Why investigators judged the documents unreliable

The link to the earlier Kalahari hoax
Hind’s strongest suspicion was that the Lesotho papers were connected to James van Greunen, a figure associated with an earlier alleged UFO crash on the South Africa–Botswana border in 1989. No distinct regional pattern can be extracted from this material. Why the story endured
The Lesotho story has survived because it is unusually well constructed as a piece of UFO folklore. It combines an isolated rural setting, frightened livestock, a burning object, ordinary police witnesses, rapid military intervention, living occupants and a government cover-up. It also uses a small country surrounded by a much larger military power, making South African involvement sound superficially plausible.
Its paperwork creates an additional impression of solidity. The genuine existence of some places and formations further distracts from invented personnel and implausible command relationships.
Later retellings often preserve the exciting details while dropping the investigative history.
