterious red ball - Telegraf.rs…
Snow, haze and digital zoom further weaken attempts to estimate an object’s movement from such footage. A distant aircraft or drone can appear to stop when travelling towards the observer, while autofocus, hand movement and atmospheric scattering can alter a point light’s apparent size and colour.
The Starlink wave of 2020–21
North Macedonia’s strongest documented example of a UFO misidentification occurred in April 2020. Residents saw numerous bright objects crossing the sky in sequence, prompting speculation about UFOs and conspiracies. Local reporting subsequently identified them as a train of SpaceX Starlink communications satellites, and the Skopje Astronomical Society published its own recording and explanation.[time.mk]time.mkна небото за кои се пишуваа разни приказни како НЛО, заговор против…Read more…
Similar observations recurred in April 2020 and May 2021. Reports described strings of lights moving in an orderly direction across the Macedonian sky; contemporary coverage again explained them as Starlink satellites visible to the naked eye.[time.mk]time.mkСтанува збор за малите сателити што периодично ги лансира…Read more…
This explanation is technically credible. Recently launched satellites remain close together before dispersing into operational orbits, creating a striking “train” shortly after sunset or before dawn. Research has shown that Starlink configurations and changing reflection angles can produce unfamiliar appearances even for pilots, and that orbital data can be used retrospectively to reconstruct and identify such sightings.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
Recent online reports
Online posts have continued from places including Ohrid, Strumica, Prilep and Kumanovo. A 2022 Ohrid video showed a distant moving object that commenters variously interpreted as a drone, bird or aircraft, but no verifiable investigation followed. A 2024 database entry from Kumanovo described a black, U-shaped object reportedly watched by 12 people for an hour or more. The entry supplied witness estimates of size and distance but no publicly available corroborating sensor data or independent documentation.[Reddit]reddit.comr/Ask Balkansr/Ask Balkans
Such reports should be treated as leads, not established incidents. Public UFO databases generally record what submitters say they observed; inclusion does not certify the object’s physical characteristics or exclude conventional explanations. Estimates of an unknown object’s size, altitude and distance are especially unreliable when there is no known reference point.
Why the record is centred on Skopje
The apparent concentration around Skopje probably reflects reporting conditions more than a genuine geographical hotspot. The capital has the country’s largest population, greater media density, more cameras, substantial air traffic and an active astronomical community. Reports made there are therefore more likely to be recorded, reposted and preserved.
Skopje also lies in visually complex airspace. Aircraft approaching or departing Skopje International Airport can appear stationary, change brightness as they turn, or display red, green and white navigation lights in unfamiliar combinations. Drones are more common around densely populated districts, while mountains surrounding the basin can obscure normal reference points and make altitude difficult to judge.
Claims from Ohrid, Prilep, Strumica and Kumanovo show that reports are not exclusive to the capital. However, the regional sample is too small and inconsistent to support meaningful claims about clusters. A real geographical comparison would require a standardised national reporting system that recorded observation time, coordinates, direction, elevation, weather, photographs and possible aircraft or satellite matches.
What official records do—and do not—show
No publicly identified North Macedonian institution appears to maintain a dedicated, searchable UFO or unidentified anomalous phenomena archive comparable with the historical files released by some larger countries. Searches of publicly available defence, civil-aviation and investigation material instead reveal conventional systems for aviation safety, airspace protection and accident or incident reporting.
The Civil Aviation Agency regulates flight operations, airworthiness, airports and air-navigation safety. Its reporting framework records operational details such as altitude, airspace class, weather, traffic services and risk assessment. North Macedonia’s 2024 National Aviation Safety Plan states that the country receives approximately 100 aviation-safety occurrence reports annually, but the published material does not identify a separate category or public register for unexplained aerial sightings.[www.caa.gov.mk]caa.gov.mkOpen source on caa.gov.mk.
North Macedonia’s airspace has also been incorporated into NATO’s air-policing system, with Greek aircraft assigned to help safeguard it and arrangements later developed for Italian participation. This provides a framework for responding to genuine airspace threats, but it should not be confused with a public UFO-investigation programme.[Ministry of Defence Archive]arhiva.mod.gov.mkOpen source on mod.gov.mk.
The absence of published UFO files does not prove that radar operators, pilots or military personnel have never encountered unidentified traffic. It means only that no coherent declassified national collection has been made publicly discoverable. Some relevant observations may be embedded in ordinary safety, security or air-traffic records and may never have been labelled “UFO”.
The evidence ledger for North Macedonia’s UFO record
The North Macedonian material is easiest to understand by separating three different meanings of “unidentified”.
Confirmed observations of something in the sky: Several reports clearly document that witnesses recorded or described lights or distant objects. The 2016 Skopje lights, 2018 Bardovci recording and repeated Starlink observations belong in this category. Confirmation that an observation occurred does not confirm the witness’s interpretation.
Contested or unresolved reports: The 2006 triangular-light account, the 2016 group of reddish lights and some later online submissions cannot presently be identified from the surviving public evidence. “Unresolved” here means that necessary data are missing, not that investigators eliminated conventional causes.
Explained or substantially debunked cases: The bright processions seen across North Macedonia in 2020 and 2021 were credibly identified as Starlink satellite trains. The 2018 Bardovci light was suspected locally to be a drone, although the identification was never independently demonstrated.[time.mk]time.mkна небото за кои се пишуваа разни приказни како НЛО, заговор против…Read more…
No well-documented North Macedonian case in the accessible record combines the features needed for a strong extraordinary claim: multiple calibrated sensor systems, independent witnesses at known positions, retained original files, radar or air-traffic data, and evidence excluding aircraft, satellites, balloons, drones, astronomical bodies and image artefacts.
How strong evidence would look
A useful investigation would begin with the exact time and observation point. Those details allow researchers to compare the sighting with aircraft transponder records, satellite orbits, astronomical objects, weather balloons, meteor activity and local weather. Original photographs or video files are more valuable than social-media copies because they may retain timestamps, exposure information and full resolution.
Multiple witnesses improve a case only when their accounts are genuinely independent. If two observers record the same object from known locations, triangulation can estimate its altitude, distance and speed. By contrast, ten websites repeating one witness’s description still amount to one evidence source.
Modern scientific proposals for studying unidentified aerial phenomena therefore emphasise simultaneous wide- and narrow-field cameras, radar, radio receivers, acoustic equipment and environmental sensors. The aim is not merely to collect more videos, but to determine whether an apparent anomaly survives measurement across several independent systems.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
Applied to North Macedonia, this approach would probably resolve many reports quickly. Aircraft, drones and satellites would leave recognisable observational signatures; planets and bright stars could be matched to the sky at the stated time; and camera artefacts would often fail to appear on a second instrument. Any event remaining genuinely anomalous after those checks would be far more significant than the current collection of compressed clips and retrospective testimony.
Reading the evidence around North Macedonia’s UFO record conservatively
North Macedonia has a real folklore and reporting history of unusual aerial observations, but not a robust national catalogue of unexplained craft. The public record is dominated by brief media items, copied stories, witness-submitted databases and low-information videos. Skopje appears most often because it offers the largest pool of observers and the greatest amount of aerial activity, not because the evidence establishes it as an anomalous hotspot.
The record also demonstrates how the category changes with technology. Lights that might once have remained unexplained can now be checked against satellite passes, aircraft tracking and astronomical software. The Starlink episodes show both sides of the issue: unfamiliar objects can genuinely surprise large numbers of observers, yet still have a precise and ordinary explanation.
For now, North Macedonia’s most notable UFO finding is therefore an evidential one. There are sightings worth documenting, but no publicly substantiated case that requires an extraterrestrial or otherwise extraordinary explanation. The unresolved residue reflects missing information far more clearly than it reflects unknown technology.
